I've been playing the game fine and had no problems except the occaisional crash to the desktop - nothing too worrysome.

After my last desktop crash, I can't restart the game. I start it and get a black screen, then the program minimizes itself. Every time I try to maximize it, I just get a black screen, then minimized again. I have to use the task manager to end the program.

I tried renaming the AVI folder to no avail. I tried patching to 1.09 (from 1.08), again to no avail. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP 2.

What happened?

Have you rebooted since renaming AVI? If so and that hasn't helped, I recommend a complete uninstall (copy any valued save games elsewhere first), defrag of the hard disk, and reinstall (EU2 followed immediately by 1.09). Then rename the AVI dir again and run the game.

If you cannot load the save try starting a new campaign and see if that works.

Well, it took a complete uninstall to get me working again. I tried several things while waiting for a reply.

I did notice a Config file in the game folder (C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Europa Universalis II\Config.eu) that changes each time the game is run. I am assuming something got corrupted there. What is the function of this file and could you save a backup of it for this type of situation?

I accidently deleted my saved game (I saved the wrong folder - wasn't paying attention), so I don't know if there was anything in my previous game that caused it.

I didn't defrag since I just did that a short time ago and the Defrag Analysis showed that I was in good shape.

Was this a fluke or a known issue?

If you CTD, reboot the system before trying to play the game again.
That should help avoid the problem.

The problem occurred about an hour or so into a fresh boot. It was the first crash of any software since I turned it on that day.

No big deal, though. The re-installation didn't take long and if I hadn't deleted my saved game like a bonehead, I'd be cruising right along!

Thanks for all the help!

You could, although it's not known to get corrupt any more often than any other file under Windows :)

As the name implies it keeps configuration information, such as your message settings.
