Cannot Start City Skylines in Steam

When I click on play the game start box appears(with blue circle) then immediately closes - it goes back to the game page in steam and after 5 secs the STOP button changes back to Play,
Latest patch installed today - 1.17.1
DLCs all up to Financial District -
MODS as recommended by Biffa. If I could get to start screen I would disable. The game worked OK about 6 months ago.

I think you are saying you never even see our launcher. Given that, You can bypass the launcher by following these instructions:

Download the attached cities.bat.zip file
Extract from it cities.bat
Place the .bat file in your game's Steam folder (In the same place as your cities.exe)
Right click the game in your Steam library
Go to properties
Select Launch Options
Copy and Paste cities.bat %command% into the input box
X out of that screen
Run the game

I have tried the batch file and the play/stop button flips back to play even faster and It does not even try to launch the game

Then I'm afraid we've done something wrong! I was right to say you never saw our launcher originally, is that right?

If so please go through those steps again, they are known to work!

Originally I used to see the Launcher screen but not since I have had the problem. Without the batch file I see chirper start to do his blue circle, when i run the batch file it crashes before the screen with chirper appears

If I uninstall everything and reinstall the game will all my DLCs be downloadable

I still cannot get the game to load. I backed up the program directory, uninstalled the game, deleted the program directory, re-installed the game, removed the cities bat % command% and clicked play - I had a couple of splash screens and then over 3 hours of chirper chasing his tail!!!! but game did not start.
Killed game and shutdown steam & computer.
restarted computer , then steam, added batch file and command line, clicked start, Start button went to stop & 5 seconds later back to Start but no game window . PLEASE HELP, I enjoyed CSL and am looking forward to CSL2 but will not risk buying if I cannot get CSL to work. It stopped working 6 months ago worked one day but not the next but did nothing as started working away. Now have time to play but CAN NOT.

When you hit PLAY in Steam, do you see our launcher ? If so, we still have not set up the above process properly in some way, as you should not see the launcher at all then.

If you do not see our launcher AND the game has trouble starting from Steam, then you have a second problem of some sort affecting the game rather than the launcher.
In your Steam Library right-click on this game and choose Properties. In the Launch Options line, paste this in there:

-noWorkshop -disableMods

If the game still does not start then, attach here the game's log file
...\Steam\steamapps\common\Cities Skylines\Cities Data\output_log.txt
