[Bug?] Unable to get far past game launch [Mac]

Was able to play prison architect on MAC through steam within the last two weeks or so. Suddenly game screen loads black after the launcher and immediately crashes.

I have attempted to delete/reinstall steam, all paradox and prison architect folders in ~/library/Application Support/. I have verified game integrity and clear download cache and reinstalled the game multiple times. I have done a full reset by uninstalling all steam, paradox interactive, and prison architect-related files. The game still crashes.

I have tried every fix I can find online. I have tried launching in different resolutions, full screen, borderless window, etc..

One thing I found interesting is that when I attempted to launch in SAFE MODE through steam, I was given the following error code:

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! I love this game and it is a shame it stopped working. It has never given me issues before.

This is a known bug in the Mac version, and is nothing to do with your original problem. You need to copy or rename PrisonArchitect.app to Prison Architect.app (with a space).


I don't know what is causing your crash problem though. Your MacOS is way out of date but as this is an old game I wouldn't have thought that would matter much. Just in case though, is there something stopping you from updating to 12.4 ? As the crash is in dylib that may be it; it is possible recent game patches are not tested on old MacOS versions before release.

Hey, I actually fixed the Prison Architect.app error after posting that as I saw you post it on another discussion. But every time I hit play it updates the game for .01 seconds and then says ready to play. I am unsure if something is preventing it from updating correctly or what? I will also update my Mac in the meantime and see if that's the problem. Thanks for your help!

I have noticed that the launcher attempts to update every time I use it, and then I receive this message when restarting the post update.

"Could not locate any valid installation of the Paradox Launcher. Please Try Again.

Detailed Logs can be found at /Users/[user]/library/application support/paradox interactive/launcher-v2/logs/launcher-bootstrapper.log

What happens if you run Prison Architect.app directly, which bypasses the launcher?

I am in macOS Monterey 12.5. I have attached a screen showing my macOS.

But that Apple crash report clearly says OS Version: Mac OS X 10.14.6 ... ?!? Or is it that you've updated it since we started this thread? If so I seem to have missed that.

Either way Please try this:
- uninstall PA from Steam
- unsubscribe from all mods in this game's Steam Workshop

Delete the following folders if still present:
- ~/Library/⁨Application Support⁩/Steam/SteamApps/common/Prison Architect/
To find that folder, in Finder do cmd-shift-G to bring up the GOTO box. In there paste ~/Library/Application Support⁩/ .

- ⁨~/Library/⁨Application Support⁩/Prison Architect/
(except any valued save games in the /saves/ folder of course/

Now install PA again and see how that goes please!

I first get this error, this error pops up everytime I do what you said to do. If i try to launch it straight away I get a crash report. If I remove the file it still gives me the same crash report. Also I have no clue why it reports version 12.5, it is still doing it as well. I attached the lastest crash report as well.

You've got an old launcher version there, current is 2022.9 . The orange dot means an update has come down, if you exit and restart the launcher does it go to 2022.9 ? Do you still get that error?

My game always tries to update when i launch and it always says complete.
