Can A Shattered World Reunite?
In the 900s a mysterious event happened. All the great empires of Eurasia disappeared, and the old world reverted to tribalism. There is a conspiracy that this is because aliens decided as a prank to teleport out everyone with blue blood. Historians have looked to more prosaic explanations, noting that there had been a general downward trend for hundreds of years before and that the climate was worsening. But convincing theories for the shear extent of this fall are still lacking, perhaps because of the horrible lack of written records from this period. This is generally seen as a catastrophe, though some argue that the decline in state capacity resulted in improved conditions, to which the rejoinder is “those who survived”. Regardless it is generally agreed that by 936 AD there no longer existed any sort of largescale centralized realm west of China.

Hi, I am starting a shattered world game! 936 start since before then there are all the weird CKII cultural evolution ‘choices’ (eg culturally Germanic future Portugal in 836…). Permanent consolidation casus bellis. Every county will be independent with a ruler 20-60 with 2-6 kids. No great conquerors. Most rules historical. Nomadic countries remain that (areas ruled by nomadic realm of its culture apparently though become nomadic even if not, eg Hungary). All others will be tribal. Mod allowing the AI to create their own kingdoms/empires. Anyone is allowed to raid.

I will be in observe mode. An update every ~20 years on who the most important players are. Here are all 10+ county religions at start for informational purposes:
Catholic 384 provinces
Sunni 176
Buddhist 152
Orthodox 154
Tengri 143
Suomenusk 116
Slavic 115
Jain 78
Germanic 75
Miaphysite 62
Hindu 57
African 49
Zoroastrian 38
Bon 31
Shia 31
Romuva 21
Ibadi 20
Nestorian 12
Kharijite 10

956 Update:
I will be covering all realms larger than 5 holdings and duchies with more than 2 counties. On an interesting note, nomad realms get crushed at the start. 250 men just doesn’t cut it. Nomad lands were nearly eliminated west of the Volga River. But then lands reverted on death and nomads have an edge in mushrooming.
1712583121881.png

10/20 of the largest realms in the world are in this screenshot!

The Persian Zoroastrian Chief of Urgench conquered nomad lands around the Aral Sea before dying in 952. So CKII did its thing and made them break free and join the nearest nomad realm. Tugralid only controls 1/6 counties, the rest is held by Aydogan Novogrodekid who is a Turkish Zoroastrian. Aydogan is 29 and in the last 4 years has reduced to tributaries 3 realms. He is cruel and ambitious.

Ubagan is the largest realm in the known world at 13 counties and ruled by Cuman Tengrists. It also has 4 tributaries. The founder Kopti was unremarkable. But his eldest son, Kopti Jr, conquered Merv as an adventurer and expanded it. Kopti Jr was quick and midas touched. He was also a demon-possessed cannibalistic lunatic who died of food poisoning at the age of 34. His ambitious younger brother Itlar, also an adventurer in his younger days, expanded the nomad lands and inherited Merv. Itlar is lovers with his brother’s widow. He is attacking Tugrulid for Syr Darya. He is only 37.

Ilcurid controls six counties. Ilcur was incompetent at everything but stewardship. Despite that he conquered a realm from 943-54, albeit losing two counties to Agutid in 950. They are Karluk Khurmazta. His son inherited months ago. They have 1 tributary.

Agutid also is Karluk Khurmazta with 6 counties. They are currently attacking Ilcurid for another county, but lost last year a war to Oshrusana. They are also Karluk Khurmazta. Agut II was zealous and good at war. He died in 949 and since then his son Agut (yes, CKII mixed up the numbering) inherited. He is a dim hedonist albeit semi-competent in intrigue and warfare.

Buqtirma is unremarkable other than their starting ruler being female. 5/6 counties are actually controlled by Iltughun, a nomad breakaway on tribal death in 953, who then immediately started a conquering spree. Iltughun has one tributary and his liege is sitting in his dungeon. They are Krighiz Tengri.

Belukha covers six counties and is Uyghur Tengrist. Ocen started expansion and Cigshi ‘the Just’ continued it. He has high stewardship and diplomacy.

Zavkhan covers 10 counties and is ruled by Ilterish ‘the Monster’ who is 40 and an Uyghur Tengrist. He steadily expanded a county every year or two and has 1 1-county tributary. He is winning a defensive war against Ikh Bogd which is Manichean. Like any great conqueror he is content, shy, and craven…

Khangai started with Chagatai, but he died in 938. His son Ajinai rapidly expanded the realm despite mediocre stats. Ajinai with his 3 counties defeated Sartaq with his 5 counties, taking all but 1, in 948, jumping him to the big leagues. They are Tengri Mongol and have 1 tributary.

Jingzong Sun inherited Dunhuang Tribe in 938 and then went on an expansion spree as did the other four Han Taoist counts. This completed in 947. In 955 he lost Dunhuang to a peasant revolt and as the rest of the realm was nomad agitation counties, Kumul is a walking corpse, albeit with 5 counties. Of the other four counts, 2 died and were reduced to starting counties. Yangguan will be too, but Yumen’s three counties are all tribal.

Damgyi Mangtsen was a Bodpa Bon who by his death in 948 controlled 4 counties. His daughter Konchog then ruled for four years and then her sister Pongza inherited. She conquered two more counties. She is greedy and ambitious and sympathetic toward eastern religions and also only 33.
1712583136247.png

Baeqaeter Shoana rules over Semender and its 5 counties. He is a Sunni Alan. His father Bazuk unified them by his death in 946. Baeqaeter celebrated his father’s death by getting his widow pregnant within 6 months. Despite his seduction focus, that is his only known bastard.

Pecheneg Tengri Oleshye was one of the few nomad realms west of the Volga to never fall to tribal forces. Teber ‘the cruel’ however failed to expand it beyond its initial county before his death in 941. His son Suru ‘Son of Komur Han’ however expanded Oleshye to its current 6 counties. He died in 951 and his brother Tatus inherited as all five of his sons were underage.

Carinthia is perhaps the youngest realm. Created four years ago by Araslan ‘the Conquerer’, a Khazar Tengri adventurer and elevated to a duchy 2 years ago. He is the second-best general in the known world. He rules four counties and is winning a war for a fifth. His father was a Khan back near the Don River. His lunatic older brother defeated and executed his liege and then lost 2/3 counties to neighbors.

Alexandria is ruled by 79-year-old Ounisht Shanouda. He is Coptic Miaphysite. He rules 6 counties accumulated at the expense of the Muslims, though his last expansion was 6 years ago. He is as dumb as a rock. His best stat is 6 intrigue.

Yaghmurasen Benghazi rules 3 counties as duke. He is a Berber Qarmatian who gained power in a peasant revolt in 948 then added two counties in the mid-950s. He is zealous, but just, with high martial.

Biska initially was ruled by Aghali, an Ibadi Berber holy warrior. He added two counties before his death in 948. His son Amin ‘the Just’ is dull but ambitious and hopes to become the King of Africa. He has added two more counties. Currently he has no dynastic heirs as 3 brothers and 3 nephews have all died, but he’s only 26 so not desperate yet.
1712583151116.png

Shakay of Galich Mersky conquered his county as a claimant, probably by the disgruntled elders event. He controls four counties now and built a temple. He is Mordvian Suomenusko and is 50 years old, tall, ambitious, envious, and greedy.

Sampo Suensaari, Duke of Karelia, controls 5 counties. He similarly gained Olonets as a claimant and then expanded, becoming duke just this year. He is proud and ambitious and envious and comely. He however is also depressed. He is Finnish Suomenusko

Refil Knytling is another adventurer-claimant from 941. He first consolidated an area around his capital by 949 and is now expanding in Estonia, ruling 6 counties. He is ambitious and zealous and also weak and sickly and 56 so probably not long for this world. He is Norse Germanic as are the next three.

Anlaufer af Raumsdalr of Akershus conquered a second county a year before his death. His son Alfgeir succeeded. He expanded to six counties by 949 including Ostfriesland. He is content and hasn’t expanded since but wants to be King of Norway.

Birgir Hylling inherited Rogaland when his father died a natural death 13 days into the game. He is bright, good at intrigue and diplomacy. He is 50 years old, but still sniping a county every few years. He has 8 to his name…

Gudfrid af Hvamm of Scania is 61 and an ambitious coward. He rules five counties and controls the mouth of the Elbe River. One of his sons conquered Fyn and lost it to Sjaelland 15 months later.
1712583162563.png
1712583165924.png
1712583168365.png

Farbas Sima Cisse of Timbuktu is another adventurer, gaining a county in 942, then becoming Duke in 943. He is Soninke African but sympathetic to Islam. He is ambitious but dim and stressed and depressed with diplomacy the only thing he is semi-decent at.

Sisay of Aksum conquered a second county before his death in 942. Terefe inherited from his father and conquered four more counties in holy wars from the Muslims and Jews. He is Ethiopian Miaphysite. He is cruel and arbitrary but a game master. Mysteriously his brother and his entire family died in a boating accident…

Arjunpala Kalinjarid of Kalanjara gained power in a peasant revolt in 943. He then expanded to five counties. He is a Hindustani Buddhist. He is ambitious and zealous with a theology focus.

