March 25th, 1944:
President Gomez stood silently on the balcony of his office facing the crowds of screaming and cheering people below. This was a time of celebration and happiness.
Gomez raised his hand, immediately the crowd hushed and an eerie silence descended across the city. Gomez cleared his throat and spoke into a, his voice magnified to be heard by all the people.
"Citizens of Cuba, today is a day that no one shall soon forget. Today is a day to be proud in ourselves and our country. Today we must put aside the weapons of war and embrace the spirit of peace. The brave sacrifices of our young, valiant men shall not be in vain...and I will try to my fullest extent to make sure that their sacrifices will not be forgotten in the sands of time."
Gomez paused, looking across the gathered crowd, "For years I have worked to see us reach this day, but it would never have been, if not for the loyalty and dedication of every Cuban citizen. A new power has arisen from the ashes of war, Cuba, the Caribean Empire!"
Gomez stepped back and the crowd erupted into applause and cheers of jubillation. Gomez smiled, lit a cigar and took a long drag from it. Exhaling the smoke, he looked over the glistening city of Havana, remembering all that had happened in these last 8 years.
Without saying another word, President Gomez of Cuba slowly turned and entered his office. The door quietly shut behind him.
