New Patch

2.2 is out and it looks really good. Sadly we can't use it until we start a new campaign. But our future campaigns should be greatly enriched by the patch. For starters Carthage will actually be able to get that initial colonization in Iberia going.

And hopefully they fixed that Barbarian bug where they constantly sack a province after it falls, taking the civ rating down 10 points every few months. Thats what has put the brakes on Carthage's colonization in our campaign.

And tribes can convert to Monarchies and the populists have been taken down a peg in republics too. Plus the improvement to character naming, the general/admiral with the highest Martial now takes control in a battle, etc., etc. Should be fun once we get around to it.

Pontus: 499 - 511 AVC

The first decade of the 5th century avc was period of rapid growth for Pontus. It leapt across the Bosporus, defeating Tylis and annexing Thracia to achieve its long sought after goal of administering the Easter Sound Tool. It next responded to a Call to Arms from its ally Egypt and joined them in their war against the wounded, but still dangerous, Seleucid Empire. Fortune smiled upon Pontus and directed the Seleucids
to concentrate their armies in the east, leaving Asia Minor open. Mindful not to offend the gods by over-reaching, Pontus limited itself to liberating the Lydian Greeks and took them within the protective folds of their Kingdom.

Pontus would have contented itself with the peaceful colonization of the wilder Greek and Dacian provinces to the north and west of Thrace, and had indeed established colonies in Tribali and Crobobizi to provide the iron needed for heavy infantry, when chaos broke out within the remnants of the Seleucid Empire's holding in Asia Minor. As revolution spread among these provinces and threatened to spill over into Pontus itself, the Council persuaded
the boy King, Zosimus Appollonid, then only 9 years old, to intervene. But no sooner had Pontus embarked on its mission of mercy, then the predatory, vulture-like, insufficiently Hellinized rulers of Macedonia declared war on Pontus. Though this may have been a blessing in disguise in that it forced
Pontus to deal with the growing and dangerous power of Macedonia, the young King, inexperienced in warfare and diplomacy, decided not to risk waging a two-front war and therefore offered the Seleucid Rebels peace on the very generous terms of their freeing the Greek province of Phyrgia. Having obtained the freedom of these Greek compatriots, young Zosimus turned his attention to Macedonia.

At this point Fortune became a cruel teacher and, as if rebuking the young Zosimus for neglecting his lessons to play at King, allowed Macedonia to escape its fate by enforcing to the letter the peace treaty with
the Seleucid Rebels that the he had so eagerly accepted. Alas, Zosimus had failed to read the fine print: the treaty covered the entire alliance, Macedonia as well as the rebellious Seleucids.

But Fortune is a fickle master. One moment it delivers Macedonia from Pontus and the next, it serves it on a platter. A civil war soon thereafter broke out in Macedonia, and the Macedonian rebels had the temerity
to execute a Pontian ambassador who had arrived merely to help clear up the rumors swirling around a failed assignation attempt of the rebel leader. In reply, Pontus annexed the provinces of Palonia and Maedi as compensation.

As the decade drew to a close, Zosimus, though he had learned much about governance, was still seven years from reaching his age of majority. And, ominously, the Council was in unanimous support for his older cousin, Archelaus Appollonid. Would they be content to wait for Zosimus to mature? Or would they attempt a coup to install Archelaus?

Game Tonight?

Things have been pretty quiet this past week. Everyone busy with 2.2?
I hope tonight's session is still on.

Carthage: Sheltonious
Pontus: KenG
Armenia: AI
Egypt : Pax25

Thanks Ken and Pax for showing up tonight. Tonight's session saw the further decline of the Seleucid Empire and the conversion of Carthage from a republic to dictatorship. Not long after my dictator came to power in Carthage a violent civil war ensued.

A combination of boredom and frustration led me to establish a dictatorship by going crazy on the tyranny. And I mean crazy, my ruthless ruler executed anyone who got in his way, and quickly earned a 21 Tyranny rating. So the civil war afterwards was a given.

Although it was funny that my guy stood all alone, leading his sole army against the rebel hordes. Noone stood by him but yet he prevailed. Ofcourse the destruction that he left in his wake will take some time to fix. To be honest i'm really eager to try out the new patch but can't as long as I'm in the campaign. Could there be sabotage at work? Hmmm.....

Good game tonight guys. I look forward to your posts about tonights events.

Pontus: 524

Pontus is close to realizing its dream of claiming the Black Sea basin as its own. And after that: the entire Greek world will be united.

And after that? Who would want more?

Well, maybe Egypt. By then Egypt will have combined the riches of the two Ptolemic empires into one. At that point, no one will be able to stand up to it: not even Carthage, assuming it survives its civil war.

Can't Make it Monday Night

Hey guys, I have to work and cover a meeting on Monday night at 7pm so I won't be able to make this week's game. Unless we reschedule to another night? Since we have so few players this shouldn't be hard to do.

Tuesday this Week

Since Pax can't play on Monday, and all four of us can play on Tuesday, then I'm going to assume that this Monday is off and Tuesday is on.

Right?

I can play Tuesday.

I can play Tuesday. Thanks guys.

Impatience

Hey guys I've held out as long as I can, I am going to download the new patch. I have to try out the new features, I can wait no longer. Sorry. I'll keep the savefile from our campaign, maybe we can figure out a way for me to attach it to a post. Although I have a sneaking suspicion that someone already has their own copy of our savegame, which would make it easier. So I am going to finally give in to temptation. You guys can go ahead and finish the campaign without me, and when you guys wrap it up we can start another one with the new patch. Sorry for the inconvenience guys.

Pillage Carthage?

With Shelt out, does everyone want to continue on for a few sessions? See how we fare against an AI-controlled Carthage?

Personally, I wouldn't mind a couple more sessions to see if Pontus can unite the entire Greek world. But then I'm curious about 2.2 too, and would like to start a new campaign with it, particularly if we can find one or two more players.

If we do continue, would I be allowed to switch to Carthage? Armenia's in a dead state, and doesn't have much room for expansion anymore.

I don't mind if you switch to Carthage. I have a copy of the save, but if you guys want me to host, the only way I can get by my router issues is by hosting through Gameranger. Gameranger is a free program that fools your computer into thinking we are connected directly. Not sure how it does it, but it works for Supreme Ruler 2020.