I'll subscribe. This looks fun.

Are you in observer mode?

How long will it take for the first kingdoms and empires to form? Do any kingdoms exist yet?

977 Update:
@HistoryDude Yes, I am in observer mode. No kingdoms yet even at this point other than nomadic realms. But several are getting pretty close.
1713134163407.png

I will be covering all realms with 10+ holdings and duchies with >6.

Tugralid is ruled by the same guy as it has been for the past 40 years, who is now 73 years old. It is the largest realm in the known world. But 15/18 counties are ruled by Aydogan ‘the Despoiler’ Novogrodekid. Aydogan has picked up another tributary and conquered vast lands around the southern Ural Mountains.

Khangai is now #2 with 4 tributaries. Ajinai has gotten smarter, but not to the extent of being talented. He is a lustful hedonist with 9 living children.

Belukha has expanded from 6 to 15 counties. Cigshi died in 962 and Bumin ‘the Just’ inherited. Bumin is ambitious and good at war, but increasingly his also ambitious vassal and rival Tapa ‘the Tenacious’ is the mover and shaker.

Agutid has doubled to 12 counties. Agut’s son Cecem ‘the Noble’ inherited in 958. He was ambitious with 28 martial and conquered broad lands north of Lake Balkhash in the following 3 years before resting on his laurels. His son Yigencur is decent at war, but was reduced to a tributary by Ubagan.

Ubagan was inherited by Borc ‘the Cruel’ in 965. He lost the Merv lands to the Balids in 973. Only two tributaries. He is rivals with his most powerful Khan who also has a claim on his throne. He is winning a defensive war with Yugra which has captured his family.

Ilcurid has been ruled by Manlik ‘the Accursed’ since 956. The name is presumably a result of him killing his last brother in 960. His stats are pretty bad but he’s managed to expand the realm.

Bolghar is Sunni and rules 11 counties, all with nomad agitation. Taridin founded the dynasty. He was a genius. Such a genius he was overthrown by a Mordvian after 3 years. He did recapture Qazan in 950. His genius son Zenti inherited and added 2 counties before dying of the flu in 958 at age 27. Then Hubdad inherited. Stupid one of the family, but he did go on an expansion spree ending in 965.

The Balids were founded by Parviz ‘the Evil’ in 947 in a Khurmazta Persian revolt. He ruled 4 counties by his death in 971. His tall, shrewd, brave son Shayan, brilliant at diplomacy inherited and celebrated by attacking Ubagan and gaining Merv. He is currently losing a holy war for a county.

Cilbu ‘the Conquerer’ is the Cuman Tengri ruler of Yugra. His father was a 1-county nomad. Cilbu conquered Ural in 952 and expanded over the following 15 years to 8 counties. He is a genius and a lunatic. Chaste with no kids and three concubines.

Belukha covers six counties and is Uyghur Tengrist. Ocen started expansion and Cigshi ‘the Just’ continued it. He has high stewardship and diplomacy.
1713134265113.png

Carinthia has continued to flourish under its Khazar rulers. Araslan ‘the Conquerer’ died in 961 having expanded it to roughly its currently 14-county size. Carinthia uses elective gavelkind and his nephew Cat’n ‘the Wolf’ inherited rather than his son who became a count and was eventually murdered but not before having a son of his own. Cat’n died of dysentery in 973 and his brother Papacyz inherited. Papacyz is brilliant at war and a depressed drunkard. He has seven sons, but his nephew is heir, which seems like a stable situation. About half the vassals are German chiefs.

Hadik is Hungarian Tengri and formed in 950 as a nomadic breakaway on tribal death. It gained more territory this way. Denes ‘the Despoiler’ didn’t do much, nor his son Gyula. Csak, the other son inherited in 971 and started expansion despite being content. He is shrewd with 25 martial. He rules 11 counties.

Samarra was founded as a revolt by Assyrian Chaldean Enosh Bukhtishu in 963. He is zealous, ambitious, and cruel. He became the first tribal ruler to convert to feudalism. His realm has 4 counties and 12 holdings. But the shift went as well as it usually does in CKII and 3 neighbors are attacking him.

Yagmurasen Benghazi died in 973 without sons so Haidar Fahdid inherited. He resumed expansion, which Benghazi had stopped after 960. He is lustful, greedy, and cynical.

Onisht of Alexandria died at age 80. One of his daughters inherited, then the other. Now his non-dynastic granddaughter rules. Anthe made herself High Chiefess of Paraetonium, but otherwise hasn’t done much, though stewardship is her strength.

Armeniacon was founded by a Greek Iconoclast revolt in 953. Boethios conquered two more counties before his death in 959. He only a daughter and Armeniacon used agnatic elective gavelkind, so a courtier named Thomas inherited. He ruled until 968, added two more counties before dying with only a daughter. So Hektorios inherited. He has added two counties. I’m sure you can guess the gender of his only child…

Derbent was founded in 963 by a religious revolt by Iconoclast Alans. Devit Halani has continued to expand his realm and controls 7 counties, 3 with nomad agitation. He has a theology focus and is a malnourished scholar.

The High Chiefdom of Toulouse has its origins in Barcelona. The starting ruler was Wifredo d’Oriola, a Visigothic Catholic. He didn’t amount to much. However, by 952, his daughter Flamula inherited at age 16 after outliving 5 adult older siblings. She conquered Tarragona in 954. Then Narbonne in 959. She conquered four more counties by 967. She has since rested on her laurels other than creating the duchy. She is in a regular marriage with an Italian vassal. She is strong, but rather ugly. She is homosexual, zealous, and chaste. She is currently handling a Waldensian revolt. She has 23 diplomacy, other stats are unimpressive.
1713134242608.png

Sudislav Petrilov conquered Pskov as a claimant in 949. He died in 951 and one of his twin sons, Putiata inherited (the other Putiata eliminated). Putiatia conquered a county every few years, upgraded himself to High Chief in 966. He rules 10 counties. He has 27 intrigue and is deceitful, cynical, cruel, and paranoid. He is Russian Slavic.

Birgir Hylling of Rogaland crowned himself High Chief of Vestlandet in 959. His son Holvi ruled from 963-9, then his nephew inherited. In the last 20 years they have gained one county. Oysteinn is attractive and strong, but neither nice nor smart and he has great pox. He does have three female friends though.

Solvi ‘the Conqueror’ is the grandson of a Norse count. He conquered Northumberland as an adventurer in 969. Three years later he made himself Duke of Lothian. He now rules 13 counties, most in Scotland, and is just 30 years old. He is ambitious and zealous and plans to become King of Scotland. He is waging war to conquer Glamorgan in Wales.

Dublin at game start was ruled by Norse Germanic Sverker Lambi. He died in 949 and his son Arni inherited, only for another son, Bo, to conquer Dublin as a claimant in 960. Bo went on an expansion spree and upgraded himself to the High Chiefdom of Leinster in 963. He rules 7 counties. He is demon-possessed, content, and homosexual. His stats are pretty bad.
1713134228967.png

Gurma has its roots in the conquest of the county of Songhay by claimant Igoumou Askiya in 940. He conquered another county in 948 and then one in 952 and so on. In 964 he declared himself High Chief of Gurma. By his death in 975 at the age of 72 he controlled 6 counties and 1 temple. His 10-year-old only son Birma inherited.

Terefe of Aksum became known as ‘the Cruel’. Hew was cruel and ambitious and kept expanding his realm, creating the duchy of Semien in 964. His youngest son inherited in 975 as the oldest died of a heart attack at 7, the 2nd became grandmaster of the Order of Saint Anthony, and the 3rd was murdered by Terefe at the age of 10. Afework ‘the Bewitched’ is good-looking, well-groomed, ambitious, and kind. Also demon-possessed. His stats are decent except unlike his father he’s terrible at intrigue. He rules 9 counties.
1713134213877.png

Arjunpala Kalinjarid died in 964, leaving his lands to his 4-year-old daughter. She has just reached age and created a duchy. She rules 7 counties. She is pretty mediocre in terms of stats.

Damodar Sherid conquered Purushapura as a claimant in 957. Then starting in 964 he expanded, becoming a Raj in 970. He is ambitious, cruel, but just. Good at everything except diplomacy. He is 66. His wife is 35 and owns 3 counties in Bengal. They have 7 kids together.

That High Chieftess of Tolouse looks like an interesting character. How large will her realm become? Will her descendants expand its reach if she refuses to?

Lothian looks like it has a good chance of forming Scotland. Maybe they'll be the first kingdom?

I look forward to seeing how Samarra does...

@HistoryDude Toulouse doesn't really expand more. Lothian does but doesn't become a Kingdom, however four kingdoms *do* form. Samarra is long-gone...
1000 A.D. Update:
1713737002704.png

Mongol Tengri Khangai has 18 holdings. Bujeg ‘the Just’ has ruled since 984. He has 2 tributaries and is plotting to revoke a county from the more powerful of his two khans.

