I am looking to find a group for MP. I have only played maybe a half-dozen SP games to various stages of completion, and have not played Germany, UK, or SU at all yet.

I would REALLY prefer people about my experience level, for two reasons: (1) So I don't get slaughtered in a minimal amount of time, and (2) I don't piss anyone off doing something stupid or moving a little to slow.

When:
I would probably only be able to play once a week (Sat. or Sun) and would need to find people able to commit to no more commitment :D . I do need to, eh, 'balance' some other commitments. Open to when to start, but would like to get at least five players first and then discuss the format and ground rules.

Connection:
I am dial-up, which means no hosting :( . I understand that this is not a terrible problem under 'normal' speed or less and with a fast host. Correct me if I am wrong and I (and others) will be miserable. DSL is not far in the future for my connection, but not yet.

Players:
Casual, play the game for fun, not necessarily to win at any cost. Willing to discuss house rules and willing to take bathroom and food breaks occassionally :) . Maybe 4 - 6 hours sessions, with breaks? Open to whatever is popular. Also, I am looking for fairly new players who do not have all the events and what they cause memorized :D .

If there is any interest, post here and let me know.....

Sounds good to me. I am in at similar situation (meaning wife and kids duties take priority), but would really like to delve into the MP world. I have only played SP in the past and think that I'm missing something by not playing against someone other than the (ever improving) AI. I can play on Saturday or Sunday (I am in the US Eastern Std Time Zone, Pittsburgh to be exact). Let me know if you are still interested and hopefully with others, we can get something scheduled for this weekend.

Hi !
I am interested in joining your game. I have try a couple of times playing online, but couldnt find a group so far. I have DSL. And i am on eastern time.
I can only garanteed my presence on sundays evening tho.:p

Iksender, we need to start a Canadian game someday. :D

I could host

I have access to a 4mb fiber connection. I host for a regular Tuesday/Sunday night group already. If there are enough people and everyone is willing to play by some houserules, I'd be willing to host another Sunday game. The session would have to be completed by on 9pm est as that is when my next game would start.

That would be great. Slightly Off-Topic, where can I look in the system to find out the specifics of my internet connection? I have cable internet, and just wanted to confirm my speed.

Thanks.

Hey everybody. Just got off the road today and am dead tired, but I will try to get back to y'all in the morning more directly and see what we have so far.

I saw there was a forum thread regarding MP ground rules. If you know why/why not some should be included, or additional rules that should be considered, keep them in mind. I am thinking we will not start this weekend, but kind of set the game up (players/countries and rules, etc) during this coming week, and maybe start the week (weekend) after.

I will also try to join a MP game to see if my dial up can handle it :( .

So far....

..I have the following people interested - let me know if this omitted anybody:

6 to 9 EST Sundays
Mad Mac
Iksender (out for the 9th)
Webhop
DAW
Sneaky Ivan
TrainWreck
Ihategfafb
Thrdarmy44
Jxa536
Willard

6 sounds like a good (minimum) number, if we can get everybody on-board. First question is timing. Saturday or Sunday daytime works best for me, but other times may work, too. This thread could get really long trying to discuss this through posts, though. Either post here or email me (Trainwreck20 'at' yahoo.com) what times you can play, and be as specific as you can. This is first, becuase there may be some incompatibilities and we may need to find more players. I will edit and add to this post. Anybody else feel free to respond...we haven't closed anything!a

The connection I use eliminated lag for the dialup player in my regular group. There is still the occasional CTD but that is part of MP play. I am only available to host Sunday evening prior to 9pm EST. I can play other times but will only host on Sunday between 3pm-9pm EST.

I can submit the houserules my regular group plays by if you wish. They prohibit several exploits and result in some very fine games. We recently added a provision to allow someone to call for a pause should their troops get sent on one of those retarded forward retreats the AI likes to perform. The player provides some quick info and says where he wants the units to be redirected. We exit the game, I edit the save file and we hop back in. Takes 2-4 minutes. This saves the game from being destroyed by someone losing 30+ divisions because the AI retreated them to a certain death province.

Well, maybe it is good to have at least one experienced player :p I have no clue on what issues come up or how to fix them...and have yet to edit any saved files.

And yes, I would be interested in the rules that y'all have. I have also looked through the DEG rules, and some of them may be useful (some may not....). I kind of like the transport vs. landing craft rule that was discussed there. Anybody use it yet in a MP game?

Sunday Nov 2nd 3PM

If DAW is available why not try a game start on Sunday. He has the best connection speed and most experience. 3PM to 9PM would work for me and could become a standard time where those that are interested can go online. If necessary I can act as a back up host if DAW can't make it or for a second game if we get alot of players.

I'd even be willing to forgo watching my vaunted Steelers on Sunday to get a game in. In addition, I went to the website that jgbaxter referred to in his link above for the broadband stats. I had a download of 251 kbps and an upload of 241 kbps. Slower than I thought it would be, but if its enough to host, I can always act as a backup.

I wasn't suggesting we play a 6 hour session, that long of a session may severely limit your chances of obtaining the needed 6-8 regular players. Consider a 3-4 hour session, such as 5p-9p or 6p-9p.

You should probably get your list of players together and then during this week we'll pick sides and work out the house rules.

6 - 9 EST sounds like the most promising time. I think 3 hours ought to work out about right, we can try it and find out. I am thinking a November 9 game, as well, not a November 2 (or, at least, I cannot play Nov 2). Let me know what y'all think of the time/timing.

November 9th Sounds Great

Sunday from 6 PM to 9 PM sure works for me. Can we make this a standard meeting time going for forward? What version are we going to play 1.05 or 1.05C? How about a name for our group, like "Laidback US Group". okay I admit it's a dig on the DEG.

Other thoughts anyone?

A standard meeting on Sundays 6p-9p est. should be fine. We should be playing 1.05c. I'll wait until Monday to start posting what I think the house rules should be. We will want 8 players if we can get them. This will put 4 on a side and allow those running minors to take over a major on the nights when someone doesn't show up.

This is TrainWreck's group. I have strong feelings about what rules make the game balanced and play out really well but I know that TrainWreck has to approve my suggestions.

As for a name: Laidback and Group is ok, don't think we should make ourselves US exclusive ( I understand what you were getting at though). :)
