I looked through the history of this forum and I've seen this question asked before but I didn't find a sufficient answer.

I am trying to play on a LAN with my one friend, and we can't start because when I host a LAN game, it appears on his list of local games but it is GREYED OUT and unclickable. What could be causing this? I have:

-disabled all antivirus and antispyware software on both PCs
-disabled windows firewall
-connected both of us to ports on the same router (Linksys)
-made sure we were on the same windows network (we can share files and everything)

We are trying to play victoria 1.03c with VIP .04b installed (though not necessarily play victoria, vanilla would do)

Router help tells people to clear certain "ports" but I am assuming that is only for valkyrienet and internet (ip) play.

In any case I also totally disabled my router's firewall and even tried fiddling with the DMZ option and in no case can I get any internet or valk game going :(

What could I be forgetting?

I see so you don't reccomend trying to play VIP on a lan at all?

I have not tried it but have heard nothing positive from VIP MP. In fact from what Ive heard it does not really work at all. Although being on LAN may alleviate those problems?

As for the greyed out thing... I do not know. Does the same thing happen when he hosts? Simple, but first I'd try is to reinstall w/ clean copies to 1.03c.

Refresh my memory; could the grey thingy be due to differences between the installations, e.g. by having differences within the db-directory?

Have you tried connecting directly using the internet option? I haven't been able to get Viccy to work on LAN or Valkryie but can connect if I specify the ip address.
I know you mentioned you tried an Internet connection, but that was the only way I have been able to get Viccy to work.

is it grey only on LAN or also on valk?

in my experience if the install is different it willl give the incorrect version error. Ive never seen it greyed out before, my best guess would be a corruption in vicky itself somewhere, try a clean install on both machines.