Uyghur Tengri Tapa ‘the Tenacious’ Tutuqid broke free of his rival/liege Belukha. His son Tutuq ‘the Feeble’ now rules. He is scholarly and learned. He also inherited in 989 by murdering his father. He also had one of his sisters sacrificed to the gods. To be fair Tapa wasn’t a bleeding heart either, sacrificing a brother and a step-mom.

Uyghur Buddhist Charkliq has been around since game start. But not until Istami ‘the Frog’ inherited in 969 did it expend beyond 2 counties. He is a bit dim-witted, best stat is 11 martial. In 973 an uprising defected to him. He then conquered the nomadic realm of Ulungar in 981. He defeated both Karluk realms.

Karluk Khurmatza Ilcurid expanded north until a duchy was ripped off by Charkliq in 991. Manlik ‘the Accursed’ was killed in combat by a vassal in 986. His son Sucug ‘the Evil’ is an idiot. He is also a homosexual with 3 concubines and five sons. He did take a county from Agutid. Agutid was inherited by a Karluk Tengri despite an adult Agutid existing and has otherwise not done much.

The Balids died out, but the, also Persian Khurmazta, Warshasids inherited Merv. Ardeshir is 17 and good at war, but it looks like they are going to lose to a Zoroastrian revolt.

Turkish Zoroastrian Novogrodekid inherited the Tugralid Khaganate in 979, but not really expanded any more. Toktamis ‘the Butcher’ inherited in 984. His stats are poor and he is currently losing two wars.

Khazar Tengri Kisa ‘the Eastern Wind’ of Itil started with four counties in 965. He then expanded through inheritance from tribal realms and conquest, until in 992 he siezed the vast Bolghar lands. He didn’t have any adult sons, so a vassal, Itakh, inherited. Itakh is good at war and stewardship.
1713737014186.png

Hektorios ‘the Bold’ of Armeniacon managed to change the laws so females could inherit. Eustathia inherited in 986 at the age of 14. She is currently winning against a holy war. She is on her fifth husband and has no children and is chaste.

There had been a Persian Zoroastrian duchy in Gilan since 954. Nawid ‘the Affable’ Kavoosid inherited in 980. His brother Khodadad ‘the Tenacious’ inherited in 987 and then started an expansion spree. Khodadad is an ugly homosexual, but also brawny and good at war.

Abdul-Azeem Nasrid is a Levantine Sunni who inherited 2 counties in 988. He expanded that to 7 counties through a combination of holy and regular wars. He controls 14 holdings though as a couple counties have a temple and 2 counties were feudal before he captured them.

Csak ‘the Despoiler’ created the Kingdom of Hungary and settled down as a tribal ruler in 990. By this time he already largely controlled its de jure lands and a powerful vassal had conquered Moravia. He died the following year and then his son died in 993. Csak II has been ruling since he was 2. His stats aren’t bad for his age, but he is dim. During his regency, the last Hungarian nomadic realm, Hunyadi, was eliminated.

Moesia was founded by a Bulgarian Paulician revolt in 966. It then stagnated until Viseslav ‘the Whisperer’ Karvuna inherited in 983. Incidentally his father was also a peasant rebel, but dating back to 946 and then becoming a Moesian vassal. Viseslav expanded Moesia across much of greater Bulgaria over the following decade. His 10-year-old nephew/heir was murdered in 992, then he himself was in 993 by his younger brother Soimir II. Soimir is shrewd, sturdy, and bright. He is also kind.

Dioclea was founded by a Serbian Barlaamite revolt in 955. Nikola didn’t do much other than conquer Foggia in Italy before his death in 983. His son Radoslav ‘the Unready’ however has been much more active, conquering 6 counties in Croatia. He is a seducer, but his wife can’t help but like her burly, comely, kind, gregarious, and charitable husband.

Carinthia is still ruled by Khazar Tengri Papacyz ‘the Drunkard’. He is an infirm, possessed, drunkard with 25 martial. His heir is his oldest *legitimate* son Buzer who inherited 2 counties from a cousin who died in a duel and then conquered 5 counties in Italy. Papcyz has also expanded into Croatia.

His oldest son is Tyrach ‘the Conquerer’ of Achaia who is Pecheneg like his mother. He conquered Achaia as an adventurer in 989 and has since slowly expanded and feudalized. He is burly, brawny, and ambitious with 24 martial.
1713737047751.png

Flamula ‘the Good’ of Toulouse died in 985. Her son Callisto ‘the Cruel’ inherited. He established feudalism. And got overthrown by his younger sister Agalina in 998. She has medicore stats and is culturally Italian like her father. All the neighbors are jumping on her (CKII does *not* handle the transition from tribal to feudal well at all).

In 977, a Cuman adventurer named Uzluk conquered Ryazan. He elevated himself to high chief in 979. By his death in 991 he had conquered a large realm. He had no sons though. Koshel Vechkasid inherited. He had been a Meshchera chief from 958-77, then it was conquered, became a Ryazan courtier. He is now Tengri. He is great at diplomacy and stewardship and generally a nice person.

In Pskov, Putiata was killed in battle in 986. His son Sudislav ‘the Ill-Ruler’ inherited. He is kind of dim, but did add a few counties to the family collection. He is friends with his brother.

Karelia has slowly expanded. Sampo died in 970, his son Vesa inherited and subjugated a count. He died in 990 and his 5-year-old daughter Ilmatur inherited. She is dim but shows some potential in intrigue.

Oysteinn of Vestlandet did nothing noteworthy. His brother Anundr though conquered the High Chief of Agder in 978. Their cousin Ottarr ‘the Hideous’ inherited Agder in 981, Vestlandet in 982, and conquered Nidaros in 982 and made it his capital. He crowned himself King of Norway, the first king in the known world, in 985. He then has expanded into Sweden, most notably subjugating the 7X chiefs of Dal. He is currently fighting a war in Iceland. He is good at war, popular with his vassals, zealous. But he is 53 with a 6-year-old son as heir.

West Frisia was formed in 977 by a Norse Germanic adventurer named Refil ‘the Conqueror’. By his death in 997, he ruled lands from Scania to Rouen. His son Sturla is zealous and shrewd. Not that the former prevented him cheating on his beautiful wife. He is fighting a war for Eu.

Solvi ‘the Conqueror’ still rules in Lothian. He is up to 24 counties, but hasn’t conquered any more lands in a dozen years.

In Ireland, Bo died in 986 and his nephew Sverker inherited. Sverker was murdered the next year by his brother Bersi ‘the Tormentor’. Bersi went on a conquering spree and formed Ireland in 988. He has had 9 children born in the last 8 years. He has 33 martial and is a cruel but attractive berserker. He is so cruel he is friends with 2 of his concubines and has never killed anyone besides his brother…

There is a third Norse Germanic realm now in the British Isles. Egill ‘the Conqueror’ conquered Buchan as an adventurer in 981. In 983 he created the duchy of Albany. His son Sigurdr inherited in 990. But another adventurer, Eskild, conquered Albany in 992. By this time, Ulster and North Wales had been added. Eskild has not added anything more. He is ambitious, tall, and burly, but also a bit mentally slow. He is defending against a subjugation war by Ireland.
1713737069844.png

Afework ‘the Bewitched’ declared himself King of Abyssinia in 986. A bunch of independent Ethiopian realms then swore fealty. He also overran Berbera. In 997, he was murdered by his eldest son Mekonnen. The realm was elective Gavelkind, so the kingdom went to his 11-year-old third son Geteye instead who is well-groomed and brawny. Mekonnen is independent ruler of Berbera.
Kanem was created in 977 by Oki ‘Son of the Dark Spirits’ a Zaghawa African. Oki’s father was one of the game start chiefs. Oki was killed by a wild beast in 995 and his infant son inherited. Adam is a haughty 4-year-old.

Bedouin Sunni Muhammad ‘the Holy’ inherited the chiefdoms of Jeddah and Medina in 975. He conquered a foothold in Africa a few years later. His leap to the big leagues was when he conquered the High Chiefdom of Al-Bahrain in 992. Al-Bahrain was Shia and created only four years earlier, He is a zealous, cruel genius. Good at everything except diplomacy.
1713737076927.png

Persian Sunni Sadri was founded by Faramarz in 975, though as a mere chiefdom it dated back to 936. He died in 980 and his 1-year-old son Esfandiar inherited. Esfandiar has mediocre stats, but is ambitious and has started an expansion spree, currently being in a holy war for Sistan.

Brahmapalid traces back to a Hindustani Buddhist peasant rebel in 938. By 960 he had conquered 5 more counties. He died in 976 and Jagdeva inherited. Jagdeva further expanded and in 980 upgraded to High Chief. He was murdered by one of his sisters in 991 and a different one inherited. Anantadevi is a zealous, drunken lunatic. The realm has continued to slowly expand.

