While on a trip in Russia I bought Hearts of Iron there, distributed by snowball.ru

They told me the game is in English (which is true and made me happy) but the instalation is in Russian.

setup.exe doesn't work properly, as it displays text corrupted and it prompts me to fill 2 empty boxes (1 and 2) and I have no idea what I should put there and after 3 failed attempts instalation exits to desktop.

I have the original box and cds and can't make out any kind of serial number to enter there (well actually if looks like it is asking for 2 serial numbers)

My windows are UK windows XP.

Unable to install the game through setup.exe and rather frustated at snowball.ru tech support help (they suggest I reinstall my operating system as it must be corrupted if it can't display cyrillic properly) I managed to uncompress the .cab files and the game runs fine but I can't apply patch 1.02 (NA version or the russian version, both fail as they are unable to find the game)

Can anybody either tell me what I have to put in these boxes to install the game properly, or what registry key should I create in the registry so that the patch instalation engine is aware that I do have the proper and original game installed?

Many thanks,

The snowball version has special copy protection on it that prevents it from being installed on systems that are not running the Russian version of Windows. This is because the distributers are prohibeted from selling it outside of Russia due to the extreme low cost. about $5 USD IIRC.

Sorry but I do not think you will get it to work.
