New version 1.25

New version, 1.25
Like I said I am away until the end of august, but have managed to piece together a new version. New features include:

Save as box to save your gedcom file to where ever you want it. Default entry works just like current version, in same place as save file with same name but different extension.

Program should try to read your CK directory from the registry (read only so can’t change anything in there). If it can’t find it due to you having a different language or not having CK installed, it will fall back on the old method of asking you to select it and saving it in setup.ini

Attributes are now loaded and can be saved in the notes. Use the options menu as usual.

Colour Sets! Since I’m using this project to teach myself to program, I started messing about with graphical options. You can now set the colours of the program under Tools-> Colours. There are a couple of built in colour sets plus you can go into the colour set creator and make your own, which can be saved and loaded later (yes this is a pretty useless feature but it doesn’t take up significantly more space, and if you leave it alone it will act just like the current version.)

New cheesy ‘About’ window

You can now export an ancestor list using the radio buttons next to the Create File button. The descendent list is the same as in previous versions, but the ancestor list lets you export all ancestors of a given character. You can use the generations textbox to specify how many generations to go back. All normal options work as usual for this, except the export only male or only female.

The main thing I would like to get feedback on is what options you’d like to see for the ancestor list. The obvious one is export fathers side only or mothers side only but how exactly would be the best way to do this? Export only your father, then only his father, then only his father etc. or export only your father, then carry on as normal exporting all of his ancestors? Or export only fathers for a number of generations, then start exporting all ancestors?

Also if anyone has other ideas to improve it let me know. Because I'm away I won't be able to respond quickly to questions etc. but I will do eventually.

Thanks for this update, I'll test it in a minute.

One thing I would like to see implemented is the use of a see across feature (think Gedcom calls it an alias, but I havnt checked it out), what I mean is, if distant cousins marry, as they inevitably do in a few generations, I dont want to see them linked up with lines of descent messing up the chart, i'd rather the man and the woman entries were shown in their normal placs with duplicates of their spouces saying see across, to stop this duplication passing on to the next generation, limit the descendents to the male line.

I did get a bug where clicking on preview got a "property does not exist error" but I can't reproduce it.

You can also get overflow error, which you should remind people of.

That sounds like a really good idea, i didnt know you could do that and it would certainly make trees more viewable. As it is, I probably won't be able to work on it for a while, but its next in line I would say.

Which one is the overflow error? is that when you enter a none valid colour in the text box? if so, yeah, i completely forgot to do error handling of any kind on that (Doh!) so it will crash when you do that. The colours bit in general is the most buggy part of the program, but since its not vital to the programs functioning it will not be a top priority.

I meant when the numbers are too big to fit in the colour value. You should remind people that they can't put values over 217486 (or whatever) into the colour box. But yeah, it doesn't really matter much about this part.

Never mind. I tried it again and it worked fine. Pretty cool! I didn't do anything different than last time I attempted to use it. I wonder what's the problem?

It is great feature, but is there something that keeps you away from adding other_families_expansion? I mean I would like see my wife's and mine ancestors in one huge tree.

It would probably be quite hard...

I keep having an error where, at the end of making the file, it throws up runtime error '380': property does not exist. The file works fine though. I'm assuming it happens when you try to set the label to say "All done!", but it usually works OK.

Use the other thread ;)

GenoPro, Heredis etc will open these files. Basically any family tree program. There are laods on the internet like these free.