Nandurbar was one county until Ranojirao Guhalid conquered 6 more in April 997. He was good at war but proud and cruel. In July his sister Shudhamati challenged him to a duel, and he slew her. 3 days later his wife got pregnant. But shortly after their son’s first birthday, she murdered him. You see, his wife was his niece, aka the child of the sister he killed... She is now regent for little Ranojirao Jr.

Telugu Hindu Devanayaka ‘the Evil’ in 977 inherited a county his father conquered in 961. He inherited 2 more in 982 from the main branch of the family. He then declared himself a Raja. He steadily expanded the realm before dying of cancer in 998. His son Singamanayaka was immediately piled on and faces 3 county wars, a subjugation war, and a peasant revolt.

Bodpa Bon Nyang Khadrobum inherited Monyul from her father in 952. By 966 she had conquered herself broad lands and then rested on her laurels. She then created Para-Lauhitya in 994. She is ambitious and strong, but by far her best skill is learning. She is now a youthful 76.

Hungary and Abyssinia formed? Nice.

Will this new Zoroastrian realm manage to conquer Persia?

What realm did Moesia initially revolt against?

Non-noble revolts are doing surprisingly well...

What culture is Armeniacon again?

Why is the King of Abyssinia called "the Bewitched"?

Call this a spoiler I suppose, but this happened! Don't think I've seen an AI realm be piled on and torn apart so viciously. In 1011 Carinthia lost a war with Verona. 10 years later a realm with 2 dozen counties was gone...As you can see, a *lot* of neighbors contributed their small part to this. Would not have expected it as seemed very robust, expansionist realm, good bench of talent, one of largest in the world. Funnily the Achaian branch of the family collapsed simultaneously.

@HistoryDude Moesia just formed of revolt of some random county. Revolts are very powerful in shattered world as so many small realms unable to crush them. The event troops they get to keep also mean they often expand afterward. Armeniacon is Greek. King of Abyssinia is demon-possessed, thus 'the Bewitched'.

1025 A.D. Update:
1714347956381.png

Khangai has only added one county. Bujeg died in 1015 and his son Kokochu now rules. Kokochu has reduced Dunkheger and Ikh Bogd to tributaries. He is cruel, chaste, and fat. Not very exciting to talk about, but in the real world (not CKII!), steady competent realms are the best.

Charkliq saw the death of Istami in 1002. His son however was passed over for inheritance and responded by declaring independence as the Bilge Khaganate. Buqa ‘the Despoiler’ was good at war, but not very aggressive and let this go. His nephew Kurebir inherited in 1020, then 4 years later nephew Bilga. Bilga has been more expansionist, though his stats are pretty medicore. He is very much a lady’s man though!

Saka Buddhist Purgula Yuttina became chief of Khotan at the age of 6 in 973. He conquered counties in 990 and 996. Then a pause until 1005 then 5 more counties by 1014 when he declared himself High Chief of Pamir. He died in 1018. His brother Bahudiva ruled until 924 then nephew Vidaram inherited. Vidaram is slow and only good at learning. He is fighting two wars, should win both. 4 of his vassals are cousins.

For the Varshasids, Ardeshir by his death in 1011 was known as ‘the Ill-ruler’. Then his brother Khodadad ‘of the Empty Pockets’ inherited, then his son Bahman in 1024. No territory lost, though Bahman might be about to change that. He decided when already in debt is the best time to holy war his strongest neighbor, Shahbazid. Khiva and Bukhara decided to take advantage and declare a holy war on him.

Novogrodekid decided to die out in the male line in 1007 and then rapidly fell apart. Technically the Tugrulids regained the Khaganate, all 3 counties. Their ruler is brilliant and ambitious, which is another way of saying he keeps attacking and losing to his neighbors.

Itakh ‘the Wolf’ of Itil was murdered by his brother Tabir ‘the Scourge of Zarvana’ in 1007. Tabir expanded Itil toward the Ural Mountains. He died in 1021 and Khatir ‘the Evil’ inherited. Khatir is content and fat, but brilliant at war and expanded Itil further at Turkish and Pecheneg expense.
1714347978450.png

Khodadad ‘the Tenachious’ Kavoosid died in 1015. In his later years he expanded significantly toward the Persian Gulf. His eldest son Esfandiar inherited Gilan and son Hormoz inherited Azerbaijan. Both are ambitious, Esfandiar is a genius. He is facing a Sunni revolt and a holy war.

Paphlagonia has a history eerily like its twin Trebizond. Formed by an Iconoclast revolt in 968, the first three rulers failed to produce male heirs. It slowly expanded. Then in 1001, the grandson of a chief, Konstas Kinnamos, inherited. He didn’t do much before his death in 1011. But his first cousin once removed, Porphyrios inherited. He was a genius and expanded Paphlagonia into Greece, taking advantage of the collapse of Khazar Achaia, before his death by Measles in 1021. His infant son Philippos inherited.

Soimir of Moesia died in 1004 and his lands were split between his sons Jerolim ‘the Evil’ and Vukac. The latter died in 1011 reunifying things. Then Jerolim died in turn in 1020 and his 4-year-old son inherited. Bulgaria added 8 counties over the last 25 years, scattered along its borders. Most dramatically it gained Vidin in 920 from Hungary in a titanic war (by now Hungary can raise 15k men, Bulgaria a bit more).

Csak II is now known as ‘the Depraved’. Hungary has gained a few random counties, but most importantly subjugated Peremyshl, who has continued to expand and were promoted to High Chiefs of Ungvar. Csak is currently attacking Oltenia.

Radoslav ‘the Unready’ of Dioclea died in 1003 and his son Nikola II inherited. He took advantage of the collapse of Carinthia to gain western Croatia. He then died in 1021 and his son Nenad inherited Croatia while his brother Branimir inherited Dioclea. Branimir is dull, but strong, and a drunkard. Also wounded for unclear reasons.

In 979, a man named Pagano Ordelaffo, an Italian Fraticelli, lead a peasant revolt for Florence. By his death in 994 he ruled 3 counties. His son Ausilio inherited 2 of them and conquered Modena in 995. Then in 1011 he defeated Carinthia in a war for Verona and crowned himself High Chief of Verona. This started a Carinthian death spiral. He conquered Friuli in 1015 and then a vassal conquered Carinthia in 1021. He’s added a few counties in recent years. Ausilio is 44 and wants to become King of Italy. He is ambitious but dull and fat. His son, chief of Bologna is heir.

In 1002, a Italian Fraticelli named Enzo ‘the Repulsive’ conquered the county of Milan. By 1013 he ruled 3 counties. He took advantage of Carinthia’s decline to size three counties from them and then in 1014 declared himself High Chief of Milan. He then slowly expanded west. He is an interesting person. Enzo is celibate with no wife or kids but struggles with lust. He is craven and paranoid. He is malnourished and has high martial and learning stats and is terrible at everything else.

French Catholic Evrard ‘the Unchaste’ Carpenel inherited Vendome from his father in 952. He would occasionally conquer a county and left four to his son Eudes ‘the Just’ in 995. He also killed his brother in a duel in 975. Eudes continued expanding and made himself High Chief of Anjou in 1006. He is a master seducer with Lovers Pox. He is strong and shrewd and great at war and intrigue.
1714347996484.png

Koshel of Ryazan died in 1010 and his son Surt ‘the Terrible’ inherited. Surt is a syphilitic lunatic. Ryazan has barely expanded in decades.

In Pskov, Sudislav ‘the Ill-Ruler’ was fell in battle against his vassal the Chief of Narke in 1007 just like his father had 20 years earlier. His son Putiata II inherited. Then the Polish chief of Kalisz seized Pskov in 1014 before dying of great pox. Putiata then challenged the son to a duel, regaining Pskov in 1017. Before in 1021 being killed in combat by the Norse. His uncle Vladislav ‘the Legless’ inherited. 5 out of the 6 rulers Pskov has had have fallen in combat, and Vladislav was lucky not to be a sixth. He is a dull lunatic though funnily diplomacy is the only thing he is semi-competent at. During all this fun, several counties were lost to Norway.

Ottarr of Norway fell in combat against Lothian in 1007 and his grandson Ottarr II ‘the Just’ inherited. But he only ruled 5 years before being killed by his younger sister in a duel. His uncle Sigtrygg, funnily enough a few years younger, inherited. Norway hasn’t done much. Karelia was subjugated and cleanup is occurring in Sweden.

Pomeranian Slavic Karel Zirzipani inherited Slupsk in 965. He expanded and became High Chief of Pomeralia in 981. He died the next year and his son Karel II ‘the One-Eyed’ inherited. He significantly expanded the realm. Most importantly subjugating Norse Smaland in 1001. His brother Miroslaw ‘the Mead Master’ inherited in 1005 and then his son Szymon in 1014. He subjugated Skalovia.

Sturla of West Frisia became known as ‘the Tyrant’ and fell fighting his vassals. Before that though he conquered a bunch of lands in Brittany and Aquitaine. A vassal named Sorkver inherited and is now also attacking the Bretons.

