I am sorry that we could not declare to Thrace this session, but domestic matters got our attention. We hope to be better prepared to take our opportunity next session.
It's all good, the domestic situation was interesting. It was also interesting to see how you could manipulate Thrace's disloyal governors to achieve some of your goals without a war. That's a really nice touch that fits well with history.

Good morning,

We have came a long way to 278 BCE and some of our protagonists are already aging. Last session Brinkazis died in his insurrection but our party leaders are also getting old, just look at them:

1645262699513.png

Ioannes, Dizapor and Bryzos are 55 years old or older. Except for Ioannes both leaders have been Archon of Byzantion. Dizapor as long as 26 years ago and now Bryzos is placed to replace Kelsinos in the next election this october in the place of Aulouporis. Because Bryzos is the party leader and it is 16 years since he was Archon for the last time he takes precedence over Aulouporis. He is not a bad Archon so we will not try to manipulate the election.

October ( 278 BCE )

Bryzos has been elected as expected, because he is a popular character we have not had any problems with the other factions accepting the result. Next in line is Aulouporis but he will be 66 years old when the new elections happen.

Our champion, Dizapes Dizapid will be 37 years old in the next election and we hope he will be in the top most popular characters by that time. As a governor he is increasing his popularity.

Now the Agoranomus position is open, it has increased senate influence and some popularity attached. Because of that, we will move Auloupouris from Hierophant to Agoranomus. Being a Head of Family and oligarch, he will increase the faction power in the Boule from this position. For the Hierophant position that does not give popularity but it gives statesmanship we will choose a young character with strong oligarch conviction: Rekiper Mukaporid. He is an average character but will help us on the oligarch ascension in the Boule.

On a different note, we have started building our first aqueduct in Byzantion. After we have finished our third Academy we want Byzantion to start attracting immigrants from around our nation. There is only one other city now that can rival Byzantion and this is Pantikapaion in Taurica. We will promote this healthy competition between these cities, our objective being the advance of our nation in general. Regarding this, our research efficiency is not maxed out, we need to promote more of our citizens to nobles and the best thing to do is building academies in our most populated cities.

November ( 278 BCE )

Kelsinos is asking for a position on the government. Of course he deserves one but we have been waiting him to ask for the position so we can get something in exchange. He is not very rich but we are greedy. We appoint him as Themostete, ousting Moukapious Mukaporid the worst Archon we ever had. Because we do not want Moukapious to ask to come back to the government we also smear his reputation to lower his popularity. Let's hope this is enough to not listen about him anymore.

May ( 277 BCE )

Kelsinos has came back with 226.23 gold for his new position. We knew he will be very grateful! This is the way, the families have to give back to the nation from time to time.

January ( 276 BCE )

The war between Macedon and Antonigonid is still raging. We have taken the decision to actively intervene to speed up its ending. Our fleet was destroyed by Antigonid three years ago and we are rebuilding it. We will march our levies to Ionia and help Macedon win this war.

Byzantion has embraced professional training ideas and now we only need to convince to reform the military laws to the Provisioning Act. This will allow Byzantion to raise a legion. We do it as we have enough Boule support, political influence and stability. Now we will a proper professional army to fight our war with Thrace.

1645266534040.png

Our culture military traditions favour heavy infantry but we do not want to have our army full of expensive heavy infantry units. Instead we will lean to Peltasts and Combined arms to favour our Light infantry units. This will give us more flexibility and make our legions less costly.

We hire the first professional soldiers for the legion and start drilling for the military experience and defense bonus right away.

1645266892798.png

Our first legion drilling in Byzantion City next to Chalkedon city, our feudatory

August ( 276 BCE )

Maisades has won the 126th olympic games! We did not have any faith on him, but now Byzantion has a new olymplic champion besides Kelsinos. It is time to rejoice.

Our naval landing in Ionia has gone the worst way possible. Our not yet rebuilt navy has been intercepted by the Nesiotic league navy and now we are facing a big defeat if we cannot retreat on time.

1645268437987.png

And it is a terrible defeat, his admiral was more experienced and we were flanked by their liburnians, there was nothing we could to to avoid defeat:

1645268535179.png

November ( 276 BCE )

On a positive note, Bryzos in the same fashion as Kelsinos has befriended the Thracian governor of Bithynia et Paphlagonia, Lysippos Alkimachid. By enticing him, Byzantion has won the Thracian provinces that were not loyal to Thrace and became a Major power.

Something else to celebrate, at the naval battle of Propontis, we take vengeance with Athenodoros Lagid and defeat his weakened navy in front of the gates of Byzantion:

1645269452167.png

The late reinforcement from the Aeolia fleet is not enough to avoid a double victory for our navy!

April ( 275 BCE )

Byzantion is out of luck with maritime warfare. The Zenonid's Pirates have defeated and sunk half of our victorious fleet. This is a serious setback once again. Without naval superiority we cannot win our wars.

December ( 275 BCE )

This time around, Byzantion won't fail. We have recruited a pirate navy to fight for us. We are going to take the war goal of the long war of Macedon with Antigonid. The settlement of Aigina is the only thing remaining for Antigonid to clunch the war goal. This situation is caused by their naval supremacy. This is going to end now.

1645270523961.png

But It seems Antigonid has heard about our intentions and is sending his major fleet to stop us. Let's see what is the outcome:

1645270748003.png

We had to escape this battle and we found refuge in the port of Pantikapaion until we gathered our full morale. Now the battle is going to be in Mare Aegaeum and we have light ships against heavy ships of Antigonid. We won't have it easy.

1645271238680.png

Alas! we were deceived, Antigonid did not have heavy ships but liburnians and triremes like us. We are going to win this decesive battle!

1645271320344.png

We beat the Antigonid fleet twice before we can land our troops in Aigina. We let our fleets repair in the Macedonian Port of Athens when we see the Nesiotic league fleet arriving. Luckily they were not around when we engaged the Antigonid navy on the sea, we surely would had been defeated.

But finally the war goal is ours!

1645271578601.png

But our fleet is stuck in Athens until it can be repaired.

1645271642148.png

And finally! our action taking the war goal has made Macedon and Antigonid reach a peace deal. Our war exhaustion was excruciating and being involved in this war was a hindrance to our plan to make Macedon help us with Thrace. We hope we can now declare on Thrace.

This session has already been very long. We will say good bye until next session looking at our Boule composition:

1645272154766.png

As intended, we have many more Oligarch boule influence and their full support. Democrats are not that happy but we could give free hands to some officials to get them on board.

Bonus picture, our long time olympic Champion kelsinos has gone bald:

1645272317158.png

He is still ailing from his infection but we will have the victorious and steadfast Kelsinos for many years to come.

Good afternoon,

January ( 273 BCE )

After Byzantion helped Macedon with their war with Antigonid, we have some loose ends to tie up. First, we pay ransom to Antigonid Kingdom for Kerzoula Gaidrid. He was taken prisoner in the first naval battle with Antigonid.

1645287320193.png

We also have three prisoners: Antikles of the Philaidid, Pantaokos of the Aleuadid dynasty and Pylaemenes Aramid. We release Antikles from Sesamos as now they are our feudatory. The other two come from the Antigonid Kingdom and we expect them to pay a ransom as we paid for Kerzoula. Sad that we could not make an exchange of prisoners.

We start to fabricate a claim on the province of Europa for our war with Thrace. The situation is propitious: Thrace is occupied in a war with the remains of Cappadocia and Macedonia is at peace. We could wait for the new player in town, Seleukid Kingdom to attack Thrace, but that may be many years or never.

Seleukid Kingdom has demonstrated a lot of ambition by taking half of the lower Delta from Egypt. Now they stand as one of the most powerful nations in the known world:

1645288047650.png

As we can see, Byzantion is the 8st power in the World just behind Thrace.

