I read on the Victoria II Wikipedia page that Paradox considered a sequel a low priority because Vic2 was their "worst performing grand strategy game of their portfolio." As of right now, I haven't played Vic2, but I saw the sale and it seems like an opportune time to play it. I think a lot of people discovered Paradox with CK2 or EU4 but didn't buy the older game; but they would buy a sequel, especially if it had an official EU4 converter. I actually bought EU4 and its expansions after playing CK2 because of the converter (and discovered another great game).

[Edit: Thanks to Aardvark Bellay for the misquote correction (below).]

Vicky 2 is the most depthful of the relevant Paradox games, but the age is showing. I feel like Paradox is making Vicky 3 as we speak as the demand is actually pretty high nowadays, especially with big Paradoxtubers such as iSorrowProductions promoting it.
For now, enjoy Vicky 2. Feel free to ask questions in the Vicky 2 forum, we will be glad to show you the ropes :D

Thanks, I'm already impressed with the depth of the population mechanics. If only I could finish the tutorial (I guess it wasn't updated for the expansions).

I don’t know about it being the worst performing...I think March of the Eagles and several others did much worse. We do know Vicky 2 turned a profit.

Buy it

This correct, unfortunately. I encountered the same problem when I played the game for the first time. If I recall correctly the tutorial wants you to make things which are not possible with the DLC (and least not in the way the tutorial wants you to).

My first real playthrough after that was Japan and I thought I'd figure out the most relevant aspects by myself (and the wiki). It worked and was a rather satisfactory experience, I must say. despite losing two Great Wars for some backwater province in Europe :)

Let’s be honest. Paradox tutorials are...not that good...at least they weren’t. In EU3 and contemporary games. I advise you to watch a Let’s play.

It's an edit from August 2018 and is not what Wester said in that podcast.
That wikipedia entry is bull.
Not to mention that the author didn't get some levels of irony.
Shams said the quoted part about the "worst performing of the grand strategy,.. while making a profit" and Wester said "I'm not a firm believer that VicIII is the most prioritised game to make a sequel out of", which is not the same as "a low priority".

He also said that he won't be the one making the decision either and that it would come "before 2025".

Another point is, that nothing said in these podcasts regarding game releases should be taken too seriously.

Edited it, as close to nothing riles me up as much as misquoting.

Thanks for the correction. That's a little bit more promising.

Starting on a Bavaria campaign; I like how the wargame is a much bigger deal in Vic2, it's not something to take lightly or just crush a neighbour for kicks, and building up industry and prestige actually contributes significantly to the power ranking. It definitely captures a sense for the social sweep of the Victorian era, from what I know of history.

I have had great games of Vicky 2 where I never went to war.

This is true it's a great game for immersion in peace and empire building through colonisation. The only other game you can play without war is CK2.