Solvi ‘the Conqueror’ of Lothian died in 1002. His son Budli inherited, before being killed in combat by Norse Pembroke in 1004. His cousin Haroldr then had a boring reign before being being killed in Wales in 1024. The dynasty at that point was out of men, thanks in part to no less than 6 Vodr men dying of Great Pox. A courtier named Erik Rakki inherited. Pembroke is trying to subjugate him.

In Ireland Bersi ‘the Tormentor’ died right after the last update. His son Arni ‘the Tormentor’ inherited. A subjugation war against Albany failed, but then Albany spiraled apart and he conquered Ulster and footholds in Scotland. Arni died in 1022 of combat wounds. His 4-year-old son Bo inherited. Bo was murdered in 1025 by his uncle Sigbjorn ‘the Just’ who inherited.

The Dutch Catholic de Grimmingen family had ruled Brabant since 936. In 971 Waelram ‘the Bold’ inherited. He did nothing much and was eventually overthrown by his cousin Pieter in 990. Pieter conquered Hainaut in 994. He was a eunuch though so died without sons in 999. Waelram then inherited. But this reign was very different. He made himself High Chief of Brabant and steadily expanded. He was celibate and failed to leave heirs on his death in 1020. So a courtier named Clauwaert inherited. He crowned himself King of Lotharingia in 1022. He is in hiding because of paranoia someone wants to kill him.
1714348022125.png

Geteye still rules in Abyssinia. Over the course of his life he has conquered much of Nubia and inherited Berbera. He is great at war and zealous, but terrible at everything else. He is currently plotting to murder one of his dukes. Muhammadid is holy warring him for Blemmyria and Mubarakid is for Afar and both look likely to win.

Muhammad ‘the Holy’ died in 1008 and his son Sadiq ‘the Brute’ inherited. He conquered a county in Nubia, gained Mecca and gained lands in Oman. He gained his nickname from his strength, as in other respects he is no brute, being quick and possessing four of the seven virtues. He is good at war, diplomacy, and intrigue.

The Bedouin Sunni Mubarakids were originally from Medina. However one of them named Aram inherited Taizz in 974. He expanded by holy wars and became High Chief of Sanaa in 988. He had no sons so his cousin Sami inherited in 996. Sami was also an expansionist holy warrior becoming a triple High Chief. He died in 922 and his son Mahmud inherited.
1714348033252.png

Afghan Buddhist Nouman inherited the Counties of Ghazi in 992 and Kabul in 995. He conquered Purushapura in 1006. He won a holy war for the rest of the duchy of Ghazi in 1009 and rest of Kabul in 1020. He then converted to feudalism. He is currently helping Skadu attack Pamir.

Sindhi Hindu Bhungar Debulid conquered Debul as a peasant rebel in 955. By his death in 974 he had expanded his realm to five counties. His son Sanghar added little but did make himself Raja in 992. He died in 998 and his son Bhungar inherited. He was more expansionist but now is losing two holy wars against him. He is dim and brawny.

Hindustani Buddhist Sallaksanavarman inherited a county in 983 and conquered another in 990, enough to make himself a Raja. He then rested on his laurels as did his son Sohanpal ‘the Traitor’. His son Prithvipal inherited in 1024 and had a different philosophy. He immediately declared a war to subjugate the far larger Brahmapalid and won the following year.

The Fraticelli look to be doing well... what's with all these successful peasant revolts? Is that a symptom of the smaller realms?

The Balkans and Anatolia are always interesting in this AAR.

Ambition is nothing except shame if you cannot back it up. Poor Tugrulids.

Wonderful look at a disjointed world beginning to merge into bigger realms. It seems stats matter little in what a ruler accomplished. Can you give a rough estimate of what you value as bad, average, and good? Thanks

1050 A.D. Update:
@HistoryDude Yes, the smaller realms mean that successful revolts, particularly religious ones, are more common and then they use their event troops to expand.

@Midnite Duke If I say good, that means a given stat is somewhere over 15, usually 20 or a bit more. Bad is less than 8 for a specific stat, often literally 0 for some of these people, under 25 points across all stats with no real strength. Average is someone who averages in ballpark of 10 or a bit worse over their stats.
1714948129189.png

Uyghur Buddhist Dunkheger dates back to 936. It reached 3 counties and then stagnated at that size south of the Altai Mountains. Then shrewd Kulug ‘the Bear’ inherited in 1003. He benefited from nomad lands breaking away on the death of Han rulers. His son Eregje ‘the Wise’ inherited in 1016. He has 23 martial and the trait siege leader. Expansion has continued under him, most notably a defeat of Charkliq in 1029. Khangai had a succession crisis in 1048 and many vassals broke away. Eregje took the opportunity to not be a tributary.

Uughur Buddhist Senramid broke away from Charkliq. The clan became landed in 981 under Senram ‘the Unready’. His son Asuq ‘the Just’ inherited in 1007 and started expanding against the Karluks. Asuq was a genius at war and a duelist. Skills he turned against his liege. Bilga of Charkliq was killed in combat by Asuq who gained independence. Asuq rested on his laurels later in life before dying in 1049. Senram II now rules and is pretty medicore. He’s busy defending his tributary Tolesid (Agutid successor) against Ilcurid. Good to know the eternal hate of the Karluks against other Karluks continues.

Khanty Suomenusko Yugra is ruled by Azeg II ‘Sharp Tongue’ Sektevid. Cuman rule survived Cilbu’s death in 984 by only a year before his son was overthrown by a vassal. But Azeg I only reigned for 10 years before being overthrown by Mosheg Lysko. But neither of his sons had kids, so it went back to Azeg II, son of Azeg II in 1016. He didn’t do much for most of his reign, but conquered some land in 1047 and created a second duchy. There are still Cuman vassals including a grandson of Cilbu.

Han Taoist Liu Jiu ‘the Scholar’ conquered Dunhuang in 1029 as part of religious revolt. He then went on an expansion spree, being High Chief of Jiuquan with 5 counties by his death in 1035. He had no heirs, so a vassal inherited. Gu Chengsi further expanded the realm before his death in 1044. His brother Shuji inherited but died in 1047. So a courtier named Wang Rangneng now rules. He is learned, diplomatic, and ambitious, but also a cruel seducer.

Bodpa Buddhist Uttaranchal was created by peasant rebel Tsangma ‘the Pious’ in 1017. He died in 1021 and his son Trimang ‘the Just’ inherited before being murdered by his brother Pode. Pode started an expansion spree in the upper reaches of the Indus, defeating Pamir. He died in 1038 and his infant son inherited before being murdered in 1045 by the wife of a courtier. That courtier, named Gunggyal Hungrel inherited. He conquered a bit more and is now defending in two wars.

The Zoroastrian Persian Jahangirids had ruled Merv since 936. In 1006 Bahram ‘the Priest-Hater’ conquered a second county. His daughter Ghoncheh ‘the Just’ inherited in 1011 after he fell in combat against the wife of a neighboring ruler. She defeated the Varshasids in a holy war for Merv in 1026. She then followed that with further campaigns and by 1031 they were no more. Meanwhile her sister pressed a claim inherited through her mother on Herat in 1023 before dying in 1037 and Ghoncheh inherited. Choncheh defeated Ubagan in 1044 taking two of their Persian counties. She is fighting an offensive war now. She is tall, attractive, and shrewd and a poet. Generally a very nice, outgoing person though a bit of a coward. She married a nomad so her son and heir is Uyghur Tengri.

Khatir ‘the Evil’ of Itil died in 1029 and his nephew Buzar II inherited. A bunch of lands broke off, most notably Bukhal, though some were later recaptured. He is winning a defensive war against Pskov. He is a short, clubfooted homosexual without a good trait to his name other then being an Erudite.
1714948137032.png

Kurdish Sunni Zahak ‘the Tormentor’ launched a successful religious peasant revolt against Kavoosid in 1027, gaining 6 counties. He is a zealous Ash’ari and is cruel, paranoid, arbitrary, and proud. Good at war and intrigue, nothing else. He relentlessly was on the warpath with the most notable conquest being of Azerbaijan from the Kavoosids in 1040 (the two branches unified in 1038).

Eustathia of Armeniacon died in 1016 and her son Hektorios II ‘the Blessed’ inherited. Over the course of his reign he added a few counties, including a Crimean foothold. He died without heirs so courtier Bardas Maniakis inherited in 1042. He has been aggressively expansionist. A holy war for Tao in 1044, one for Mesopotamia in 1046, then in 1049 defeated the Pechenegs to expand the Crimean lands. He can raise 15000 men.

Little Soimir III of Moesia found himself murdered by Braslav Shishman, a powerful vassal, in 1029. Braslav then launched a series of holy wars in all directions and crowned himself King of Bulgaria in 1040. His cousin Sermon inherited before dying fighting a vassal. Then it went back to Braslav’s brother Svetislav ‘the Hunter’ in 1045. Svetislav is strong, attractive, but pretty medicore. He is celibate, though he first had 8 children, all daughters except one son who died in infancy.