But no sooner we said that that Macedon calls us to arms to join their war against Argos, Sparta and Patrai. Of course we accept but we hope this time we can end it sooner than the previous war.

May ( 273 BCE )

Bosporan Kingdom has finally integrated into Byzantion. We welcome all their heads of family into Byzantion and welcome all the provinces held by them.

July ( 272 BCE )

The war of Macedon with Sparta and their allies is still raging on. We have descended to Laconia to help the Macedonians win their war. We just hope they will do the same for us with Thrace.

September ( 272 BCE )

We have just acquired our claim for Europa territories form Thrace. We only need Macedon to finish their war to attack.

December ( 271 BCE )

Distracted by the Macedonian war, we haven't realized that Thrace is having a revolt. This is a great opportunity, but Macedon does not have what it wants yet. This is really annoying. Not only Thrace is at war with his own revolt, but Armenia has jumped into the war as well, they are in a dire situation:

1645290431592.png

February ( 270 BCE )

The Macedonian war is over. We are going to hire the mercenaries in the city of Abdera, Astakos and Tyras to fight the war with Thrace.

April ( 270 BCE )

Meanwhile, Seleukid Kingdom is getting bolder. They have sacked The Great Temple in Alexandreia. We will remember this crime!

1645290944460.png

February ( 269 BCE )

Macedon has started another war, this time with Epirus. We cannot wait more, we have to strike now. So we declare:

1645291631255.png

Macadeon seems that will join our war. We are afraid with Phyrgia, they have 12,000 men army heading to Caria Superioris. We hope that Macedon will entertain them.

Alas, suprise at the last minute, Macedon declines to join the war:

1645291745668.png

We are alone against Thrace. Let's hope that their war with Armenia will make them more vulnerable. First things first, we have to take the wargoal as soon as possible.

Our mercs and legion will go as fast as possible to Lysimacheia and our fleet will defend the sea of Hellespontus.

1645291911226.png

Meanwhile, Menedemid's Mercenaris will hold the north by attacking the city of Bobiodounos in Olbia.

1645292009955.png

We will try not to raise our levies and only use them as a last resort if we have to go on defensive.

April ( 269 BCE )

The battle of Lysimacheia has started:

1645292216661.png

1645292328293.png

Our troops have less morale and discipline than the Thracian troops but we have numerical advantage and we are flanking their troops. Our legion is coming as well. We hope for a victory this time. And it is a big loss for Thrace:

1645292410512.png

The next battle will be more difficult to tell the outcome. The location will be the city of Bergoule in Europa. Our tiny legion and the Rhaskuporid's Mercenaries will face the Abadanid's mercenaries with the first levies of Thrace from Mesembria and Apollonia Pontica.

1645292702138.png

And we are losing big this one. We will have to retreat to Chalkedon, we cannot beat them without flanking. After this defeat, we dismiss Menedemid's Mercenaris in the north and hire Byzantion Sadalid's Mercenaries. We need to prepare because Phyrgia levy is at our gates sieging the city of Astakos:

1645293080398.png

September ( 269 BCE )

We have won the siege of Lysimacheia! now we retreat our mercenaries to Sestos while we wait the Thracian army in Europe to try to retake the city. We will attack from both sides if they try to siege it. However, our naval supremacy is threaten by the Thracian Navy. They are going to attack us in Hellespontus.

1645293409082.png

We think they will have a Harassment tactic or Frontal assault. To counter it we will take a Frontal Assault tactic for this engagement. Surprise! they have taken probing attack tactic. This gives no advantage to either fleet. Let's see if we can win thanks to having more triremes than they do:

1645293643632.png

Meanwhile, the Thracian armies are trying to retake their capital, we will attack from both sides to crush their mercs.

The naval battle is won! Our Triremes crushed their Liburnians. But we will need to repair the fleet in the Port of the Parion City. The Thracian fleet is repairing in their reconquered port of Bisanthe city.

1645293763176.png

November ( 269 BCE )

When the besiegers of Lysimacheia have known from our troops from Byzantion were coming, they have abandoned the siege and came to Bisanthe City to face our troops. We are concentrating in Perinthos and will come down to Bisanthe hills.

What has just happened? The Thracian mercenaries are leaving the Europa province, could it be that they general is disloyal? Facing us in the hills with superior discipline and morale was a good strategy. Now they have lost their navy that has been expelled from the port and we will face them in open fields where we can flank them.

But first, we go to Astakos to break the siege from the Phyrgian troops. And a brilliant victory ensues:

1645294487415.png

However, we were distracted. The Mercenaries were not disloyal, they were doing a distraction manouver to get more reinforcements and try to retake the Thracian capital and wargoal:

1645294624851.png

That is not a problem. Lysmacheia is in plains and that will allow us to put as many troops as we have in the field, having the flanking factor in our favour. We just need to catch them outside the city for a big win.

And they are trying to escape! but we will catch them, sure we will! Surprisingly, seems that Macedon is helping us with 2,000 troops. Are they now in the war?

1645294811375.png

No, they are not, and we did not catch the Thracian troops outside the city, they escaped to Ornoi. What a disappointment!

August ( 268 BCE )

We sent Maisades again to the Olympic Games and he won again! Praise to him and Byzantion!

Already 10 years have passed and a new election is looming. This time there are no surprises and Aulouporis Gaidrid will become the new Archon. One thing has changed though, now Aoulouporis is oligarch, no more democrat conviction for him. We have achieved this mainly by corrupting him:

1645295360421.png

And our choosen champion has improved a lot in these ten years, Dizapes Dizapid is already the 6th in the line for best candidate, getting many supports to become the next Archon. We will watch after next election who is the best candidate.

1645295187141.png

The war with Thrace is in its climax, we have the war goal, have lost less men but overall from 13 battles we are losing a lot of war score. These are the battles of our feudatories. Best thing is our war exhaustion, 0.0. Because we are not using levies our population is not enduring this war as heavily as Thrace with a war exhaustion of 12.1 from our war and their war with Armenia.

1645295516691.png

Now, we take a break and will continue next session. The war is not decided and all is hanging from who is able to control the war goal. Next session we will have a new Archon and he will have to end this war.

See you next time!

The war is really interesting, even with Macedon not joining. It looks like it's in your favor, but I wouldn't count Thrace out yet. If you win, will you be able to take enough lands to cripple them? I imagine the Thracian pops don't like being under a Hellenic king. Maybe the nation will fracture into tribes if you take the core Hellenic lands.

We will need a lot of warscore to take Europa, but once we break their mercenary stacks they will have no manpower nor will to fight. Thrace has abandoned their east front with Armenia to fight us and are losing big there.

We will try to score big with this war as Macedon is getting stronger and won’t be our ally for ever. Also Seleukid has invaded the lower Delta and is very powerful now. Not to mention the looming threat of Rome, they are coming through Illyria.

Good afternoon everybody, we have a risky situation in Europa:

1645877726726.png

Dizapid's mercenaries are going to engage Thrace Abadanids' Mercenaries, the 1st Levy of Thrace of Mesembria and Apollonia Pontica in the city of Bergoule the next 22nd of August (268 BCE). We are joined by the 2nd Taxis of Stratos Of Bithynia et Paphlagonia led by Ardys Mihranid, a mediocre general leading a very small legion of 1,500 men. This means we are alone. The Thracians have got more morale as they are defending their capital province from our invasion. We have in our favour the increased numbers that will allow our light cavalry to flank the other army. Our light cavalry has a boost in morale due to our tradition: Nobility Ride.

