  • Crusader Kings III
My king died and his heir inherited the throne. As a new queen, I couldn't appoint a steward. It doesn't even show a word "steward" in the council screen or in the appoinment screen. Also, for some reason it doesn't show my spouse, even when he should be in court and doesn't have his own realm.
I tried saving and then loading a save, it didn't work. I then loaded an earlier save where my king was alive. He lived a little longer this time, but when he died the same bug happened again.

Edit: when checking this the game also crashed twice, when I clicked text "Click to appoint a". Not sure if it is about this, though, my game crashes sometimes after the last update (which seems to be common).

Here's the picture. I could appoint a chancellor and a spymaster. I just left them blank to show that there are no text "steward".

Continuing a game between game updates can do that sometimes. To avoid this, paradox usually puts the last version online in the betas tab on steam, so you can roll the game version back and finish a game without these glitches. There’s quite a large number of old versions available if you want to switch game version and play really old game files too.

I also had this happen yesterday, just keep playing and eventually the option came back

But there have been no updates in the last week

True. But unless I misread the original post, he specifically said his game started crashing after the last update.

Edit - I always play the same game file infrequently over the long course of many months, simply due to life being busy and I can’t play a game. It frequently warns me the game could be unstable because the version changed.

This is an old bug. Happens quite often with stewards or spy masters. Most often the steward was the wife of the heir who is ruling now (or if your heir was the steward). The games not only removes your wife from spouse and steward position (or your heir), but also destroyes spouse and steward position that you cannot put another person into this position. At some point in the past this bug was marked as confirmed and put into bug archive, but the bug is still in the game.

Thank you, that was it! My spouse was a steward of the king. I switched him before the king died, and now the heir queen has both steward and spouse. Hopefully they fix it in some update.

For others, I updated the game when the update came. I started this file after that. But looks like the bug itself is old, but the crashes started after the update. I'm still trying to play it, the crashes are not that common, although annoying.
