After a number of wars with Spain started by my allies (No stab hit, hehe), I find myself ruling the Carribbean, with no less than 2 CoTs in Honduras and Guadeloupe. (you know, burning down TPs is a lot of fun!). The only problem now is that I am getting pirates in the Carribbean every month, and sometimes twice a month:mad:

Now, given that the Carribbean historically was a hotbed of pirate activity, I can't say that I'm surprised, but they always lose and they are a real pain, especially when you are preparing for a multi pronged attack on Turkey and France (allied now, but got a CB against France - gotta use it - will try for 3 French and 3 Turkish provinces at once - yeah I'm greedy). Is there any way I can lessen the frequency of pirate activity? Maybe the next EU should have pirate bases that pop up every now and then that you can destroy to lessen their activity for a while.

I bet the rulers of those days would have wanted such a solution too =)

Anyway, I've read somewhere that you can edit the game to remove pirates alltogether.
However it is a bit of cheating and then you might just as well add 10.000 D to your treasury and forget about those pirates taking some of your income. Much easier solution to implement.

The pirates seem to die down quite a bit later in the game. Assuming you have a few years where you're not conquering, they make an interesting diversion to see how many you can sink. And BTW, I've had one stinking pirate kick the ass of my 11 warship fleet, so it's not always a given

just ignore them, they eventually die off of attrition and for the 1 or 2 ducats a month they take away from you, it's not worth the fight, unless you have nothing else to do :D

just mouse-over the right number in the colony/province view and it will say how much you are loosing to pirate activities.

They are pests, and distruptions to the natural order to things - they must die. :)

My private theory is that the Pirates breed upon success. That is, the more you ignore them the more of them there will be. Eventually, they could cause some serious problems. From save files, they do seem to be some kind of pseudo-country with income (stolen from you), tech research, etc. They build those ships that bother you from that income. I've noticed in my current campaign, that there are a lot less pirates - the AI has had ships out all the time in the Caribbean due to various wars, and consequently they get in fights with the pirates a lot. As time has gone on, hardly any pirates are about.

Again, this is raw speculation.

I believe the manual states that as you build higher level fortresses in an area, pirate activity dies down - they like the quiet life, I suppose :)

Fortifications help

I read in the manual (the American version) that increasing the level of fortifications of coastal provinces reduce piracy. It seems to work; after increasing my fortifications in my coastal provinces in the West Indies and China, the pirates either went away or the number of ships in each pirate fleet went down (typically 4-6 ships down to 2-4 after the forts). Hope this helps.

Hey! I must have given up on the manual - no index to look things up. Thanks. I'll try that.

On page 74-75 of the American version manual should have the comment on the pirates and forts. I've actually been working on a simple index for a while and one of these days, I'll get it done and posted (unless somebody beats me to it).
