Seriously though, until 2012 you're going to get 101 threads a week telling you how to program every aspect of the game. I'd say feel free to ignore these but I think you already know that
It would be pretty neat, if we did have location based characters, if they were represented on the map. Kind of like the Total War games (I'm thinking of Shogun 1 and Medieval 1, the 2D ones, specifically). Kind of doubt that's something the current engine can support, though.
