It was a dodgy subject, the Pope had actually given his banner to William the Bastard to signify the crusade against the errant Saxons, who though were Christian, weren't as catholic as the Pope would have liked them to be..

See Ian Walker's excellent book "Harold, The Last English King" for an interesting angle on exactly how far the Pope really backed William....

Great to see another update, albeit far too short for your demanding audience. Still I know you have had other far more important matters to attend to

The fact that the English Church didn't send any money to Rome and William promised all sorts of goodies, had nothing to do with it? In the event, Rome got a lot less than they'd been promised, but at least got something. Rome had a similar deal with Tancred in southern Italy and got similarly stitched.

That was sort of implied, tough luck on the Pope, shouldn't have gone sticking his nose in on temporal matters. Land is for the Princes of the World :D

I'll have to check it out next time I'm in Waterstones :D

Very nice aquiring Derby and some cash. Always nice when loyalty pays off. So whats next for our prospering Lord?

As usual, the many words you find to explain a simple event like the building of a library impress me. Well done.

Ah, this chronicle-style of writing brings me back to a nice afternoon I spent with the Swedish Erikskrönikan... Marvellous reading, one gets the feeling that it's almost genuine.

Keep the good work up.

Folks, I have some bad news. I have spent the last week trying to find a way to avoid a CTD I keep running into, but with no success. I am therefore afraid that I will have to abandon this AAR. Which rather pains me but if they game won't work...

No idea if I will start up another project or not at this time.

A sad turn of events indeed. :(

If its not too much to ask, could we at least get a small closing chapter to end it? It seems such a shame to let this well done AAR just be cut off like that.

Mmm, I will have a look at my notes and see what I can rustle up.

Really sorry to hear that. It amazes me how much stuff like that seems to happen to writers on this thread. I'll just keep knocking on wood that it hasn't, and wont, happen to me. I'll look foward to it when you do start a new project.

Oh, that is sad news indeed, stnylan. If anything, it allows time to be spent on France (or perhaps that EUIII AAR we discussed.)

I was very much enjoying this. Your chronicle style is always a pleasure to read.
