Besides through random events, how do COTs form, or rather, what criteria are there for one to form? Playing EU several times, I've only seen one new COT form different from the start of the game: Anglia forming as a COT in the 1500's.

Is it random? or does a province have to reach a certain point? can you manipulate things so that a COT will form in one of your provinces?

thanks

I beleive that most, such as the Anglia one is random, but i think that if u create a colony in a certain area then probably a CoT will form there.

2 have happened to me in every game i played as those nations. North America and a colony i started in far east Russia.

(hehe 1400+ CoT with me as Russia the sole merchant/monopoly):D

Anglia forms every game I've ever been in. The colonial ones form basically if you get there first with the most, i.e. if you get enough colonies in a certain area before the other colonial powers it will tend to form in your colony. Certain provinces have more predilection to form COTs than other such as Cochin in India, and Singapore as examples. Usually you get 2 or 3 in North America.

New CoT's form when a colony is formed within an area of mostly TPs. This new CoT could "steal" maybe just 3 provinces or it can "steal" a whole lot more.
Having a colony in the area helps a lot in "winning" a CoT. Now last night I has a level 1..yes 1 turn into a CoT. It was Table in South Africa. Although I had most of Africa as it was it took a couple from France. The bigger the colony the better chances , but as I said it dosent nessesarily have to be at least a level 7 colony.

Well, I've been playing as Portugal this game (1530's), and so far I saw one CoT for Spain form in South America, I've had one CoT form for me in South Africa, one formed right after I took a territory from the Aztecs, and one soon after I colonized a port in Russia (note that the one in Russia gave me a huge amount of trade. I'm not sure that answers any questions, but from the games I've played, getting to (and colonizing) a new location first really helps, expecially distant ones. (Same thing happened when I played Russia when I got to the other side--I always try to get there fast now because I'll get a nice amount of trade (like 700+) and as long as my maps stay my maps, I won't have much (or any) competition)

Just curious, when does Anglia COT form? I haven't really gotten too far in the game (only up to about 1570) because I keep starting new games, and I haven't seen it form yet.

I was playing Austria and had acquired some maps by trading information with people. I had just built a shipyard, and noticed I had a settler, and could see a territory in Indonesia, so I put down a colony there and it got the CoT within a short time. Later on, when I had better maps, I noticed that Portugal had put down zero colonies -- all they had put down were trading posts -- so I got to suck up all the trade from the region without doing anything.

these CoTs are kinda confusing. I think they're pretty random on where they pop up most of the time.

As Spain I had a CoT popup in Yukon in 2 games (1 while it was a level 2 colony).

As Turkey, I was concentrating on the Indian Subcont'nt when a new and VERY rich CoT pops up in the Southern most (Cochin maybe) prove'nc in India - the only Spanish colony in the entire Far East - of course the Spanish are refusing to allow me trade at any of their CoTs (methinks a war is in order) - that new CoT makes 3 for India.

Also seen an English CT in Biloxi and a French in S.Africa and another French in N.Amer. Very random it seems.
