I just got the game in the mail today, but I can't start it. As soon as I open the game, I get a CTD every time. I have tried renaming the avi folder to avi_back, but when I try to do so it says that access is denied and that I cannot rename it. I am running XP home edition SP 1, 768 MB RAM, P4 2.4 GHz processor, DirectX 9.0b, CK version 1.03b. I looked at the readme, and it doesn't seem that the problem is with the movie player. Any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Sorry for the late reply I have been on Vacation.

Why would you think it is not the Bink player, what leads you to belive that?
Since it is the Number 1 culprit by far.

I am more concered though that you are getting access violations while accessing your harddrive.

Please do try all of the following if possible.
Also run scan disk to see if you are having HD problems.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

I tried all three of those, and none of them seem to work. I will run scan disk, however, and see what happens with that. The reason that I don't think it's Bink is because this is not a hang as described in the readme, it is an immediate CTD.

Never having see the readme I don't know what it tells you but I assure you the Bink player can cause an imediate CTD.

If the scan disk does not report any errors then:

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Scan Disk did not report any errors, so here is the DirectX Diagnostic:

Well your display driver is a little out of date.

What publisher version do you have, their logo will be on the CD?

Also can you cut and paste the readme file here please anything to do with tech support like the part you said talked about the bink player.

I ordered the game from the online shop, the only logo on the CD is Paradox.

The readme is fairly short, just one note about Bink player:

Running the game Windows XP.

In some cases the Bink movie player used to play the intro movies may hang when starting the game under Windows XP. If the game seems to have crashed when starting it then open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Find and select Binkplay.exe under the Applications tab then press the End Task button. You may have to do this twice.

Did you try the updated driver?
