Quibble about Gresham & Walsingham Dates
I am informed that this is the place to post this quibble.
Playing a GC as England the other day I had the Gresham and Walsingham events fire in 1555 in the middle of Bloody Mary's reign. This did not seem right as I knew Walsingham was a champion of Protestantism. So I searched the internet and found that Gresham (1519-1579) was called on to fix England's financial mess in 1551, during Edward VI's reign and was rewarded by Edward for his success. He was dismissed upon the ascension of Mary I in 1553, but recalled when his successor messed up. Walsingham (1530-1590), a zealous Protestant, took refuge abroad during Mary's reign, returning to England to become a Member of Parliment after Elizabeth came to the throne. He later served as Ambassador to France, where he observed the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572. He succeeded W. Cecil as Secretary of State in 1573, and uncovered the Babington plot to assssinate Elizabeth in 1585. In the interest of historical accuracy I would therefore like to suggest a change in the dates for these events; Gresham back to 1552 during Edward VI, and Walsingham forward into Elizabeth's reign, perhaps 1573.
