I just downloaded Hearts of Iron 2 (and DD/Arm) from Gamersgate. I have a 1680x1050 monitor. On other games, I've had to modify the settings TXT file so that the game accommodates the screen. I successfully updated both EU3 and EU: Rome that way.

However, when I go into the HoI folders, I don't have any settings file in TXT format. Instead, I see a settings.cfg file that I can't open.

What do I need to do so the game runs on my monitor correctly? Thanks.

Thanks for the information.

I am extremely reluctant to try the Lord Ederon Hexa Hack because of the warnings. I am not very tech savvy and don't want it to explode on me. I would need a bit more information about whether it has problems before I attempt it.

I tried to play in Windowed mode, and it fails. I change the color to 16 bit and then modified properties as coreymas' link advised. I did get the game to start inside a window, but when I selected SINGLE GAME, I had a critical failure.

ERROR: (Scenarioinfo: Unexpected field) UES = ('Line = 9 file = scenarios/0_Global_war.eug ---

It then asks me if I want to continue and gives me the options to Abort, Retry, or Ignore, but all of them lead to kicking me out and ending the game.

Can anyone advise a next step?

I think this is an extremely silly problem to have to deal with. Being able to play the game on your monitor seems to be a very fundamental issue, and I'm a bit peeved there isn't an official solution. There was no indication this would be an obstacle when I bought the game.

Thanks for everyone's help so far.
