  • Rome Gold
I was able to play when I had vista, but with a new version Windows 9, Rome Gold does not work.

I installed Rome, and the Vae Victus from my Rome gold
Installed the new patch when I looked in updates.

I can load the game but the map is "flickering" and when I move the cursor to the right side of the map it actually moves me all the way to the left side of the mini map.

I know the above is probably not enough to figure out the problem so please tell me what you will need to see to assist.

The game is basically unplayable so I do not know if it would crash, since that is not the problem.

Thanks

Windows 9? Do you mean 7, or 8? It certainly works under 7, but it untested under 8 (which is itself unreleased as yet).

That is correct, but Rome in general works fine under Win7. I'd suggets you try a full clean reinstall outside the system path.

First move any valued save games elsewhere. Then uninstall the game, and then manually delete the game directory - this is important. Reinstall Rome:Gold - choose a new directory like c:\games\rome\ instead of the suggested path. Download the 2.32c patch, and run it to install it; make 100% sure you point it to that same new directory above so that for instance the new rome.exe overwites the old one, the new romegame.exe overwrites the old one, and so on. Once done right-click on the game's desktop icon and set it to run as administrator, and to disable desktop composition.

If you still get the problem post the version and checksum; they might be visible on the main game menu, but if not then go to start an MP game as host and you'll see them there.

The above did not work.

I am sorry but I do not know what or how to veiw the version or Checksum or really know what they are.

By Version it does say on multi player: Rome v2.32c (SWBL)

Please tell me how to show you my checksum or post link to directions on this. Sorry I have very poor computer skills! :)

I did a DxDiag like I saw you ask in another post. Please let me know how to look at Checksum and I will post that info too.

Great News!!!

I got it to work. I am not sure what I did but my computer showed a message saying something like:
"Program is not compatible and it will be run with windows color basic"

I am not sure what that is but the problems I had encountered were no longer there.

Of course I now need to head to work so I will have to wait until this evening to play....... I am sure I will be productive at work!! LOL

Thanks for the assist and am glad to see activity still in this game which is one of my favorites.

SWBL is the checksum, and is correct. Glad you got it going, although I confess to not really understanding how.

Well it ran this morning but I can not get it to repeat it.

Basically a window popped up saying something about it not being compatible to Aero and that it would have to run on basic. It has something to do with graphics. I keep looking how to manually make this change but can not. Frustrated since I am now home from work and would like to play.

I wish I understood computers more so I could actually know what happened enough to explain it better but I cannot. This sucks. I still appreciate the attempt at helping me.

Did you run it as Admin and disable desktop composition, as I recommended in post #4? That should effective disable Aero.

I had the same problem on windows 7 and got it working by doing this:

Start menu - Control Panel - Appearance and personalisation - Theme - select 'windows 7 basic' from the menu

That is what I ended up finding out and doing. It worked then. I had to reboot the computer after doing it and it has worked fine since then.

I was able to play and played for 3 hours without any problems, well other then needing to improve my game!! LOL

Thank you all for your help and this problem is solved!!! I have loaded the game about 10 times to test it and it has worked everytime now!

I did and it did not work, but booting it the way you suggested above is what made that window pop up about aero and windows basic, which got the problem solved. I appreciate your time and efforts and am excited that I can now play. Thank you again to all!!! :)
