Two questions sort of linked

1) What factors determine how many troops a province can support before you start to loose troops through attrition? I have noticed that population size seems to matter although i have seen smaller provinces that can support more troops than bigger ones.

2) What determines the amount of troops that a province can build in one hit. Your capital always seems to be able to churn out a big army in one build but other than that is it size again that matters?

Of particular importance to me is the new world. Like many people I like to get a protecting army up and running in my new colonies. I however am just working on hit and miss as to which ones might be good as the 1st city. Example i am playing England and i have both Table and Quebec, Quebec is a province (which got natives) of about 1900 and Table is only about 850. Yet Table can support 55 troops and Quebec only 35. Both can only produce 1000 inf/cav or 10 art at a time. Obviously being England i want more ships but building those ships at 1 warship every 6 or 7 months is too slow. I could of course send stuff from England but then i loose due to attrition. Again i could 'escort' fleets over with an explorer but thats such a waste using an explorer as a bus service.

Any help on this greatly received, plus if all you experts out there know the nice big provinces that are good places for that 1st city please tell me a few.

Check out Huszics FAQ. Basically, Base Tax is used to determine attrition.

You should be able to send ships from England to Quebec without an explorer even early on without losing any - send them in small groups of 3 or so. England to Table is a little riskier until you have medium naval tach. You might want another colony (level 1) in between the two - send about 4K infantry as a garrison - make sure it can have a port.

Size and province manpowervalues (check my province page for the MP value).
I can't give the exact formula though (since i don't know =)

What, are you crazy? :) The trip down to Table is something like 6+ months, probably more. A small fleet without an explorer will be trashed. Kebec is possible. In either case, the fleet will be trashed, or severly reduced, without a port at the end (unless you have an explorer), though you will be able to deliver your army. No offense, Robo, it's really late. ;)

Since I seem to play England, all the time, useful tricks include, put a colony in Isle Royal, and someplace along the African coast or St. Helena to provide a waypoint for such ventures. Starting in about 1550, England gets a lot of explorers, so it becomes very easy to make those journeys (assuming your not at war and using the explorers as fleet commanders, since they are mostly very good).

In regards to what I can build in a provence. I don't worry about the factors. Whatever it allows me to build, it allows me to build - it is a mystery to me what factors might be involved.
