I don't know if this is a bug or what...

I can't seem to get my ships close enough to the enemy to light up the boarding button (this is on the tactical level). I spent some time doing custom battles to test and never once managed to board the enemy. My ships always seem to turn away before they get close enough (presumably to avoid collision).

anyone have any ideas?

Your ship has to be close enough the target ship for few seconds. When you are close enough, an icon appears with a filling bar. When the bar is full, the boarding action-icon lights up and clicking it will execute the boarding.

Now, you can do this in RTS-mode, but give your ship way points (hold CTRL) so that its course is roughly the same direction as target ship. Ships will try to avoid collision.

It's easier in DC-mode where you can manually steer the ship into perfect position.

Remember to have marines or wipe out some of the enemy crew with grape shots before boarding.

....

The easiest way is to dis-mast the enemy ship first (Chain Shot)

Then bring your ship across her bow and come to a complete stop with the enemy ship abeam (to the side of you).

Fire grape only at this point.

The enemy ship will continue to approach at 1kn so you should stop not too far in front.

The 'boarding bar' should appear after the bump. :)

Basically boarding is resolved by the numbers. Experience counts too. Marines are tougher than sailors, so having them gives you clear edge. But they are not compulsory and they do take up that cargo space.

I usually have one ship with marines to handle the boardings and other ships without marines do the shooting and looting.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I have now managed to board several ships in DC mode where is seems pretty straightforward. Still havent got it to work in RTS mode but thats probably a minor point.

I wish there was a little window that popped up during boarding to let you know how the fight is going.

Otherwise, the tactical level seems quite well done.

I agree. There are lots of people on this board who seem to dislike the naval combat. I personally think this is the best that I've seen it done. The only things I would like to see changed is that the AI should be improved to avoid collisions with friendly ships, and the attacker should usually if not always have the weather gauge.

I totally agree with you. It's very annoying watching my war fleet running into each other. So very annoying and expencive  But other then that great combat
