The Seleucid War, 636-643
March 643
It was little more then a month after the peace was made. Abbar Barcid, the current High General, was finally back in Carthage, after being away for almost 7 years. The war had been the bloodiest and the longest in the history of the Empire.
No wonder, Abbar thought. They were fighting the second biggest empire in the world. In the end, Carthage won, but the losses of lives had been horrendous. Nearly 400 000 subjects of Carthage lost their lives in the battles with Seleucids. Well, and in the battles in Gaul. Yes, the Helvetii had assassinated one of Carthage's governors. They had to be punished. 60 000 Carthagian soldiers crossed to Gaul and showed Helvetii their place. Not total annihilation though, but the Helvetii lost most of their conquest and new colonies.
The results of the Gallic War
After that, Macedonia as well. They decided to take back what was theirs. Of course, they chose a very bad moment to do it. Right after the Gallic War, when one army was marching to south, one army just finished hunting rebels in the northern provinces of Carthage and one army just sent to Greece as reinforcements. Macedonia was crushed. Well, not totally, for the main war was with Seleucids and the troops were badly needed in main front. So after forcing Macedonians to give up Thrace, Carthage made peace.
The result of Another Macedonian War
But these were minor wars, with not much importance. Only being there to divert some troops from the main battlefield.
It was back in November 636, when the enemy had declared war. But in the beginning of the year, Carthage finally instituted cataphracts as their cavalry type and that had turned the nation into chaos. The idea of people riding fully armoured horses and being fully armoured themselves was responded with shock by the main populace, causing the loss of stability. Increasing it took for the first time more money then the nation actually had.
Now, back to war. In the beginning, war was fought in South, Judea and Sinai being the main battlegrounds. Carthage had about 80 000 men in the provinces nearby and started recruitment of 30 000 light-infantry only assault army. Still, that wasn't enough. Seleucids forced Carthage back to Alexandria and took Sinai. By then end of 638, the war was not going too well in south.
But by then, the fleet did what they do best- the sunk the Seleucid fleet, and the fleet of Pontus. That allowed Carthage to start sending troops from Greece over to Asia Minor. Plus, most of Seleucid and Pontic troops were in the south, so the land was free to take. 60 000 Carthagians crossed the Aegean Sea and first, hit Pontus. In July 639, Pontus was out of the picture, with Carthage taking Paphlagonia and gaining her first foothold in Asia Minor. From there, forces of Carthage in Asia Minor turned their attention to Seleucids.
And that's Pontus out of the picture
Same time, in the end of 639, Carthage had gathered enough strength down South to push the offensive. The biggest battle yet seen, where Carthage fielded over 80 000 soldiers, in 5 armies, pushed back the Seleucid offensive and marched on. Then, after the battle of Judea, the huge army split. Some stayed behind to siege the province, others marched on to neighbouring provinces. In South, the scales had turned to favour the Carthage.
One of the biggest battles in the war. I kinda forgot to take the screenie where the same amount of Carthaginians fights about 40 000 Seleucids.
The battle in Asia Minor worked the same- with more and more troops being sent to the peninsula, the Seleucids were finally defeated. By the end of the war, 6 armies with 120 000 men total were in Asia Minor alone and about the same number marching from the South.
But in the beginning of 643, Carthage was becoming weary of the war as well. Minor revolts starting from everywhere forced the nation to stop her war and seek out the peace with the Seleucids. In the end, Carthage gained Bithynia and Pergamon from the war. Everyone knew this was just the beginning and neither empire would not be pleased with the outcome.
The peace score by the end of the war
More money for Carthage. Oh, the income is about 60 gold per month
