Can't select army, game shuts down.

I bought the gold edition for EU:R, and the game loads just fine (though the loading is exasperatingly slow). However, when I start playing as Rome in 280 BC, the game shuts down when I try to select the one army you start with. I can select provinces, and sometimes other armies, but not the one Roman army. I bought the game from Amazon and can return it if it doesn't work, but I was looking for immediate suggestions. Is there maybe a patch that would fix the problem?

No, the game was developed on XP, that's actually better than Vista.
