You mean like paying ransoms??

And if so, would that also be possible for nobels when they're captured by the enemy (which was common practice)...

In the latest dev. update from Sergei there is mentioned a menu option for ransoming... ;)

To the original question: Since I doubt the cities themself won't be on the map I'm not sure. Many of the larger cities controlled large areas around the city, but enough to fill a province?

Since each province has a ratio between merchant burgouise, nobility, clergy and peasants I'd guess you could favour one of these groups thoug...

Yea...after the black plauge this did happen. A group of merchants or whatnot would ask for freedom from their overlord in exchange for a lot of cash. This was useful for finacially strapped rulers.