However, the 1st Taxis of Stratos of Thrace led by Hekataios Menid is advancing from the Kypsela settlements in the west and will turn the tides of the battle if we do not do anything. For this reason we are moving Rhaskuporid and Sadalid's Mercenaries with our 1st Taxis of Stratos of Thrace from the city of Lysimacheia to try to meet them in the forest of Nike before they can join the battle in Bergoule.

Our troops will arrive in Ornoi on the 13 August and their reinforcements will get to Nike on the 21 August. We may catch them if we are lucky. We have to improve our armies speed if we want to catch our enemies divided. Brinkazenis Mukaporid, our martial philosopher has told us about Prafectus fabrum and Quick March inventions that we could try to implement as soon as possible.

A part from that, we are moving our 1st Nautikon to the port of Bisanthe to get some repairs. Our units are not fully operational and there is a remaining Thracian fleet docked in the port of Parion.

If we are victorious in Europa, we will send a detachment to liberate our brothers in Astakos. They are being besieged by the Thracian 1st Levy of Cappadocia Taurica and Niketid's Mercenaries are going to reinforce them soon. Eureka! Our envoys to Erasistratos Niketid have arranged an agreement for them to work with us instead of Thrace. They ask for 312 from our treasury. We try this trick that will save us many souls.

1645879637123.png

We will use Niketid band to liberate Astakos.

The battle of Bergoule is looming closer. Surprisingly, the Amisos Legion is not joining our mercs for the first attack and decide to remain in Bisanthe city. Cowards!

Yet again, a new change of events, the Thracian army in Bergoule is fleeing the city and is retreating to the forest of Nike where they will join their reinforcements at the end of August. We must think this through. We have decided to occupy the city but our reinforcements will stop at the farmlands of Ornoi and not ambush the Thracian armies in the forests of Nike where they will have the advantage of combat width and numbers.

The 2nd Nautikon of Thrace have sailed from the port of Parion. Our fleet has not been fully repaired yet, and we decide not to engage them in the Hellespontus sea and wait for a better chance when we are more prepared.

Our troops have arribed in Ornoi and we will wait the enemy next move here. Thrace has reorganized their armies in Nike and is sending their full army to take the city of Bergoule, they will arrive the 5-6 of September. Our troops are waiting there. However, they are not engaged yet. We will wait until Thrace armies in Nike are engaged to move our own reinforcements. Finally the battle for Bergoule will happen.

Meanwhile, our recently bought mercenaries have engaged the Pergamon army in the mountains of Otroia. We did not see them coming in our way to liberate Astakos and their army doubles our mercenaries. They are putting a brave fight but we will retreat them right away to Lysimacheia and reinforce our front there.

October ( 268 BCE )

Aulouporis Gaidrid has been elected to be our next Archon. This is great news and we finally have an oligarch character as Archon:

1645892231430.png

Because we have changed from democrats to oligarchs, we have suffered a stability hit.

The Agoranomus position is now open. We decide to appoint Berisades Dizapid to give more prestige to the Dizapid family and because he has no base power base, he will not be a nuissance in the Boule as he has a strong traditionalist conviction. He may be a problem if he becomes head of the Dizapid family, but he is behind our champion Dizapes Dizapid.

For the next Archon election, the best candidate now is Delos Dizapid. He is a convinced democrat but he is ailing. The oligarchs better positioned are Sadalas Mukaporid and Dizapes Dizapid. Sadalas is our Strategos but this is not giving him enough popularity. We cannot make him friend of Ionnes Ioannus, the faction leader but we can smear reputation from Delos Dizapid to help Sadalas and Dizapes a bit. Dizapes is growing popularity and statesmanship as governor of Cappadocia Pontica. Let's wait for more years and see who can better dispute the elections for Archon.

Thrace has ended his war with Armenia. They have lost their lands in Cataonia, Cappadoccia and Saravene but now they are free to concentrate in our war only.

The bulk of the Thracian army is stalled in the wood of Nike. We moved our reinforcements too soon and they retreated to the woods when they smelled our troops and their sure defeat in the city. Now, with the Thracian-Armenian war over, we have to hurry and attack them. We will move our troops from the city of Bergoule and the farms of Ornoi to attack the Thracian army in the woods of Nike. We have number superiority but they have more morale than us. One point in our favour is the stack of Erasistratos Niketid mercenaries that are coming to our aid in Europa.

We have made our move, and as they saw our troops moving in the Thracians are trying to escape to Kypsela. But Dizapid's mercenaries will be faster than them, they will engage on the 26th of October, one day before they flee. Our reinforcements will arrive on the 27 and 29th.

And the Battle of Nike has started!

1645894153245.png

Their initial formation is superior, with their archers facing our heavy infantry. We confirm that they have superior morale and the combat width on woods will not give us a flanking advantage when in two days our troops from Ornoi arrive to the battle. We also have the terrain penalty being the attacker.

And our reinforcements have arrived. Our front line is doing good, the archers discipline and versus light infantry is giving us great trades with their troops.

1645894373608.png

The battle outcome is very uncertain but after some time our superior numbers allows us to replace our demoralized troops and we are winning the battle! When our general, Zyepiros Dizapid sees that our light cavalry is flanking the enemy units we are certain that this will be a great victory for Bizantion.

1645894596745.png

And so the battle of Nike ends with a sound victory for us.

1645894694116.png

Now it is time to regroup and rescue Astakos and Kios from the siege of the Thracian troops.

In the meantime, we approve the Wealth Levy law to increase our taxes on exports. We will need a lot of money to build our empire. This law gives us a bit of approval from the traditionalists but is not welcomed by the oligarchs or democrats. We will endure their angry faces for some time.

January ( 266 BCE )

Thrace has sent us a peace offer, they will give us Olbia, Mysia Inferioris, Malos and Europa. We think we can win more if we keep this war going, so we decline their peace offer.

February ( 266 BCE )

After some more battles, the people of Byzantion is starting to get weary of this war. War exhaustion is not a problem yet but we have achieved military conquest of all the Thracian lands in the region of Thrace and that is very important for Byzantion as our city is in this region too. Because Thrace is in a worst position they are ready to give us that land and some more. We accept the peace deal.

1645896605395.png

Lysamechia has fallen but we are a civilized nation and we will not sack it but will keep the city unscathed for the glory of the Byzantion nation.

1645896693532.png

To end this session, our cartographers have updated the current borders with the news from all the people travelling through Byzantion, the center of the known world:

Good day to everyone. We have many things to do now that Byzantion has conquered the provinces of Europa, Haemimontus, Rhodope and Thracia from Thrace in the last war.

In our pursuit of expensive trade goods we are fabricating a claim on Aeolia. They are allied with Athens that are a shadow of themselves, being reduced to the city of Hephaistaia in Rhodope. Macedon conquered the fantastic city of Athens and now the Athenian Oligarchic Republic is up to us for the taking. By conquering the rich province of Aeolis from Aeolia we will get access to the dyes produced in Eresos.

We will have to deal in the near future with the remains of Thrace and their allies: Pergamon, Prhygia and the city states in the Pontus Euxsinus sea. But for now we have a truce of five years that we will honor. In the more distant future, our rival will be Macedon itself, our ally now. The new Aristocratic Republic of Rome is growing big and they have made great advances in the region of Illyria. Maybe we could use Macedon to defend our western border against this ambitious Rome.

In any case, we have to be prepared for war. We have a legion that we need to enlarge and get distinguished to provoke fear to our enemies when they see it approaching the battlefield. Now, our legion curriculum is not very long:

1645964014667.png

For military traditions we have chosen our Greek kingdom heritage to achieve the combined arms fantastic bonus to our light infantry. For this reason we will recruit and train this type of troops in the Stratos of Thrace. In the future, our collaboration with the Cappadocian people will allow us to tap their Persian rural traditions and implement their Cataphracts and cavalry skirmish to our legions for increased power.

