None, as far as I can tell.

The third level is difficult. It took me quite a few tries. My advice is to build a hall of lords north of the castle and recruit lords right away. Blademasters are great, if you have one. Putting the hall of lords there means your lords will defend against the minotaur attacks from the north without prompting. This will give you breathing room to build up the rest of your heroes and clear out the map. Rebuilding the towers in the southeast first is the easiest.

I found that level pretty easy once I gave up on getting all of the towers- I'm stuck on the level where you have to destroy four 50k towers packed close to one another on a narrow isthmus. I threw literally 30 high level heroes at it with a special 'invincibility' buff and lost pretty much all of them. It took close to an hour to prepare for that one assault. Crazy.

So is a hall of lords generally the first one to build? I've been building rangers or clerics first, depending on if it was animals or skeletons I'll be fighting first
Depends on the quest. A blademaster or paladin over level 6 can usually singlehandedly take on a wave of monsters that would wipe out a fledgling force of regular heroes. If you have having trouble surviving the first major assault on your palace, then you might have better luck starting with the hall of heroes.

Thanks, that helps some. I built the HoL and bought a ranger, figuring he'd be best against the baby dragons, or snakes or whatever they're called.
And he is. When he fights. Almost always he stupidly runs off and gathers those treasure chests to the southeast and disreguards the fight to the death back at the castle.
I've tried putting all my money into defending the castle I'm too poor in the beginning and he ignores it. (moral: never trust a ranger. this probably applies to thieves/rogues too, i'd think)

So what are the opening moves for the dragon?
