I've noticed recently that as a building levels up it changes type. It still stays within the footprint size and from the same zone type but seemingly it randomly changes the building. I'm running a fair few mods so I'm unsure whether this is caused by mods but has anyone noticed this in the base game? As you can see in the image blow I plopped a row of all the same level 1 uk terrace building but now some have all levelled up into different building models while some have stayed the same. It seems that somewhere the building level tree is broken. Does anyone know if this is fixable or if it's a specific mod that does this? Thanks.

Building level ups is a base game mechanic. You’ve got find it in that list, when you refine the search to different building levels you’ll see the models change usually at level 3 and 5. The changes are more or less dramatic depending on the pack.

Add plop the growables to your mod list and you’ll be able to set it to lock level for all plopped assets. That’ll retain their appearance and you’ll have finer control of how your city looks

So yer, I am placing pretty much everything in my city with plop the growables, I must have accidentally deleted it when I formatted that list. But I thought as most buildings levelled up at 3 and 5 they changed to a building with similar appearance but with things added or an extra storey or two but building shape would retain a similar look to the level 1 building. Hence why I plop level 1 buildings so I can still get the levelling up mechanic but retain the overall look.

I have only noticed this recently so could it be something to do with the most recent patch or has this always been the case?

Always been the case, I’m afraid. As they level up they have a pool of that zone size to choose from and will do so randomly. Some packs are more homogenous than others though. The UK one is pretty good for making only minor adjustments, the German and French usually add a storey and / or a backhouse but the vanilla, Japanese and east Europe packs have drastic model changes in there. Basically the asset creators used a different tactic to add either variety or homogeneity.

Personally I like to keep levels locked so I can use the taller assets for the centre and similar but shorter assets for towns / villages / older buildings. Though I unlock industry so the sim controls desired worker education levels.

Levelling up makes the buildings more water and power efficient but with higher rent (I think. Not 100% sure on the rent part tbh) Whether that is important to you is your choice
