I've begun work on a series of events relevent to Italy/The Western Empire. I'm familiar enough with modding that I can do most of this myself, but there are a few things that I can't do:

I'm terrible with graphics, so I couldn't get a flag and shield together myself (not to mention that i actually don't know what the flag should be).

Basically, what I have in mind so far is that, should a war between Italy and the Eastern Empire start over the Albanian region, it's possible for the Eastern Empire to win (as I have in my game). However, I don't really think it's plausible for direct annexation and occupation to lead to cores or anything, so I came up with the following;

An event where Sophocles (or whoever is Eastern Emperor at the time) approaches Vittorio with one of three options (depending upon what the Byzantine player/AI choses):

Vittorio is recognized by Constantinople as the patriarch of a new Western Dynasty and Italy is transformed into the Western Empire (with claims on Northwest Africa, the southern three provinces of Switzerland, Vichy France, and the East Coast of Iberia), with this option being the one Italy is most likely to accept as a surrender event, and the Western Empire is made a puppet of the Eastern.

Vittorio is again recognized as the patriarch of a new Western dynasty, but the Western Empire is incorporated into the Eastern with Vittorio as head of government and Sophocles as head of state. The claims from the previous remain and there is a minor dissent hit (to represent the Italians not being entirely comfortable with the new government situation). Byzantine gets cores on all of Italy's former territory. This one is the second most likely to be accepted by Italy (but much less than the first one). Byzantine gets claims on all of North Africa.

A direct annexation of of Italy by the Eastern Empire. Byzantine gets cores on Italy's territory, but takes a massive dissent hit for the fact that the Italians really do not like the new situation. This is the least likely to be accepted by Italy.

Through all these Mussolini is removed as a possible minister (because part of the flavor text will mention his execution as a prequisite for the surrender). Also, each one gives Italy the option of not surrendering at the expense of a large dissent hit.

Anyone who can help me with the flag situation can either send me a PM or post here. Hope you don't mind me doing some additional work on your mod, hammerfalls. It's a great mod and I enjoy playing it.

EDIT: Oh, and to clarify, the triggers for the situation involve Byzantine controlling Rome, Constantinople, and not being at war with the Soviet Union or Germany.

Presenting version 2.1a
Seems like forever since I posted. But I woke up this morning and was inspired (I couldnt possible tell you what by) and so I went over the entrie thread and updated the mod about its complaints and problems.
Specifically:
Upped leader skills
Added forts to key cities
Made the changes/corrections to the following events
The Albanian series
The Return of Imperialism
Communist Civil War

In essence this is just the compilation of everyones suggestions and without any real original work by me. However, I dont remember if I posted my AI modifications so that may be new.
-Hammerfalls

Finally to answer a question, The Roman and Byzantine political systems were extremely unstable even in times of stability, so I figured lets add political/economic/social upheaval and change and its probably even worse.

One catch though, I have never really looked at the changes in doomsday, so the mod works with it but it does not include spies or any other changes that may have been made. I also didnt add 7 more years of events. Although I am open to suggestions.

Now then the download link can be found here

I downloaded it but in the loading sequence of the game all it said beneath the bar was "Unknown String Wanted" and when I minimized it said Excel file not found. What should I do?

The mod doesn't show up on the scenario list after i down loaded it...
What should i do to get it to work?

Should i run the download or save it? and if save, where?

You shouldn't need to. You could have a folder called Byzantine Empire(Or whatever) in the MODS folder, with the files inside the Byzantine Empire folder. The MODS folder should be on the directory that the .exe file is in, and there should be a JSGME thingy in the same directory. You should click on the JSGME icon and you should then click on the > after clicking on the name of the foldder where you have the modded files. Wait a while, and you should have a new scenario in the scenarios that are playable.

hopefully hammerfalls come's back with a newer version to work with Armageddon but one can only hope on that :p and have the Byzantine Empire last till the '60s wow Byzantine hippies :p

whoa, what? There is a MODS folder, but i did not understand anything after that. You're using dd right? Anyway, i have some stuff to do before i play the mod anyway, so if someone can solve it, no rush.
ANd i'm bad with computer jargon, so you'll need simpler terms.

So am I. I have learned from the time I've been around.

Okay... The MODS folder should be in the same place that the file named HoI2 with the HoI icon on it. In the same place, there should be an icon named JSGME. You should have both the JSGME, the MODS folder, and the HoI2 file in the same folder.

When everything is where it's supposed to be, click on the JSGME. When you do, a window will pop up. There will be the Available Mods and the Activated Mods areas in the window.

If the Byzantine Mod folder that you have is called Byzantine Mod, there will be a little 'Byzantine Mod' under the Available Mods section. Click on "Byzantine Mod', and click on the big > that's right in the middle of the window.

I hope that's simple enough.

Shouldn't Byzantium have streamlined/stabilized at least somewhat by modern times? I mean it couldn't have survived on its old hectic system.

Ok lots of replies,

First off SeanB, what do you mean?
If you have played the Victoria mod, it does stabilize and change, however you may remember that most nations were unstable in this era (Germany, Italy, France, America etc.) and the Byzantines are no different.

Second, Plushie
How far have you come in your changes, I would like to incorporate them into a future release. Also I just releseased a mod based on the Roman Empire surviving into the 15th century and I came across the same flag/shield problem. I would recommend asking for either a Roman Eagle flag or an SPQR flag on the request thread.

At some point I intend to modify the game to include the Doomsday changes, Mostly spies. I would also like to include events for the next 7 years, perhaps an alliance between the US and the Byzantines to check the Soviets, could be fun.

I have also been considering creating a new Doomsday scenario in which the Byzantines join the Allies instead of the Central Powers. Im thinking a larger stronger Byzantine Empire that may regain its mastery over much of Europe.

Thoughts?

Hey, Hammerfalls! Thanks for your mod, I've been having a blast playing... and modding... it!

I've done the spies - if you want to PM me your email, I'll see if I can zip up the files and send them to you. I'll also PM you some bugs I found.

If you're interested, the version of your mod I'm playing at home has about 40 new events and one new country added, and I'd be happy to pass it on to you and see if you like it.

EDIT BELOW THIS:

I have also been considering creating a new Doomsday scenario in which the Byzantines join the Allies instead of the Central Powers. Im thinking a larger stronger Byzantine Empire that may regain its mastery over much of Europe.

Thoughts?

Start it off with Bulgaria, Syria, Rhodes, and a much larger navy (comparable to the Italian) if it was Allied in WWI instead of Central. That also justifies copying and pasting the entire Bulgarian leader list to the U13 one, which helps a *lot* with their leader shortage. Consider it the Greek-Bulgarian Empire. If you want to make it stronger again, consider giving it German land doctrines instead of British ones. Also consider what Serbian-Austro-Hungarian politics at the start of WWI might have been like if there'd been an Orthodox Greek-Bulgar Empire southeast of the Serbs.
