Hi, I bought EU like two weeks ago and have been enjoying it immensely. However, a couple of things came to mind that I didn't see answered/brought up earlier on the board.
I get this very weird bug where the game boots me to Windows out of the blue. It's a clean boot, I have no problems re-starting EU or any program except Windows Media and other MPEG players. Also, the music keeps playing from the CD... There are no warnings, it appears to occur at random intervals (sometimes it's 5 minutes into a game, other times I've been playing for as long as an hour.) I wish I could show any error messages I get, but alas, there are none.
As for my comments... I started out playing as Poland and found it odd that it is already united in 1492. I later found out that rebellions tear the country apart in any prolonged war. Not that I disagree with the fact that Poland wasn't a very strong, centralized country... but neither was France, nor England. Yet those don't get nearly as many rebellions during wars (yes, I've played and tried it out.) However, that's not even my main point.
EU seems to be trying hard to recreate history at times. Like giving certain advantages and disadvantages to countries, with no clear rhyme or reason for doing so, except it seems to reflect history. Yet if all I wanted was a historical account, why not read a history book? Who says that the Treaty of Lublin was the same in the game I play as it was in history? Who says that Posen and Danzig (I wish you'd re-name it Gdansk in a patch
) are going to turn out to be Protestant? They didn't seem to be historically - yes, they had Protestant communities but they never embraced the new faith. In fact, most of the time religious changes came from up top, not down below. Saxony had no problem switching to Protestantism and leading the Protestant camp until the 18th century, whereupon it switched back to Catholicism to take the Polish throne. There were no rebellions, neither in Poland or Saxony. Many of the people converted. Brandenburg, Prussia, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands - they all embraced Protestantism as a way to fight off the internal meddling of the Church and more powerful Catholic states. The people didn't spontaneously rise up and pronounce "Oh, by the way my liege lord who can order my execution upon whim, I've decided to go against your will and become Protestant."
Anyway... other than that, it seems that Poland is pretty much screwed when it comes to winning the GC (except if you vassalize and annex Scotland... which happened to me and I didn't even really intend to do so until I saw that I could vassalize Scotland!). In fact, most primarily land-oriented nations are. Too much emphasis seems placed on the amount of territory controlled. After all, would anyone argue that in 1792, Austria was a power? What about France? (remember, Napoleon was just coming into his own.) Austria dominated the European political scene from 1815 until 1848, despite being a virtually land-locked nation with no colonies.
So, onto the questions. How long does it take the Nationalism ratings to go down a point? I understand nationalism, but revolts every 3 years in provinces stacked with armies and huge forts? As early as the 1550s, long before feelings of nationalism were wide-spread (especially among the German states)? Doesn't seem plausible =/ Also, nationalism makes it suck to get the random event where you inherit a nation. Especially Hungary, which seems pretty much worthless (why are the Balkans so run-down? Shouldn't they be run-down long after all the Turkish wars, not before?) Why do people constantly rebel when their ruler bequeathes them on you? At the very least the chance and severity of Nationalism should be much lower.
I've also read of people playing Sweden, Brandenburg and other small nations - er... how? A mod?
