Paradox have many good traditions.
Having to play ironman to earn achievements is not one of them.
Achievement give people something to try off the beaten path and ironman completely defeats that purpose.
Please drop this requirement, thank you.

Ironman is basically what hardcore is for diablo. In games like CK2, achievements only count if you have it on, as well as being more restricted to some game options (like, turn off mongol invasion, no achievements for you.)

But that's basically standard AoW right?

AoW 1: If you as leader die, it's over.
AoW 2: If your Wizard dies while you don't have a Wizard's tower, it's over.
AoW 3: If your leader is dead and your throne city is gone, it's over.

There's no "you died, try again" at all in AoW.

Not really - it's also a restriction on save-scumming. You only have 1 save game, and if you die, you can't load it anymore.

So in AoW 3 terms I suppose you can't load it anymore after it's game over? Would you still be able to load if you're not content with how a battle went (yes I know, very unfair, but I do it all the time).

It's seen in AoW 3 in the PBEM multiplayer system, where it is used to notify other players if someone has reloaded in their turn. For instance if someone crashes the game and then reloads the turn from the start again. It's not so much a problem in single-player, but in multiplayer ironman is used to ensure fairness.

Yes, that'd be impossible. Also, you can't save, play 5 turns, change your mind, and go back. You're stuck with every choice and every RMG roll. Just like in Diablo Hardcore.

The real purpose of ironman for achievements is to prevent people abusing the system to make achievements easier, also to prevent using mods to make it easier. If you can save-scum your way to an achievement, it's not an achievement.

Imagine (hypothetically) they had an achievement for winning a certain number of consecutive fights without taking damage. Without a restriction on save-scumming, it wouldn't be that hard. With that restriction, it's actually an achievement to do it because it required skill (or at least a little luck).

It wouldn't be that hard anyway. If you can do something in a game it's not that hard.
There is no purpose for iron-man for achievements.

I don't care about Steam achievements at all, but I have to say that Ironman is the only way I play Stellaris. It makes me think twice before I make a big move like going to war with a major power and I love the excitement it brings to the game. I wouldn't mind having it for the Planetfall campaign.

I think we've got two separate issues here. I normally play Stellaris in Ironman mode myself, so I'm okay with having it in Planetfall. But I don't think the only way to get achievements should be by playing in Ironman mode. Maybe separate achievements for Ironman players?

A normal achievement and an ironman version would be good. That way you can say "I have all achievements" without having to ironman, but those who don't like the idea of maybe cheating can say "look, I got all achievements in ironman".