Branimir of Dioclea died without doing anything of note in 1037. It then passed to Nenad’s younger brother Aldimir who conquered a county before dying in 1042. Then his brother Miroslav inherited. He won a war against Hungary, lost one against Bulgaria, and in 1046 conquered Croatia from his older brother. He is a profoundly medicore person stat-wise, but greedy, thus presumably the expansionism.

Csak ‘the Depraved’ of Hungary died in 1044 after a reign of over 50 years. His 18-year-old son Mozes inherited. He would die just 4 years later, but those were four long years. Hungary had two titular Kingdoms (nomad clan titles from way back). The Chief of Bacs conquered Hadik in 1044 and the High Chief of Pecs Usora in 1046. Csak’s youngest son, Laszlo II, all of 12, now rules. His regency is trying to subjugate Usora. He is strong-willed and showing promise in intrigue.

In 1038 Pope Clemens ‘the Careless’ won a crusade against Fruili and became King of Italy. On his death in 1047 things split. The papacy became unlanded once again. Italy passed to his nephew as a theocracy. But Rothari fell fighting Fruili in 1047 and a courtier inherited it. Fruili is still around as a vassal duchy of Hungary.

Berber Sunni Lacumacesid started as rulers of Kairouan. Lacumaces inherited as an infant in 956. Once he reached adulthood, he expanded to four counties by his death in 996. Keraja ‘the Mutilator’ inherited and ruled until 1038, expanding to eight counties. His son Fahd inherited and made himself High Chief in 1047. He is quick.

Coptic Mandean Asyut was created by Aretee Shanouda in 1017 as part of a peasant religious revolt. He expanded down the Nile in a series of wars before his death in 1045. His son Hany is a dwarf who has lost both an arm and a leg in combat. He is generally competent other than not knowing what intrigue or diplomacy are. In his short reign he has won holy wars for Paraetonium and Cyrenaica.
1714948170943.png

In Ryazan, Surt ‘the Terrible’ was murdered in 1034 by his brother Inzhay who unlike the rest of the family was Russian Slavic. His son inherited, then 2 years later was forced to abdicate in Inzhay’s favor. Alexei ‘Strongarm’ Tikhich, a neighboring Russian count then subjugated Ryazan. Alexei is tall, attractive, and well-groomed and has the ambition to become King of Kievan Rus. His stats aren’t as majestic as his appearance.

Pskov has been ruled since 1028 by Sudislav II ‘the Young’. They have lost their Swedish lands. He won an independence revolt in 1045. He is failing in a war against the Khazars and also fighting several defensive wars. He is good at war.

Sigtrygg of Norway died in 1036. His son Ingemar inherited. He continued consolidation in Sweden and Finland. He fell in combat against Vikings in Scotland in 1048. His son Solvi inherited Sweden. One of his brothers inherited a rump Finland and the other got Norway (there was a fourth brother murdered by Finland brother). Sami Halsingland is trying to subgegate Norway while Slesvig is trying to subjugate Sweden.

Pomeralia is still ruled by Szymon. He won a border war against Norway in 1044 and is expanding in Denmark.

In West Frisia, Sorkver was succeeded in 1030 by his son Olafr ‘the Victorious’. He conquered broad lands in Burgundy and Lorraine before his death in 1042. Then his cousin Sorkver II inherited. He has the ambition to become King of Frisia and is great at diplomacy.

Sigbjorn ‘the Just’ ruled Ireland until he committed suicide in 1046. Over the course of his reign much of Ireland and Wales was conquered, though mostly by vassals. His son Frirek now rules and is trying to expand in Brittany.

Germanic Anglo-Saxon Essex was founded originally by a Norseman in 1027. The grandson of the founder was defeated by Arni in 1040. 1714948234624.png

Songhay African Gurma was inherited by Zaynab in 994 then her son Zalil in 1001. During this period it slowly expanded. Then in 1016 Hargani ‘the Quarreler’ inherited. Kanem was inherited by Hausa African Kukuna Daura in 1021. He then in 1027 created the Kingdom of Kanem. He expanded Kanem toward the Mediterranean Sea and also closer to home. Geteye of Abyssinia died in 1038, after losing Blemmyria and Afar to the Muslims. His daughter Totit inherited as her older brother was murdered by a courtier some years earlier. She is quite talented and is zealous and strong. She gained some lands in Nubia. She is only pretending to be a Miaphysite, secretly she is Mandean.

Mahmud Mubarakid conquered Afar and then died in 1032. His eldest son Sami II inherited then his second son Abdul-Gafur II in 1038. The realm has not further expanded. Abdul-Gafur is good at diplomacy and not much else.
1714948255829.png

Prithvipal Sallaksanavarman died in 1033. His son Kailaspal inherited and did some minor expansion. He died in 1042 and his son got Kuru while his uncle Jaipal got the rest of the realm.

His son Nar Singh ‘the Tormentor’ rules now. He is generally competent and recently won a border war.

There was a Papal Kingdom of Italy? That's new.

There's a Sunni ruler named Zahak the Torturer? The Zoroastrians must hate him...

Will the rulers of Merv manage to create a Zoroastrian Kingdom of Persia?

How did Ireland annex Lothian?

How did Braslav take control of Moesia? Was he in the line of succession after Soimir?

@HistoryDude Yep, Pope occasionally gets crusade title. Usually in a normal game Egypt, though not that common. Yeah, Zahak doesn't seem the type to be respectful of the beliefs of his former oppressors... On Merv, spoilers! Ireland gained Lothian when one of their vassals conquered it in 1041, though I think it had already been downsized a bit before then. Yep Braslav inherited.

Largest Realms by Holdings:
1. Hungary: 70, though only 46 counties
2. West Frisia: 69, though only 43 counties
3. Ireland: 64, a good 56 counties.
4. Vodamayutja: 59, but only 20 counties (feudal)
5. Milan: 42, but only 15 counties (feudal)
6. Norway 40 holdings, a good 36 counties
7. Bulgaria: 40 holdings, 29 counties
8. Muhammadid: 39 holdings, 28 counties
9. Itil: 39, good 34 counties
10. Hamdan: 35, 14 counties (feudal)
11. Pamphlagona: 33, 14 counties (feudal)
12. Essex: 32, 19 counties
13. Armeniacon: 30, 19 counties

Feudalism is spreading. Here's a map, but note its actually more widespread then it seems here. Thanks to CKII's subtly clever way (sarcasm) of handling the tribal-feudal shift, that tends to be fatal for the poor victim so a lot of feudal vassals under tribal lieges or direct rule by tribal rulers... Northern and Eastern Europe, Tibet, and Sub-Saharan Africa still are basically pure tribal. But the core belt around the Mediterranean, through Persia and Northern India is well on its way.

In CKII Christianity is a little too prone to collapsing into heresy at the drop of a hat. While of course Catholicism and the Byzantine Empire tend to overpower the Muslims in the long run. Which unlike Christians, for reasons I’m not clear on, are much less heresy-prone in long run. I’ve had games where there has literally not been a single non-Sunni Muslim province anywhere. When of course in reality the dynamic was the other way, heresy was much more of a political force in the Muslim world than in Medieval Europe.

In terms of culture on the steppes, the Kirghiz and Khitan are gone. Mongols have expanded under Kanghai to extend to the Altay Mountains The Uyghurs have expanded a lot recently thanks to Charkliq and Dunkheger north and east from the Tarim Basin. Karluks have barely expanded thanks to the eternal war between west and east among them. Cumans never had a major realm beyond Ubagan. Turks expanded under Novogrodekid, then fell apart and got split into two bunches. Bolgars have fallen apart since their Duchy was lost to the Khazars. Vologda was conquered by a Bolghar adventurer in 986, culture flipped, his descendants still rule as Khazar vassals.
1715264508198.png

Mongols are still Tengri as at game start. Manichean elements in Karluks won over Tengri before some reverted. Turks embrached Khurmazta then some reverted to Zoroastrian. Tengri won out among the Khazars. Cumans remained Tengri and Uyghars remained Buddhist.
1715264521822.png

Breakup of Visigothic is still in early stages. Berber has gained footholds in Europe at Denia and Lecce. Former from a Berber claimant conquering in 1019. Later from Muslims in Sicily expanding in Italian boot. Egyptian has lost a county each to Coptic and Levantine. Levantine has also expanded in the Duchy of Arabia thanks to Emirs of Jerusalem. Lombard has become Italian. Bulgarian gained a county in Wallachia and Hungarian in Bosnia. Poitiers is Dutch thanks to inheritance 100 years back. Otherwise not much has changed.
1715264531736.png

