I have installed the game and the latest patch 1.01 and the game crashes when I start it. It tries to initialize the sound and then it crashes to the desktop.

** AMD Athlon processor
** Windows XP
** Direct X 8.0
** VIA soundcard built in to the motherboard
** ATI RAGE graphics card

All my other games work perfectly, including EU and EU2...

Anyone with some input????

I would definitely start by updating your DirectX to 8.1 and see if that works. While you're at it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to double check that your other drivers are current. ;)

Post back here to let us know how that worked. :)

Another temporary fix is to rename the music sub-folder under your HOI installation folder - of course, you'll lose the music in the game even if it works but at least you might get into the game...

We're still working on a final solution to this problem.

Try renaming your AVI folder to AVIbak, you will miss the intro videos but the game may go.

My misstake about DirectX, I do have 8.1... so that is not a problem.

I did try to rename the musik folder and that works, I can play the game. But i do hope that this get fixed in a patch because I do want to hear the musik when I play.

Also the game crashed yesterday when I tried to merge to division and make a corps and I controlled Sweden. It was the first time I tried this, i will restart the game and se if this will happen again or if it was only a fluke.

If it does then post this in the Bug forum and retain a save file made just before the game crashes in case it is wanted :)

you can use WinAmp to play the music files IIRC. Just add them to your list.

I have the same problem. Instead of doing anything over-exotic, use the config program to turn the sound OFF. If it doesnt work (mine does not), open settings.cfg (located the same place as hoi.exe) using notepad.

Change "MUSIC_ON" to "MUSIC_OFF". Problem solved!

Now either play the game without music untill a patch comes around, or do, as others say, play the mp3 files in the background using another program. You will still have sound effects.