Finally, on the political side of things, we are thinking to move Dizapes Dizapid from his governorship back to Byzantion. The democrats faction is no longer supporting the Boule as the Archon is an oligarch. We need to reduce their influence if we want to keep expanding and Delos Dizapid, the Aeropagus, is the head of the Dizapid family and this is giving him a lot of influence in the Boule. We swap his position with Dizapes to negate this influence and to have Dizapes grow stronger in the capital.

We also have changed the admiral of the 1st Nautikon, Tzitzis Gaidrid is the new admiral. Being from a major family and oligarch will help us keep him loyal. However, he is leaning to democrats and traditionalists factions faster than oligarch. We need to corrupt him as soon as possible to keep him convinced for the oligarch faction. We need a strong navy now that we are going to fight in the Mare Aegaeum. We have commissioned 20 liburnians to achieve Euxine Patrols.

September ( 266 BCE )

Our move making Delos Dizapid governor of Cappadocia Pontica has backfired. Now he is unloyal and he may trigger an uprising in his region. Basically there is not much we can do if we want to keep control of the Boule. If we allow him to come back, democrats will claim back some of their lost power. And democrats hate our tyranny and corruption.

1645978789142.png

Our next war will not be in foreign lands but an internal one. We could grant him holdings but that will only temporary solve the problem while at the same time create a bigger problem for the future as holdings will make him more powerful. Or we could make friends with him. However, we think we may have a better solution. As oligarchs we favour major families and specially we do not want to battle the Dizapid family, thus we have given Bryzos Dizapid a position as tribute in our Stratos Of Thrace, making the Dizapid family grateful. Let's hope this is enough to buy him over.

May ( 264 BCE )

With our civil war risk finally averted, we declare war to Aeolia with the objective to bring in the war the Athenian Republic and expand our dominions to the lucrative trade of the Asia region in Anatolia. At the same time we are fabricating a claim in Thrace for Mysia Inferioris. We will finish the Thracians and their allies when the truce ends.

October ( 264 BCE )

As all wars should be, the first and last Byzantion war against Aeolia is finished before winter arrives. We have annexed all of their lands, and now we will wait three years until we can start a war with Thrace again.

April ( 263 BCE )

Terrible news indeed. He was 70 years old but Ioannes Ioannus Caesar has been the Oligarch faction leader from the start and we are terrible sorry that he is leaving us. Since we started this campaign we were surprised that the Oligarch leader was a minor character and not from a major family, but Ioannes was a special character, with the conqueror, victorious, brave, reckless and energetic traits, he was a self-made man. He was also kind and only at later years he become dumb and affected by a diphtheria that finally broke him.

In 299 BCE Ioannes helped us with our relations with Paphlagonia, a nation that now is under our domains. We wanted Ioannes to become our Archon but at his prime time the Boule had not enough Oligarchs to elect him. Now we have fulfilled his dream and the Boule is dominated by them and we have a recently convinced oligarch in power. In 283 BCE, while Physician he saved the life of our Archon and olympic champion Kelizons Dizapid when he had some hair left. And one year after, he lend Kelsinos money to pay his debts.

We are devastated but death comes to all of us. We only hope that the younger leaders can fill Ioannes boots. For now, the faction leader is Aulouporis Gaidrid, Ioannes long friend and Archon of our nation. But at 70 years old, he is not the future of Byzantion.

As a replacement for the physician office, we appoint Raskos Dizapid, a 23 years old from the Dizapid family. He is a strong traditionalists convinced character, but he will help the Dizapid family get more prestige.

With this sad news we have to finish this session. However, we want to bring a positive note to the campaign and it is our beautiful city of Byzantion that has already 11 trade routes, four shy for the achievement of 15.

Welcome back to Byzantion!

April ( 263 BCE )

Markipor Mukaporid at 25 years old has finally got a spouse. He is now married to Dentustaina Dizapid. Marko himself being son of Murko Dizapid and Dizapor Mukaporid, our traditionalist faction leader nonetheless. Markipor is also friend to Dizapes Dizapid, his cousin and the character we have put our hopes to become the next Archon.

Dentustaina Dizapid has no strong family relation with Markipor's mother, Murko Dizapid. However, the same surname has given us serious doubts about their offspring health. We will pay attention to this new generation of leaders of Byzantion.

On the downside, Markipor is dumb, tactically inflexible and epileptic. We do not forsee a great future for him. However, we expect Dentustaina to have a long life and many healthy children before Markipor leaves this world.

Dizapes Dizapid himself is married to Eptesykos Dizapid, the daughter of Delos Dizapid, rival of Dizapes' father Rheboulas Dizapid. Rheboulas and Delos are from the same Dizapid family but not closely related. Dizapes and Eptesykos have got two children: Naipor and Daizo, 5 and 1 year old respectively. Both are healthy and Daizo already is showing very good polymath traits.

Let's hope that inbreeding does not become a problem in Byzantion ruling families and that all these characters have taken the family surname after being adopted.

July ( 263 BCE )

Our democrat leader, Bryzos Dizapid, has been investing in opportunities. He is not one of the richest characters in Byzantion and now being a Tribune without leading a legion does not give him much income. He has got two holdings in Askelpios and Euchaita, that are sparsely populated. Our character with more holdings is Zieisis Sortid, head of family with eight holdings in the region of Bithynia et Paphlagonia, but he is not one of the richest men in Byzantion either.

The three most rich men in Byzantion are:
  1. Dolens Dizapid, governor of Bithynia et Paphlagonia and only 31 years old with 536 wealth
  2. Dizapor Mukaporid, governor of Taurica, traditionalists faction leader and head of family with 7 holdings, 447 wealth
  3. Auloporis Gaidrid, our Archon, head of family with 7 holdings, 385 wealth
If Auloporis is still alive after the next elections in five years, we will make him beg for a position in our government to pay back this favour with his money.

October (263 BCE )

Tzitzis Gaidrid, a young oligarch leading the 1st Nautikon has became rival of Dizapor Mukaporid by provoking him. Very foolish of him to do this as Dizapor is the leader of the traditionalist faction. He is now far away from Byzantion in Taurica, but his followers can try to take vengeance on Tzitzis. With this move Tzitzis has increased his attraction to the traditionalist faction, is he maybe trying to challenge Dizapor leadership? It is true that Dizapor is in very poor health, but Tzitzis is no where as powerful as other members of the traditionalists faction. We will know soon enough who is going to succeed Dizapor.

December ( 263 BCE )

Mukapora Mukaporid has came of age. She has shown a cruel trait and would have made a perfect tyrant. Byzantion is loosing a fine character, fit for a Legate or Governor, because she is a woman. She is the daughter of Sadalas Mukaporid, the Strategos and the best candidate for Archon in the next election.

We are still supporting Dizapes Dizapid, but Sadalas statesmanship at his 62 years old is far greater than what Dizapes has achieved in his 42 years of career. But Dizapes new position as Areopagus will allow him to catch up with Sadalas soon. We are glad that we brought him back to Byzantion to prepare for leadership. Dizapes got very popular being a Governor but in the government he is learning to pull the right levers.

The best positioned candidates for next election are:

1646429945496.png

Bryzos Dizapid was Archon ten years ago when the election are due and so he will not be elegible, the same as Aulouporis the current Archon. The race is between Sadalas and Dizapes.

March ( 262 BCE )

On the international sphere, Nabatea gave up some territories to avoid a war with Seleukid Empire. Threatening war is another way to expand without the risks of open conflict. However, our soldiers are asking for lands to plunder since our last war with Aeolia two summers ago. We are preparing for our truce with Thrace to end next summer and we will declare. We will occupy the majoritarian Cybelene lands in the region of Phrygia that are under the rule of Thrace and its Satrapy. We are only interested in holding the rich lands in the Asia region, though.