In North Africa, Sunni has squeezed back the heresies. Ibadi, Shia, and Kharijite all lost ground. Some of the Shia became Qarmatian. Egyptian Miaphysites are now Mandian. A couple counties have been gained and lost to Islam. Random one now Orthodox thanks to a countess picking up her husband’s religion (her descendants later inherited Paraetonium). Some Druze pockets in Levant. Orthodoxy still is present in a decent number of counties, but rarely in charge. Rather realms formed in heretic revolts. Iconoclast Armeniacon, Paphlagonia, Achaia, Alania. Paulician Bulgaria. Barlaamite Dioclea. Catholic Europe nearly disappeared. It’s the opposite, more Catholic rulers than subjects. Fraticelli won in Italy. Adoptionist in Iberia and Aquitaine except the Portuguese and Basques prefer Lollardism. Sloviens and Bavarians also like Lollardism. Anjou is ruling over a Free Spirit population.
1715264545157.png

Thanks to West Frisia, Norman culture is spreading across northern France. Only a few counties in the British Isles and France have converted to Norse culture. Swedes are starting to develop. Pecheneg county in Poland from an adventurer in 972, also Orthodox.
1715264555485.png

Germanic religion is spreading in Finland. British Isles have roughly equal numbers of Free Spirits, Lollards, Cathars, and Catholics, but all are ruled by Germanics (some have gone native in culture, but apparently don’t want to touch the religious mess.
1715264566136.png

Songhay and Zaghawa have each picked up a county, while coastal Nubia has gained a Bedouin foothold.
1715264575892.png

The pagan areas still are. Miaphsites still largely dominate witith Judaizer and Mandean pockets. Jews still present.
1715264592145.png

There are Sindhi pockets in Sistan. Baloches and Sindhis are even more mixed up then in real life. Dwin has become Persian. Nepali has expanded a bit south and Bodpa into Kamarupa.
1715264605175.png

Buddhism has gained in Afghanistan and the Punjab. India is basically unchanged. Shia pockets are gone in Persia. Zoroastrianism is more or less unchanged.

I appreciated this update!

How did Suomenusko spread into Russia? Was it always there?

Also, who rules in Finland? How did they become Germanic?

1100 A.D. Update:
1716847892683.png

Uyghur Buddhist Dunkheger has exploded over the last 50 years. Eregje ‘the Wise’ gained Altay in 1052, Om in 1058, defeated Khangai in 1062, and took a big slice from Senramid in 1064. His brother Adigh inherited before being overthrown in 1071 by a vassal. Ketim ‘the Unready’ expanded in the West and overran Senramid’s eastern lands. He died in 1077 of an infected wound. His son Bortil ‘the Brute’ ruled until 1087, dying in battle against the Mongols. His son Asug ‘the Frog’ looked smart on paper. In practice he also died against the Mongols in 1094 having achieved little. Then the throne reverted back to Tutuq, the grandson of Eregje. He has been more successful, conquering Charkliq in 1086, subjecting Cherchen, and taking 2 counties in 1094 from the Mongols. He is outgoing and known as a poet, a scholar, but also lustful and paranoid.

Besud became the main Mongol realm under Bolkhadar ‘the Despoiler’ who defeated the Karluks. He died in 1080 after a 36-year reign. His son proved not up to the task, being defeated and executed by Chagatai ‘the Butcher’ in 1086. Chagatai largely successfully resisted Dunkheger’s expansion. He died in 1097 without sons, so a courtier named Monge inherited.

In 1055, Azeg II ‘Sharp Tongue’ created the Kingdom of Sibir. He died in 1057 and his son Blush inherited. Blush died in 1062 without sons, and Kutun Bachman inherited. But 4 years later, Anava ‘the Usurper’, Blush’s 18-year-old daughter managed to overthrow him, reestablishing Khanty rule. She then ruled for 30 years. In 1096 she was forced to abdicate in favor of Kutun’s son Koza ‘the Able’. He is ambitious, fierce in combat, and popular with the ladies. He is also a syphilitic lunatic. He has expanded the realm at nomad expense. It has been 145 years since Cilbu Bachman conquered the Khanty lands and still the struggle continues.

In Han Taoist Jiuquan, Rangneng gained a few more counties before his death in 1058. Since then Jiuquan hasn’t expanded. Jiang Dan ‘the Good’ was elected in 1058. His son Zhaodu inherited in 1069 before dying in 1095. It then passed to his nephew Ziyi who died after a year. Then Ziyi’s father and Dan’s son Jifu inherited. He is ambitious, a good steward, otherwise mediocre.

The Karluk Khurmatza Yolaids inherited Ilcurid in 1076. Satuq died in 1078 after conquering another Karluk realm.. His brother Kurtel ‘the Wicked’ inherited and conquered some western lands in 1086. He died in 1096 at which point Baghirid broke away. Bazir ‘the Evil’ inherited and has conquered some more western lands.

Khazar Tengri Itil passed to the Busirid dynasty in 1059. Busir II ‘the Just’ was a successful ruler, added some land, before dying in 1066. His brother Tabar II inherited. He was Sumensko. Then Tengri brother Tabghac ‘the Monster’ inherited in 1069. Then in 1089 Tabar’s son, Bugha ‘Iron Hand’ inherited. He’s not particularly competent. Defeated a revolt, but was forced to white peace a recent war.

Docimiumid is Turkish Zoroastrian. It is a recovery of the Tugrulid realm. Ridvin I ‘the Accursed’ ruled from 1046-61 and expanded Tugrulid north. His nephew Rustem inherited, but was overthrown and executed by his vassal Ridvin II Docimiumid. He reduced Kitbughai to vassals before his death in 1071. Then the Tugrulids were back. First Savar ‘the Bewitched’ and then his son Tenrivermis ‘the Noble’. Then in 1096, Ridvin II’s son Sonmez inherited.

Nenets Suomensko Votyaki dates back to a starting count. They became High Chiefs in 974 under Yapti. They then stagnated. But Yapti’s family died out in 993 helped by family feuding. Then the Nabtiko inherited. Ultimately the main branch died out and Illme, a distant cousin, inherited. Her son Sirtya Ngaid inherited in 1044 after murdering his brother. Since then it has passed parent to child. Khatyako ‘the Lady of Votyaki’ inherited in 1075. Her son Nga Syudbyid inherited in 1079. His daughter Atpalha now rules. They have slowly been expanding north toward the Arctic.

1716847952651.png

Zahak ‘the Tormentor’ died in 1058. His son Firdews inherited, but fell in battle against the Zoroastrians. His brother Sawar inherited. He died in in 1078 and his 9-year-old son Xarmandar inherited. He conquered some counties on reaching adulthood and made himself Shah in 1097. The Shia Fedayeen set up in Tabaristan and both them and him are attacking the rump descendant of Kavoosid for Gilan.

The Mkhargrdzeli had long ruled Tiflis. Ambitious lunatic Gvantsa ‘the Able’ inherited in 1034. She created the Duchy of Kartli in 1037. She then rested on her laurels until her death in 1065. Then her sister Gulchara inherited. She was zealous and a good general. Kakheti fell in 1067. Abkhazia in 1067. Tao in 1075. Then lands near Derbent in 1079. She then created the Kingdom of Georgia. She fell fighting Trebizond in 1087. She would later be beatified. Her son Seyfullah inherited, but was Levantine Monothelite of the Adhid dynasty like his father. He died in 1093 and his son Zahir now rules. He has lost several counties and is fighting Armeniacon and a Sunni revolt.

Bardas ‘the Tormentor’ created the Kingdom of Trezibond in 1052. He was overthrown in favor of his daughter Anthe ‘the Glorious’ in 1056. She ruled until 1087. Then her great-nephew Konstas inherited. But the Duchy of Armeniacon went to her son as an independent realm. Konstas has attacked Muslim realms several times unsuccessfully. A vassal did though conquer Paphlagonia in 1097.

Svetislav of Bulgaria died in 1054. The realm then bounced around every few years thanks to short life spans. Epirus broke away in 1065 and Braslaw ‘the Cruel’ made it a kingdom too. He expanded it a bit and then in 1084 inherited Bulgaria. He left no heirs, so on his death in 1092, Epirus and Bulgaria went to different vassals. Bertalan II rules in Bulgaria and is trying to press his claim on Epirus. Ivan rules in Epirus. Both are quite medicore.

Theocratic Italy has continued to grow. Urbanus ruled 1051-58. Then Caelestinus ‘the Sword of God’ inherited. Milan and Genoa were added in 1071 in a crusade. Several transalpine territories over the decade. Then in 1082 he was elected pope and abdicated from Italy. He recaptured Rome and moved the papal seat from Siena to there. His successor in Italy was Eugene ‘the Sea-Devil’. He was elected pope in 1091 when Caelestinus died. Italy went to Guerrino and then Ezzelino.

Fahd of Lacumacesid conquered a few more counties on the western edge. In 1064, he made himself a Sultan. He didn’t do much for the rest of his reign, dying in 1087. His son Takfarinas then inherited. He had already conquered lands in Tripolitania during his father’s reign. He then in 1088 took a Tunis foothold from Sardinia. He made Murcia a tributary. He is currently attacking Sardinia in a holy war. He is strong, sympathetic to other Abrahamic religions, has good stats, and is a syphilitic lunatic.

