In this time period could most rulers only truly control land and vassals they could visit sometimes(Charlemagne constantly visited different parts of his empire to keep them in check).

When Sweden owns land in Spain, England, Scandinavia and the Maghreb is it just not realistic that the ruler can frequently visit those lands and keep them in check. Even when he has a sea connection with those lands. They would be his in name only and would eventually become independent.

Because a ruler has only a limited amount of time should he choice which lands to focus on, the others should drift towards independence. Maybe should each isolated overseas holding cost x domain to control, time spend on overseas holdings is not spend on your own domain. Distance should determinate the domain cost.

I can’t agree more. On the Viking invasion of England they became their own thing, they weren’t vassals of Jarls in Scandinavia. If you conquer something overseas you should have to choose between ruling the new land and giving you heir full control of the homeland and losing the claim to the new land, or stay home and send a family member to rule the new land, independently but with an alliance.