Besides Thrace, our closest threats are Armenia and Seleukid Empire. Hopefully they will declare each other war and they do not attack us. Seleukid is very big and has many fronts to keep. Armenia is more of a problem, as they are invested in Cappadocia both Taurica and Pontica.

Macedon is also growing very ambitious in the lands of Ionia in the region of Asia that we covet for ourselves. Sadly we will have to declare against them sooner than later.

On a domestic note, Kelsinos Sortid, our civic researcher, has befriended Gyges Gaidrid. Gyges is from the same family than Kelsinos spouse, Rhymesikos Gaidrid. Surprise, surprise, Rhymesikos Gaidrid is the mother of Tzitzis Gaidrid, the admiral of the 1st Nautikon that now is rivaling Dizapor Mukaporid. Tzitzis father was Raizdos Gaidrid, who was crucified in agony sixteen years ago after the Brinzakis Gaidrid insurrection. Let's hope that Tzitzis is not seeking revenge for his father death by rivaling Dizapor Mukaporid.

With this possible treasonous plot brewing we will finish this short session today. Tomorrow we will focus on the war with Thrace while our characters keep plotting and Byzantion prepares to elect his 9th Archon of the Modern Era.

Good night and see you tomorrow.

April ( 262 BCE )

Moukapius Mukaporid, the Daduchos, has became rival of Epteporis. Why Moukapius should be provoking Epteporis escapes all of our logic. She is married to Dolens Dizapid, the governor of Bithynia et Paphlagonia but Moukapius does not seem to have any grudge with the couple. Maybe it is his abrasive character and silver tongue that makes Moukapius talk to much during the festivities. The good natured and now depressed Epteporis does not deserve this treatment from Moukapius. Also, Moukapius is 71 years old, what is he looking for in a 23 years old married woman? Our only conclusion is that Moukapius is a bad man that we will not mourn when he dies. Something that may not be far away as he is attacked with Dysentery and Diphteria.

Meanwhile Ziesis Sortid, the man with most holdings in Byzantion, has been investing in opportunities. Should not be such a content character and he would have been a top oligarch for our nation. However, we want him happy as he is a vengeful character and being head of the Sortid family we do not want him against us.

Now, for the record we will explain who is us. We are Byzantion's modern era spirit. We were born in 304 BCE and we are immortal as long as the people in Byzantion believes in us.

In other news, the explorer Demodamas of Miletos has decided to settle in Byzantion. And we swiftly grant him citizenship status. He may become a very valuable asset for Byzantion.

Finally, Chersonesus city has became an Argonaut Haven. The myths of Herakles and Jason show how far these lands have come from the dark days of the past.

May ( 262 BCE )

Preparing the next war with Thrace, we have hired the Zosimid's and Abadanid's mercenaries from Macedon and Thrace. They are travelling to Byzantion to prepare for the incoming invasion. Together with our Legion 1st Taxis of Stratos of Thrace we shall be able to finish Thrace and its allies.

The countdown for the war has started, March next year Byzantion will attack.

Dolens Dizapid has claimed a holding in Bithynia et Paphlagonia. He is the richest man in Byzantion and this is his first holding. We are very proud of him and we see him as a future head for the Dizapid family. His conviction is traditionalist but we are bribing him to increase his corruption to make him lean to the oligarchs faction. Byzantion still needs to wage some wars and we will need the oligarchs faction for some time before we can have some peace. At 32 years old, he can be the next generation after Dizapes Dizapid. When he becomes 35 years old we will bring him to Byzantion to raise him to power.

Awful news! Kelsinos Dizapid our Themosthete, twice olympic champion and Archon of Byzantion 20 years ago is dead!

Kelsinos saw the expansion of Byzantion in Anatolia, leading the wars against the defensive league lead by Calchedon. He was the victor in the siege for Astakos. He contrived Pox during that war but Ioannes cured him short after. Then Kelsinos was able to defeat the rebellion of Brinkazis Gaidrid before he finished his term as Archon.

His last years as Themosthete have been difficult for Kelsinos, attacked by Dysentery and Inflammation he has been enduring strong pains until the end. We will always remember him as our Olympic champion and strong leader (with hair):

1646483692697.png

Now that the powerful position of Themosthete is open, we have to chose a candidate. We have two minor characters with oligarch conviction: Timotheos Helenid, a very rich character from the former Athenian Republic and the explorer Demodamas Onomarchid. The later is more loyal to the Republic than Timotheos. But Timotheos has better charisma and oligarch conviction. We chose Timotheos as the Dizapid family is already grateful with Byzantion.

With this sad news we have to finish this session. The ancient glories of Byzantion are dying of all age and all this mourning is very sad. Hopefully next session we will have new military victories and champions to celebrate.

See you next time!

Good day everyone, today we will have war again.

June ( 262 BCE )

Rekiper Mukaporid, the Hierophant, has befriended Kassandros Megalid. The Megalid family was one of the ruling families in the Bosporan kingdom before we annexed them eleven years ago and now they are not counted in the major families of Byzantion. Only Kassandros and Lysandros Megalid are alive but both are very old with 64 and 66 years old respectively. Their spouses and children disappeared into obscurity when they were integrated in Byzantion. It seems there is no room for minor characters and their families in the Byzantion circles of power.

January ( 261 BCE )

This is the year, in March we go again to war with Thrace.

Before that, Dizapor Muakporid has tried to assassinate Tzitzis Gaidrid, the admiral of the 1st Nautikon. Luckly for us he hasn't been successful but It was clear from the start that Dizapor will not tolerate Tzitzis ambitions. Tzitzis has changed his conviction to democrat, although he will soon turn to tradionalist due to his narrow-minded and zeal traits. Now we have a problem, the admiral of the 1st Nautikon has a great influence in the Boule and Tzitzis being a democrat is not helping us. He has also became unloyal. We bribe him and we will see what we do with him after the war is finished.

And Macedon calls us to war, how typically of them. Three months shy from our own declaration they call us into a war with Tilataeia, Dindaria, Albocensia and Dardania. Macedon should be fine without us, those are petty tribes in the Illyria and Macedonia regions. We will accept their call, but we will not send any army to help them.

March ( 261 BCE )

We declare on Thrace for the province of Mysia Inferioris. Zozimid's mercenaries are fully equipped and ready in the city of Illion and will advance to take the settlement of Skepsis, the capital of the Thracian Aeolis province. Abadanid's mercenaries in Apollonia Rhyndakos will move the capital of Thracian Mysia Inferioris of Miletopolis. They will bring fast victories and control of the war goal. Our 1st Stratos of Thrace will come from Byzantion to fight any resistance from Phyrgia, the satrapy of Thrace.

The invasion will continue south to Pergamon and Sardis, the two other satrapies from Thrace. Our main objective is to have their rich lands. If the war goes well for us, we will try to subjugate Phyrgia as well. Our spies have told us that Thrace is integrating Phrygia and we do not want that to happen.

1646562698535.png

May ( 261 BCE )

The war goes as planned, the resistance from Thrace is very weak but they got attacked by surprise and their response may come later. The strongest opposition comes from the Thracian feudatories in the Pontus Euxinus coast, Apollonia Pontica, Mesembria, Odessos, Krounoi, and Kallatis. They have taken control of our Apollonia Pontike province and their armies are marching to Byzantion. To face them we have hired the Sadalid's Mercenaries in Byzantion. Soon enough they will be ready to attack them and recover our loses in Thrace.

