well. this is my last ditch cry for help. steam support left me in the dirt after they couldn't/wouldn't help and paradox don't seem to have any active staff members that axctually care about my problem.

THE PROBLEM- I go to my games tab on steam, select crusader kings two from the list and click play, the launcher loads up and everything looks fine and dandy. BUT when i click "start ck2" i get a debug error saying that "ck2.exe encountered a problem and needed to close etc etc....." music does play untill i click either "debug" or "close and then it crashes.

WHAT I'VE DONE-Validated files 6-7 times and deleted nessecary files whatever.
-re-installed entire game 5-6 times
- done some configuration and re-installation of microsoft visual c++ redistributable 2010
-on steams support reply, done some tweaking in the regedit area of my pc (unknown waters i admit, i'm a bit of a newbie at pc'ing)
-tried to throw my pc out of my bedroom window
-decided it was worth more in its entirety
-contacted paradox 4 days ago. who STILL hav't gotten back to me.

is there ANYONE out there who can help?....:angry::(

I've been having a similar problem, I start up my game from Steam and it goes to the "loading sounds" "loading graphics" menus then crashes before the Main Menu saying : "CK2 has stopped working" with no further information. I've also re-installed and made sure that all of my DirectX is up to date. I hadn't tried playing in about two weeks but have never had this problem in the past.

I checked my logs and these were the only ones that had anything in them :

error.txt
[sound.cpp:232]: Sound generic_click_04 not found.
[sound.cpp:232]: Sound generic_click_04 not found.
[sound.cpp:232]: Sound generic_click_04 not found.
[sound.cpp:232]: Sound generic_click_04 not found.
[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: gfx//coats_of_arms//dynasties.tga.

graphics.txt
[provincetemplate.cpp:250]: Province 0 has invalid origin
[eu3graphicalmap.cpp:1872]: Invalid port location for province 1, center at 136,215, port location at 126.000, 277.000

game.txt
[history.cpp:229]: Executing History from -1.1.1 to 2.1.1
[history.cpp:229]: Executing History from 2.1.1 to 1066.9.15

Please help, I love this game and I really want to use the new Ruler Designer but I can't play :(

Paradox do have dedicated support staff, but like most people they don't work weekends. 4 days ago includes 2 weekend days ... anyway let's see what we can find out here.

please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the "Sound devices" section for brevity), settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

Those "errors" are normal and nothing to do with your problem. If you've played in the past on this same machine there's no known reason why ot wouldn't start up now. Try a full clean reinstall: uninstall the game from Steam and move any valued save games elsewhere. Manually delete the CK2 directories from under the Steam AND MyDocuments folders, now reinstall the game via Steam.

well, i'm new to pc'ing. so....i have pressed start and selected "run" (i'm using windows xp) and typed dxdiag. all the information has came up and i have now saved the lot into a notepad file. is that what you wanted? because at this stage in the process i'm clueless lol. so in essence i'm asking do i copy and paste the entire file (minus everything after "sound"??.......to save myself lost time thats what i'm going to do anyways so please bear with me if i get it wrong

I actually moved to a new PC but it's more powerful and has better a better graphics card, sound card, etc. I have re-installed a few times but this time I manually made sure all the folders were deleted. Still no luck. I see that people are posting their dxdiag on here so maybe that'll help?

P.S. thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to help me with this, means a lot to me. And sorry to the OP, didn't mean to hijack but I'm sure you can relate to how frustrating this is and how hopeless it seems at times lol

well, i'm new to pc'ing. so....i have pressed start and selected "run" (i'm using windows xp) and typed dxdiag. all the information has came up and i have now saved the lot into a notepad file. is that what you wanted? because at this stage in the process i'm clueless lol. so in essence i'm asking do i copy and paste the entire file (minus everything after "sound"??.......to save myself lost time thats what i'm going to do anyways so please bear with me if i get it wrong
<snip>
Hope you maike sense of this lol. Thnx for the help anyways =)
That was part of what I was asking for, and all looks fine. Can you please post the CK2 logs files I asked for, they will be under CK2 in your MyDocuments folder.