Hany ‘of the Empty Pockets’ conquered Paraetonium in 1059. Alexandria in 1061. He died in 1074 and his son Gerges I ‘of the Empty Pockets’ inherited. He ruled until 1096 and other than adding Damietta did little. Then his son Gerges II ‘the Monster’ inherited. He lost a war for Cyrenaica in 1098. He is currently fighting a tyranny revolt, though should win eventually. He is cruel and zealous, good at stewardship, and doesn’t know the meaning of diplomacy.

1716848151132.png

His son Briachislav inherited and was murdered in 1093 by a member of the previous ruling dynasty. Then Yaroslaw, youngest son of Lev, inherited. He is good at intrigue, not much else.

Sudislav II ‘the Young’ expanded Pskov across the Volga in the 1060s and crowned himself King of Novgorod in 1066. He died in 1078 and his son Dobrynia ‘the Bold’ inherited. He is bright, shrewd, and the best diplomat in the known world. He hasn’t done much though other than lose a county in 1079 to Norway.

Solvi ‘the Wise’ of Sweden lost his throne to Ireland in 1072. Finland was ruled by Gudrodr ‘the Cruel’ until 1080 and then by his daughter Tegla, though she rules all of 1 county. Norway on the other hand has thrived. Asbjorn ‘the Ambitious’ inherited in 1058. He then launched a series of campaigns in Sweden and Finland, by the end ruling most of each despite not holding those titles. He died in 1081 and his son Ale ‘the Monster’ inherited. He committed suicide in 1091 and Gudrodr’s son was chosen as heir. Fredrik ‘the Just’ is ambitious and currently winning a couple defensive wars.

Szymon ‘the Lionhearted’ of Pomerania was murdered by a vassal in 1061. His son Bozydar ‘the Cruel’ inherited. He has expanded the realm in northern Germany but lost some Scandinavian holdings. He is shrewd, a great general, good at most things besides diplomacy.

Suni ‘the Conqueror’ came from Sweden and conquered Gloucester in 1015. He made himself High Chief of Hwicce in 1024 and conquered Lancaster right before his death in 1030. His son Gospatrick inherited, but lost Lancaster by 1047 to Essex. A courtier named Porfinn inherited in 1048 then died before the year was out. Aethelberht subjected Essex in 1064. They were split on his death in 1072 between his sons. Thurfrith ‘the Ill-Ruler’ gained Hwicce, while Aethalberht II gained Essex. Aethalberht II died though and Ulfcytel, a younger son of Thurfrith inherited. Pretty boring in recent decades.

Frirek ‘the Cruel’ of Ireland died in 1062 and his son Sigbjorn II ‘the Unchaste’ inherited. He overran Denmark and added Sweden to the realm in 1072. He converted to Iconoclast Christianity, though most vassals remained pagan. He died without sons, so his court physician Serafinu ‘the Monster’ inherited in 1084. He has high learning, but is also a lunatic.
1716848203928.png

In Songhay, Hargani ‘the Quarreler’ died in 1053. His son Laraba inherited only to be slain in a duel by his brother Zalil ‘Ironside’ in 1060. In 1068 he lost his throne to his brother Aranda ‘the Hideous’ (who had killed another brother back in 1061), but kept his life and a duchy, before being murdered by one of his sisters a decade later. Akoi Yatenga of Timbuktu then interrupted this loving family and subjugated Songhay. He died the following year and his son Birma inherited. In 1094 Bannu Tunkara of Bambuk subjugated Songhay. His son Fadazu now rules a realm doubled by the weird trick of being conquered by its neighbors. He is a brilliant diplomat and is sympathetic to Islam.

In Kanem, Musa died in 1054 before he managed to subdue his brother. Danladi ‘Ironside’ then inherited. He still rules. He conquered several counties, expanding to the Mediterranean Sea in the 1070s and sometime during the 1080s converted to Islam. He is Zealous in his new faith. He is shrewd, strong, bright, and comely but has lost a hand and an eye in combat.

Ethiopian Miaphysite Totit ‘the Old’ of Abyssinia lost Alodia to a Mandean revolt in 1064. At her death in 1067 a Nubian noble named Fasilidas of the Tefere dynasty inherited. He was murdered by a distant cousin the following year. Another distant cousin, Girma ‘the Accursed’ inherited. His rule was disastrous. The Muhammadids conquered Makuria and crucified the 15-year-old Duke in 1071. In 1072 the heart of Abyssinia was ripped out by a Mandean revolt, forming Axum. Then in 1073 Mubarakid conquered Berbera. In 1079 his cousin Fethee ‘the Accursed’ murdered him and inherited. He died in 1087 and another cousin, Bekele ‘the Evil’ inherited. She was Mandean and reconquered Afar from Mubarakid in 1093. But she now looks likely to lose Gondar to the Muhammadids. She is zealous, ambitious, and quite intelligent.

In 1052 Abdullah Muhammadid died and his son Sami inherited. He created the Kingdom of Arabia in 1059. Makuria and a few random counties were gained. He then died of a combo of tuberculosis and leprosy in 1083. His son Aram inherited and ruled until 1096. Then cousin Mansur ‘the Lame’ inherited. He is attractive, strong, and zealous, thus the war against Abyssinia.

Abdul-Gafur ‘the Old’ made himself a king in 1060. He conquered Berbera. His son Alim inherited in 1085. He was defeated in 1093 by Abyssinia and then 2 years later was overthrown by younger brother Aghlab. He is a brilliant diplomat but a decedent carouser.
1716848284005.png

Ghocheh ‘the Just’ in 1059 crowned herself Queen of Khorasan. She died the next year and her daughter Bulit inherited. Then her brother Tuzmish who fell against rebels. Then his nephew Tatpar ‘the Illuminated’ inherited in 1083. They all took after Ghocheh’s husband and are Uyghur Buddhist. The realm hasn’t expanded much.

Bodpa Buddhist Gunggyal Hungrel died in 1050. His son Lek ‘the Butcher’ inherited and rules to this day. He is incompetent at everything except war and theology. He created the Kingdom of Uttaranchal in 1086. However the only expansion has been by a vassal. Praniyata inherited a county as an infant. She then expanded her lands. Interestingly she is Saka in culture. Also a lunatic.

The Gujarati Jain Someshwarid date back to game start. In 968 they elevated themselves to Rajas. Not much happened, until Dungar-Singh inherited in 1030. The neighboring Debulids had created the Kingdom of Sindh which he conquered form them. He died in 1040 and his son Harischandra inherited. He expanded the realm a bit. Then in 1057 his daughter Sundaridevi ‘the Great’ inherited. She added some more land and ruled until 1094. Her son Shurapala now rules.

Bodpa Buddhist Dondup ‘the Monster’ inherited a single county at the age of 8 in 1013. Starting in 1045 he went on a conquering spree, creating a duchy in 1059. He died in 1070 and his nephew Mangsong inherited. He died in 1094 after a slow reign. His son Lhanang is a diligent ruler good at stewardship. He conquered lands in Nepal and a county was gained from Kamarupa.

Dakri ‘the Just’ conquered a few counties before his death in 1064. His son Gangkarwa ruled until 1070. Then his brother Dakri II inherited before being overthrown by his sister Sadmarkar. She was then subjugated by a Tibetan chief named Lotsen in 1082. He died in 1086 and his son Chokey inherited. Then a cousin named Tritog, a Bodpa Jain inherited in 1091. He is focused on theology and stewardship.

Hindustani Buddhist Brahmapala Jujharid conquered a few counties then in 970 he conquered Trigarta from his younger brother. He then crowned himself King of Gondwana. In 979 he died and his 7-year-old daughter Akal ‘the Tenacious’ inherited. She lost a few counties on the eastern edge, gained a few on the western one. She is generally competent except in martial and is pregnant with her first child.

Teluga Hindu Mallapid has its roots back to 992 when a 65-year-old courtier inherited a county. His grandson, also named Mallapa, inherited in 1015. He conquered a county in 1018 and then 5 more from 1034 to his death in 1048. His daughter Hariharamba inherited in 1048 and created a duchy in 1051. She died in 1059 and her son Mallapa ‘the Noble’ inherited. The duchy of Vengi was added by 1062. In 1072 he created the Kingdom of Telingana. To his north lay Singamanayakid, also very much a rising power and to his south was Perumalid. So instead of finishing unifying the Telugu, he swept west doubling the size of his realm from 1084 to his death in 1096. His son Kaapayanayaka won a war last year. He is quick and shows promise.

The Steppe is as unstable as ever. How long will the Dunkhegers last?

Will Trebizond ever reclaim Armeniacon?

It looks like the Balkans and Anatolia are settling down. Can Trebizond, Bulgaria, or Epirus (re)form the Byzantine Empire?

Is Norway aiming to form the Empire of Scandinavia? Should Ireland be worried? How likely is it that Ireland abandons their distant lands and conquers Hwicce to form the Empire of Britannia?