Now they have appeared! We told you, the 1st Levy of Phrygia is coming from Sardis and is trying to engage Abadanids' Mercenaries in the city of Hyssa. We have to retreat them back to the war goal and reinforce with our legion there. The 1st Levy of Phrygia is 14,000 men strong, mostly light infantry but they have also heavy cavalry and heavy infantry. Because they outnumber us, we shall not engage them on the plains. Our best option is to move the battle to the swamps of Miletopolis, the war goal.

They caught our mercenaries but before we fight to the last men, we retreat our army. The battle of Hyssa is very positive for us, we killed 1650 troops and only lost 904, but more important, we have located their main army and we will set them a trap:

1646564203611.png

June ( 261 BCE )

Our diplomacy has scored a goal. The Plutocratic Republics of Orgame and Tomis have agreed to become feudatoris of Byzantion. This will help us reinfoce the north front and secure their markets for our products in the future.

The combined armies of Apollonia Pontica and Mesembria are laying siege to Byzantion. Our mercenaries have set up camp in Chalkedon to repenish their army before attacking them. Watching Byzantion being besieged is not nice but we have to be patient.

On the other hand, our trap is going quite well, the 1st Levy of Phrygia is moving to the war goal. We have told Kerzoula Gaidrid to stop our legion at Appollonia Rhyndakos and our mercenaries in the city of Daskyleion to wait for the enemy to make their move. When they are locked in their movement, we will attack them.

July ( 261 BCE)

Our enemy is not stupid. They have stopped in the forests of Attea and are waiting there. So we have decided to attack them with our legion and our fresh mercenaries. We will let Abadanid's mercenaries to recover in the war goal and try to win a battle in the forest. of Attea agains the 1st Levy of Phrygia.

What a difference it makes to fight with a Legion. Our Light infantry is holding very good in the center while the forest does not allow us to flank their troops. Our general is also much better than theirs, overcoming the land and attacker penalties:

1646564697611.png

We have won and now it is time to break the siege on Byzantion. We are moving the Abadanids' mercenaries and our legion to help Sadalid's troops to break it.

November ( 261 BCE )

We do not need to fight, when the attackers in Byzantion see our legion they took out the camp and start fleeing. These are great news for us, however this has been a distraction and we need to concentrate in our objective south in Anatolia.

January ( 260 BCE )

Awful news! Our Archon, Aulouporis Gaidrid has died of Dysentery at the age of 73. Aulouporis was the head of the Gaidrid Family and also the oligarchs faction leader. The new head of family of the Gaidrid family is Sparadokos Gaidrid, a democrat convinced that now is working as a researcher. We will have to change that as soon as the war is over. The new oligarch faction leader is Kelsinos Sortid, he is working as a researcher and has very low power base.

There has been an urgent election and as previewed, Sadalas Mukaporid extensive statesmanship has allowed him to beat our champion Dizapes Dizapid. The Strategos office is vacant. We choose Dizazelpis Sortid for the job, he is 16 years old with an infection but he is a convinced oligarch. Let's hope he can survive the infection to become a prominent character in 20 years.

February ( 260 BCE )

Moukapious Mukaporid has died, he was the worst Archon we had and we will not mourn him as he was a bad person. His position as Daduchos is for Pytros Dizapid, a 16 years old uncaring fellow that will become part of the new generation of Byzantion characters that help our expansion.

October ( 260 BCE )

War is still going on, the fortress of Pergamon and Sardeis are taking very long to siege down and we cannot order and assault because the nations of Pergamon, Sardis and Phrygia are hiring mercs that will defeat our depleted armies on the spot. It is a matter of patience until they fall.

The head of the Dizapid family, Delos Dizapid has died due to a highly stressful environment at the age of 74. He was the Governor of Cappadocia Pontica and this war has taken a toll with him. We are sad to see him go. He was our Archon 30 years ago and his great achievement was the war with Pontus that set in motion the ambitions of Byzantion in Anatolia. We will honour him as a war and a national hero.

1646567109749.png

February ( 259 BCE )

We have won the siege of Pergamon, now only the fortress of Sardeis in Sardis remains. Phrygia is largely the only nation resisting us, let's hope this war ends soon.

May ( 259 BCE )

The last of our elders has died this month. Bryzos Dizapid at the age of 73 has died of Dysentery. He had been twice our Archon, 20 and 40 years ago. As a democrat he integrated the Bosporan people in Byzantion and conquered Olbia in his first term. Twenty years later he repeated and he founded the first legion of Byzantion and helped Macedon win his war against the Antigonid Kingdom. We wanted him to see how we ended the second war with Thrace, to finish what he helped start, but death does not wait and now he will join our Pantheon of Byznation heroes:

1646568314715.png

The new head of the Dizapid family is Rheboulas. We will give him a small governorship as soon as the war ends to neutralize his influence in the Boule.

July ( 259 BCE )

The old generation is now gone. Dizapor Mukaporid has died at the age of 79 for natural causes. He was our first Archon during the first five years of this campaign. Also he was the traditionalist faction leader. Now it is not Tzitzis who has replaced him as the traditionalist leader but Maisades Sortid, our oratory researcher.

Dizapor did not achieve much for Byzantion, but we consider him the starter of our journey. He is not at the same level as Bryzos, Delos and Kelsinos but he will be remember in the future when Byzantion stops growing and achieves lasting peace and stability. He worked all his life for these ideals, but Byzantion needs to be strong to face his enemies if we want to perdure.

We appoint Rheboulas Dizapid as the governor of Taurica in the place of Dizapor Mukaporid.

August ( 258 BCE )

Finally! the siege for Sardeis is over. Only Phrygia is resisting our forces but this war has gone for ages, our people deserves a period of peace.

1646570572242.png

We obtain Mysia Inferioris, Aeolis and Mysia Superioris from Thrace, annex Pergamon and Sardis while making Thrace liberate Tyrgetae and Istros and realease Apollonia Pontica and Mesembria. We do not want Thrace to threaten Byzantion never more.

We give refuge to all the heads of families of Pergamon and Sardis as they are all oligarchs.

This war was to give Byzantion enough power to stand alone against anyone trying to destroy it. The world we live on has not become less threatening, though. Armenia and Macedon are as powerful as Byzantion. Rome and Carthage are more powerful albeit far away for now. Seleukid Empire dwarfs everyone else but they are our main trade partner and we want to keep it this way:

1646571381582.png

Now Macedon bars our expansion south the Asia Region, where many rich territories are. If Macedon were to break our alliance, we may take the opportunity to grab those lands from them. But this is a story to unveil in the next sessions.

Thank you for reading!

Enjoying reading your stories as always ! Could you sometime describe how you organize your armies (which cohort in front, which one in second line) and why; also which tactics you use during the battles ? Thanks !

