Or is my impression wrong?

Edit: It is wrong, but I still haven't figured out the limitations. Anybody care to shed some light?

Also: It does seem that progressing in court ranks doesn't give you increased benefits on par with the increased costs of acquiring each next rank. Am I right?

As a small clan in the early game (with no plans of attacking anybody), does it make sense to convert money into honour or do I want to build guilds instead?

Yup, only 1 upgrade possible at the same time in 1 province. So if you start as a kokujin with a single kori then progress is really slow... and you never have any money, really. 3 kori is the minimum for a happy game because then you can do castle upgrade in 1, town in another and you have 3rd kori for income.

Court ranks do what they say on the tin, i.e. you do get 0.1% honour extra each month for Jugoi but they are pretty expensive.

As a small clan in early game I would say that not planning to attack anybody is asking for it... For me, at least, Sengoku is all about chaining wars for the first couple of decades. I've had games like my last Mori campaign where I was on the offensive the entire time from the word go, gobbling up land and getting the entire Chugoku and the whole of Kyushu and I STILL got mobbed by the Yamana. Dunno, I tried to play a "slow", CK2-esque campaign a few times and it never ended well. Maybe someone can give me some pointers ("play as Nanbu" is not a valid tip btw).

I would always invest in honour only when I need to i.e. when I know for sure I'm going to attack some poor bastard and I need an honour buff but I can usually scrape enough of honour together through marriages etc. without having to pay through the nose for it. +3 honour for 20 gold is a total ripoff.