I actually moved to a new PC but it's more powerful and has better a better graphics card, sound card, etc. I have re-installed a few times but this time I manually made sure all the folders were deleted. Still no luck. I see that people are posting their dxdiag on here so maybe that'll help?
You may have the HDMI problem. Can you swap to an old VGA cable for your video, and see if that helps? If it does not, please post your CK2 log files, as I asked for before.
P.S. thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to help me with this, means a lot to me. And sorry to the OP, didn't mean to hijack but I'm sure you can relate to how frustrating this is and how hopeless it seems at times lol
Fine, but adding your post to someone else's thread doesn't speed up you getting help, nor does it relieve your frustration and hopelessness. All it does it make for a confusing thread, which is probably now trying to deal with two separate issues in alternating posts. It is always best to start your own fresh thread, for the future.

i looked at the log files and they were all blank except this one ("system")

as an afterthought i checked my screens current resolution and its the same as in this log file.

I don't have a VGA cable but my laptop should be repaired next week and I'll be able to play on that.

Here's my log files again if that helps anything...

My bad, the only forum I've really posted on consistently gets mad at people for creating too many threads lol next time I'll start my own.

Can you perhaps borrow one from a neighbour or relative? It's just as a test and would only be for a few minutes.

It was really your settings.txt I was after. Your dxdiag shows:
Current Mode: 1280 x 720 (32 bit) (60Hz)
If you are trying to use that res in-game then the game will not work, as 768 is the minimum y res. Try editing settings.txt to say 1024x768 .

So you have no settings.txt in the MyDocuments CK2 folder?

One oddity I notice is your video driver. In your dxdiag.txt above it says:
Driver Date/Size: 5/3/2012 16:30:58, 305664 bytes
which is to say the 3rd of May, only a week ago. Yet on the AMD site the latest driver I see for that video card is http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_xp-32.aspx which is dated 25th April ... where did you get the video driver you are using? You could roll back to that one I just posted, or even an earlier one - their older drivers are listed here http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx

tried installing new drivers to no avail. i'm starting to wonder if its something to do with the resolution its starting to execute in? although it says its all good, might it be trying to start in an alltogether different resolution that my screen can't support? i mean the music has no difficulty playing when i start the game and even sometimes a black screen appears before it dies (but thats very rare).

and i the only text files i have in my ck2 log folder (in my documents not the steam folder) are- ai (blank), error (blank), game (blank) graphics (blank) memory (blank) message (blank) random (blank) setup (blank) system (the information above) text (blank) time (blank).

tried installing new drivers to no avail.
I was trying to get you to try old drivers, not new ones - where did you find ones newer than the one you had already? It was only a week old.

Settings.txt is not in the CK2/logs/ directory but one step above that, in the CK2 folder itself.

my mistake lol. well there is no settins.txt file anywhere i can see. and i installed the older type drivers i just didnt make it clear in that post. i installed the drivers from the links you posted.

just searched every ck2 file on the pc, no settings.txt anywhere. is that the problem?

I am heading to work but I'll ask around when I get back. Here is my settings.txt in the meantime, looks like the screen is already set to 1280 x 768:

It could be an indicator of a problem. The game creates one as it runs up, if it doesn't find one there already. So either your installation is bad, or the game is failing so early in the initialisation process it doesn't even get that far. It should be in C:\Users\<name>\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II, along with directories gfx, logs, save games, screenshots.

Let's try skipping the Launcher and Steam and run the game directly. Navigate to your Steam folder and go to steamapps/common/ckii , you'll see a file ck2.exe - double-click on that directly. Please report back exactly what happens, all errors that occur, and whether a settings.txt now gets created.

If you get exactly the same problem, I'm going to ask you to do a full clean reinstall - I know you've done reinstalls already, but indulge me please. uninstall the game from Steam. Manually delete the CK2 directories from under the Steam AND the MyDocuments folders (that is, the two locations I've listed above), now reinstall the game via Steam; when done run the Steam Verify just to make sure all game files came down OK.

I am heading to work but I'll ask around when I get back. Here is my settings.txt in the meantime, looks like the screen is already set to 1280 x 768:
Can you try setting your desktop to 1024x768, just as a test? But I'm expecting the VGA cable to do it for you (until Paradox can fix that problem).

okay had a look at the file path you requested. no settings.txt, so it hasnt made one. found the ck2.exe and i get exactly the same thing "ck2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close, sorry for any inconvenience caused etc"......im going to a party now so il re-install it when i come in cya soon