Mostly I am applying the knowledge I have learnt from playing MP in Molon Labe discord server. The key point is the following:
  1. Maximizing the damage formula https://imperator.paradoxwikis.com/Damage_formula
total_damage = base_damage * strength * discipline * loyalty * terrain * versus * offense_vs_defense * tactics * experience * damage_done * damage_taken
  • Base damage is function of dice rolls and terrain & Leader modifiers, thus you want always to have the best general possible
  • Strength: you want to have always your cohorts full at 500, never engage an army with cohorts not full. Use Unit reorganization and Consolidation if you have cohorts with less than 500 men (https://imperator.paradoxwikis.com/Army)
  • Discipline: very important to increase it always possible using inventions (https://imperator.paradoxwikis.com/Martial_inventions) and military traditions (https://imperator.paradoxwikis.com/Military_traditions). You can increase your strength and morale damage the most with discipline
  • Versus: this value is fixed from the game start (https://imperator.paradoxwikis.com/Land_units#Unit_type_combat_effectiveness) but it does not change. You can improve any units in the game, except supply trains and engineers, to be killing machines no matter the intial versus value.
  • Offense_vs_defense: as said in the previous point, offense_vs_defense can be improved by military traditions and martial inventions to make any unit you choose very powerful against any other unit by stacking modifiers
  • Tactics: quite a gamble, you can try and guess your opponent tactic but the tactic is not that important (tactics = countering ? (1.0 + tactic_damage * tactic_effectiveness) : (countered ? 0.9 : 1.0)). Remember that using frontal assault you are increasing strength damage by +10% while using skirmish you are decreasing it by -25% (https://imperator.paradoxwikis.com/Land_warfare#Combat_tactics). If you have superior defense, you will want to use Frontal Assault to increase damage to your enemy.
  • Experience: very important, it gives you defence up to a reduction on damage of 30%. Legions can drill to get to 100% experience = 30% damage reduction. You can get experience by drilling your legions that also gives you military points. Experience = 1.0 - 0.3 * experience_percent * (morale_damage_taken + strength_damage_taken) / 2.0
  • damage done and damage taken is for naval
To answer your question:

In this campaign I am using mercenaries as cannon fodder and to assault forts. I am training a legion that will specialize in Light infantry in the center and Heavy Cavalry on the sides with Light cavalry at the flanks when I have the terrain width and numerical advantage to flank the enemy troups. Light cavalry has 3 manouver, so it can attack units that are 3 spaces from them.

I have chosen Light Infantry as my main unit because they are cheaper to mantain, eat less food and have less attrition than Heavy Infantry. For a small nation like Byzantion is the best unit, also I will make them very powerful by investing in the following military traditions and inventions (always very important in an Imperator:Rome game, to plan your military traditions).

Greek Poleis Tradition:

1646678795881.png

Greek Kingdom Traditions:

1646678895798.png

1646678912731.png

1646678930221.png

1646678951853.png

I also have integrated the Cappadocian Culture. By drilling my legion I am getting military experience that will allow me to unlock more military traditions. You do not want to unlock all the traditions on your tree but specialize, thus I will follow the Greek tree to achieve the Embrace Graeco-Persian Influence, giving me more Heavy and Light Cavalry bonuses:

1646679174306.png

1646679208256.png

1646679221896.png

These last traditions and having the Cappadocians integrated allows me to follow the powerful Persial Rural Traditions tree:

1646679303893.png

1646679319723.png

With only 10 military traditions we have specialized our units and give them very good bonus:

LI: +25% morale +15% discipline +15% offence + 15% defense +15% combat plains
LC: +15% morale +15% combat plains
HC: +25% morale +10% discipline +40% offence +25% defense +15% combat plains

When I reach this point I will try to have all my battles in plains and use LI (1st line) + HC (2nd line) + LI (flanks)

Every nation and starting location is different, as you have to study your military traditions and the cultures around you to achieve the best bonus for your legions/levies units.

Clear and comprehensive as usual. Thank you ! And it's interesting to see someone focusing on LI like you do, usually most of the comments I read from the forums consider this is the worst unit in the game (after the chariots). This game becomes a real gem when we go deep into its mechanism.

Welcome back to Byzantion! We hope to start a peaceful time for the City to grow and maybe change from oligarchs to traditionalists or democrats. For now the oligarchs are the only option as we have accrued so many tyranny in the last decades to allow for the expansion of Byzantion.

The political leaders of each faction have recently changed after the death of our beloved Ioannes Ioannus, Dizapor Brinkazerid and Bryzos Dizapid in the last years:

1647192345240.png

Political leaders in Byzantion circa 258 BCE
For the Oligarchs we have Kelsinos Sortid. From the Sortid family, he is second to Ziesisis Sortid as the head of the family. Being a researcher in Byzantion he is increasing his popularity and statesmanship and is poised to be the next Archon of Byzantion in four years. He is more popular than Dizapes Dizapid due to his charisma and being the faction leader. However, Dizapes is achieving very high statesmanship as Areopagus and we might see him dispute the Archon to Kelsinos in the next elections. Also Kelsinos is 64 years old, he might not finish his term.

For the Traditionalists we have the 40 years old Maisades Sortid. Very looking good lad from the Sortid family as he is son of the same Kelsinos Sortid, leader of the Oligarchs. He is now a researcher in Byzantion and maybe a future Archon of Byzantion if we can keep it at peace for enough time to reduce our tyranny.

The Democrats are led by the head of the Gaidrid family, Sparadokos. He is the Governor of Cappadocia Pontica so we keep them away from the Boule in Byzantion. He has only one daughter alive, Dizo Gaidrid, married to Ziepyros Mukaporid. However, at 68 years old and with cancer, Sparadokos will soon die and leave his family leadership to Ziaelas Gaidrid. Who will be the next faction leader for the Democrats is not known but we will be prepared.

Finally, on the bestowment agenda of the Oligarchs, we do not have any problem giving them a holding to each head of family. We will wait Sadalas Mukaporid to bring forward his demands to accept them.

On the World stage, we would like to finish the Maiotic ambition and take Tanais from Scythia. Now they are our allies but we will dissolve this alliance right away. This will give us a truce with them, that we will honour until the date it finishes when we will attack Scythia with our Taxis of Stratos of Thrace. Our legion is 5,500 men large, good for Scythia but not enough for Macedon or any other real threat to Byzantion. For this reason we will drill to unblock the Victor's Spoils Greek Poleis Tradition to be able to slave raid. We will bring many slaves to grow Byzantion. Now we are at par with cities like Pella, Rome and Alexandria but we want to become as big as the metropolis of Carthage or the famous but distant Pataliputra in Magadha.

We put and end to this nonsense, Raskos should not be a rival to Sadalas. the Mukaporid family loses prestige with this action but we do not want major families to increase their prestige as that gives them more base power and fills them with grand ideas to lead the nation in the future. We must see other means to keep our important people loyal rather than give important families many offices in the government. We would like to become a meritocracy with major families being scorned and a Democrat dominated Boule. But this will take many years to happen.

November ( 257 BCE )

Rheboulas Dizapid has died of lunacy at 71 years old. He was the head of the Dizapid family and governor of Taurica. He is also the father of Dizapes and Murko. Now the Dizapid family is lead by Desakenthos Dizapid, attacked by diphtheria. Because he is a democrat we will send him as the governor of Taurica like Rheboulas was.

Desakenthos becomes unloyal right away he arrives in Taurica and threatens Byzantion with a civil war. We give him free hands and avoid the Dizapid family rebellion for some time. However, our plans to expand in Schythia will give Desakenthos more power and it will be very difficult for us to stop him rebelling.

November ( 256 BCE )

Finally, Sadalas has made his move pushed by Kelsinos. They are asking for holdings and we are happy to indulge them. These are much reserved rewards.

1647196304606.png

This move will make major families more powerful and more rebellious. Our future move to become a more peaceful country with a democrat Boule may become more difficult, but we are not afraid of them. We have used them to expand Byzantion and when we do not need them anymore, we will not hesitate to ditch them. They have became filthy rich and that should be their reward and malediction. We won't allow them to rule Byzantion for ever.

May ( 255 BCE )

We have uncovered a plot to assassinate Dizapes Dizapid. Zieisis Sortid the head of family wants him dead. Zieisis hasn't died yet of diphtheria and is very vengeful. Dizapes being his rival may be concentrating his frustation with his very poor health. But we have to stop this! We do not want Dizapes dead at the hands of Zieisis assassins. Even if the scheme has very low probabilities of success, we intervene to lower them even more.

