Can confirm this bug as I experienced it today. It's actually fairly detrimental and makes some of the perks you can take ineffective. Things like Firm Hand (Prestige bonus from dread), Dynasty of Many Crowns, etc. all seem to be effected.

To elaborate, let's take two situations:

Situation #1

Prestige Gain +5
Prestige Loss -4
Prestige Bonus Modifier +20%

I will gain 2 prestige a tick ( (5*1.20) -4). Working as intended.

Situation #2

Prestige Gain +5
Prestige Loss -5
Prestige Bonus Modifier +20%

I will gain 0 prestige per tick in the current version of the game due to it disabling the modifiers.
I believe I should be gaining 1 ( (5*1.20) -5).

Still appears to be an issue in 1.3.1. Found no other mentions on the bug forum, so necro'd this old thread. Neither Firm Hand nor Praetorian Guard does anything when the end result is negative. I reckon the perks should be used as posted above - add to the gain, and then, after that, substract the loss. Of course it might be as intended, but it feels like a bug.

In addition to this - even if you DO get the Prestige Gain to be positive - by raiding - (as it shows at the top of the screen) the tooltip still shows as negative. Below: screenshot with negative prestige gain; screenshot with positive prestige gain but same tooltip that shows negative.

Exit -> Reload or waiting for the next monthly tick does not change it.

Savegame available if needed.

Hey everyone!

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

A save where the issue is present would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Negativenoperks - load to see situation with negative prestige gain and 2 Majesty focus perks not doing anything
Negativebutpositive - load to see situation where top screen says gain but tooltip still shows negative (and no mention of perks either)

This bug really kills Tribal playing - I cannot go to war (negative prestige income) without losing my perks that I build a character around. MORE IMPORTANTLY - this has been "confirmed" for 2 years and never fixed. I truly love this game - but it is slipping further and further away from something worth investing time in. Every new campaign I start ends not in a fun experience, but in bugs (always waiting for the next build when *it* will be fixed and *it* never is. I take the time to log issues (free QA) and no responses. Why do it?

Ouch. Didn't know about that so far, but now explains why it often feels so hard to get out of a "debt" here. The OP was very gentle with the "bug pain rating here" - for me this ranks more at 7 than 3 and it is indeed frustrating that this bug apparently hasn't been solved.

BTW, has anyone examined if this applies to Gold as well? I'm asking since I sometimes has the impression that income greatly shifts in the moment you get in or out of debt.

That one's probably because of Men-at-Arms. They stop regenerating their numbers when you're in debt. As soon as you get out of debt, they start recruiting again (which costs a lot of gold), so your income goes negative.

Also please fix the confusing things on prestige.
In the save file <Prestige calculation>, there is some discrepancy. (between +0.54 and -1.74 on screenshot)
More weird thing is that, if I disband army, +0.54 turns into -1.74.
I have no idea what is happening but all these make situations very confusing.
The pain point above is 3, but I'd like to give 5 or 6.