December ( 255 BCE )

Sparadokos Gaidrid has died of dysentery at the age of 71. We knew this was coming for some years now. The new Democrat leader is the young Maisades Gaidrid, son of our past Archon Aulouporis Gaidrid. He has a bright future in front of him. Now the democrats have no power and they do not support Byzantion, but all of this will change in the future.

1647197257756.png

The new head of the Sortid family is Ziaelas as expected. He is now admiral of the 1st nautikon. We replace him and appoint him as governor of Cappadocia Pontica.

Now the situation of the Boule is the following:

1647197680860.png

With a majority of Oligarchs and full support they are dictating everything in Byzantion. Can this be changed? Our tyranny is very high and nothing seems to make it go down. We will see what solutions can be applied next session.

Also next session, we will unleash war in Scythia to advance in the Hospitable Sea mission with the objective of becoming Master of The Pirates!

More Byzantion today!

Our aim for this session is to expand in Scythia and to reduce tyranny to become a democratic country.

To attack Scythia we have to wait 3 years before the truce ends.

To reduce tyranny we have to abstain to take decisions that increase tyranny and maybe take the Divine Mandate idea. We could also go with the right tree of oratory advances and get Adventus and Chironomia. Even if we take all these paths, tyranny will take long time to decrease in Byzantion. We have behaved as tyrants for many years and this is something that takes years to forget.

Next election is in 5 years, and Kelsinos Sortid is still number one for Archon of Byzantion. Dizapes Dizapid is second and if we can, he will be the last oligarch Archon. Having Dizapes as an Archon will be a success for Byzantion, as we have nurtured him for this position and now is only 15 years away to get the job. With 50 years old, Dizapes will be 65 when becoming Archon, let's hope he does not get ill during these years. Being the Areopagus in Byzantion will allow him a good life. The only threats are assassination attemps, and we are currently monitoring his rivals and stopping when they try. This is the case of Ziesis Sortid, who is trying to assassinate Dizapes, although we made our best to give him the less chances possible. His other rival is Kassandros Megalid, he is content in life and near death, probably will not be a problem for Dizapes.

Feb ( 254 BCE )

Desakenthos Dizapid has finally died while governing Taurica. Head of the Dizapid family he leaves no children alive but an ailing wife, Purizia Gaidrid. Now the Dizapid family is led by Dizapes! He will increase the influence of the oligarchs in the Boule in Byzantion being the head of family and the Aeropagus. We need more Boule support if we want to decrease Tyranny, as any decision taken without the 50% Boule support will increase tyranny.

For the position of Governor in Taurica, we appoint Rhesos Sortid, being weak-willed he has increased loyalty and he is not corrupted. We will need him strong and loyal as we will expand our territories in the Taurica region when we attack Scythia.

November ( 254 BCE )

Yet again another head of family and governor of Byzantion is dead. Zieisis Sortid, who was plotting to assassinate Dizapes, has died of a terrible fever at the age of 71. Once, he was the single character with more holdings in the whole Byzantion. The new head of the Sortid family will inherit all of those holdings and more. The affortunate is Kelsinos Sortid, the leader of the oligarch party and probably next Archon of Byzantion. He will mark the peak of Oligarch power, or at least we hope.

For the position of Governor of the Sarmatia Europea we appoint Moukazenis Mukaporid, an oligarch character that is loyal to Byzantion due to the oligarchs high faction approval. He is not corrupted yet and will please the Mukaporid family. The region of Sarmatia Europea is one of the best to send a Head of family of the wrong faction whenever we need it, as the Region is small enough to not give him enough power to create problems.

March ( 253 BCE )

We have convinced the people of Odessos and Kallatis to transfer their protection from Thrace to Byzantion. They are unloyal to Thrace and we have been gaining their favours.

1648317358721.png
1648317406698.png

We are also working with the people of Krounoi. They are still not convinced but they are unloyal to Thrace, so we will keep insisting.

June ( 253 BCE )

Dolens Dizapid, the governor of Bithynia et Paphlagonia has became incredible corrupt. This is making our citizens unhappy and provoking unrest through the region. We will replace him as we cannot impose him sanctions because he is a crafty character.

The most able character with no corruption is Demodamas Onomarchid. He is not from a major family but he has incredible finesse and for a governor that will serve him well.

August ( 253 BCE )

Macedon calls us to arms yet again to fight the Hellenic nations of Sparta, Ionia, Oreos, Neiotic League and Antigonid Kingdom. This time we will not honour the call and lose our alliance with them. We do not need them anymore, on the contrary, we would like them to attack us so we can take some of the land they have in the region of Asia.

Let's see how this war of them is going and we will decide on their fate in the future.

March ( 252 BCE )

Finally the people of Krounoi have accepted us as their overlord. Thrace presence is now a shadow of itself. If we were interested we could take all their lands in Thrace in a war.

Our next objective is quite bigger, Phrygia. With Thrace debilitated, Phrygia is a stronger satrapy than his overlord. We will use this to change their allegiance to Byzantion. That would be a big coup if we can do it.

On an international note, Macedon is losing his war with the Hellenic kingdoms. Their wargoal was to take the Cyclades and they are losing. The Antigonid Kingdom is taking its opportunity and sacked the city of Stratos in Aetolia. However, Macedon has won all the naval battles and has now naval supremacy, will they use it to finally win the war?

Egypt is asking for an alliance with us. We will decline as we do not have enough power yet to project beyond the Pontus Euxinus. Egypt with Ptolemaios IV Lagid has lost the Delta to the Seleukid Empire led by Antiochos I Seleukid. They are weak and this alliances will not give us anything but problems.

November ( 252 BCE )

The elections are looming and Kelsinos is going to win, the difference with Dizapid is very close and we could smear his reputation to make Dizapid win the elections. However that will cost us tyranny and we have committed to decrease it. Also Kelsinos is ailing with gout and at 70 years old he will not last long. We will not burn him now.

We are ready to attack Scythia. We have enlisted the Gylippid's and Menedemid's Mercenaries in Taurica and Sarmatia Europea to reinforce our Byzantion Legion. In January we will declare, we want this war over before the next winter.

Our battle plan is to attack with the mercenaries by land while we deploy our legion directly to the capital of Scythia in the Port of Tanais.

1648319987035.png

January ( 250 BCE )

The war in Scythia is going well, however our legion is still too small and it is getting more time than expected to break down the fortifications in Tannis. Now we are regrouping all the mercenaries armies in Tannis to make an assault.

In the mean time, Kelsinos has been appointed as the new Archon of Byzantion. However, Dizapes Dizapid it is not the next best candidate. We will try to solve this by making him friend of the party leader and Archon.

We make Sadalas Mukaporid the Physician. He is not the best in the job but we need his influence in the Boule.

March ( 250 BCE )

Now Kelsinos and Dizapes are friends. Making Dizapes the uncontested best candidate for Archon:

1648320936492.png

April ( 250 BCE )

With the reinforcements of Leosthenid's Mercenaries, the 1st Taxis of Stratos of Thrace has been able to assault the port of Tanais. The war is over!

And with this triumph we end this session. Our tyranny has not decreased much, as we have dictated the governor policy in Taurica and the new region of Sarmatia Asiatica to improve the conversion of the people we have just conquered.

It is clear that conquest and democracy are not friends. We need to stop, our last expansion has been Scythia. Unless the other powers in the World want some with Byzantion and then we will have an opportunity to expand in a defensive war. But that is a story for next session. I leave you with the map of Byzantion in the World:

I was caught with work and IRL issues. But I have the save game and I could keep going, there is a whole world to live full of life.

Thank you for your praise. I am learning a lot with two of the ongoing AAR for I:R right now:

I am going to try to be less of a tutorial and tell more the story of Byzantion, inspired by them.
