Short summary of your issue
CTD Upon Loading pre-1.3 Saves

Game Version
1.3

What OS are you playing on?
Windows

What platform are you using?
Steam

Do you have mods enabled?
No

Have you tried verifying your game files (Steam only)?
Yes

How much "pain" is this causing you?
9

Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
I updated to the latest 1.3 version of the game which just came out in the last hour or so. It was explained in the comments under the official patch notes that saves from previous versions would be compatible. I attempted to load a few of my saves from a version prior to 1.3, but each time I click the load button, the game crashes to desktop almost immediately, briefly displaying the loading screen before it does, but never successfully loading into the game.

Please explain how to reproduce the issue
1. Save a game with a version prior to the 1.3 update.
2. Update the game to 1.3.
3. Attempt to load that pre-1.3 save.

Is there anything else you think could help us identify/replicate the issue?
I know that there was a map update which significantly effects the counties and baronies of Ireland, Scotland and Scandinavia. I indirectly rule all of these regions in my save. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I have attached a save game
Yes

Same issue for me. Ironman save from v1.2.2 not loading and instead CTD.
Playing out of Xbox for PC and apparently no way of reverting to a previous version of the game.
Quite poor this was not caught in testing and do I hope it gets fixed soon.

I also cannot submit the crash report in the built in tool (might be a firewall issue), so I am attaching the logs here (the save game itself is 59MB so will not be uploading that).

Edit: Also noticed that in the Load Game menu, if I untick 'Show Invalid Savegames', then my save game disappears.

same issue. games started in 1.2 open no problem, but older games COD without exception.

this applies both to 1.1 games that i have since then saved in 1.2 (that's the first attached save, the one with the passing of High King Brian, actually a carried over 1.1.3 tutorial game that i had played up to 1.2.2) and to saves that i made months ago and never opened since (the other save is a 1.0.3 start game from back then in the fall, which i was keeping for possible future use because the 1.0.3 starting setup made half of the Byzantine doux gay or bisexual and that seemed like a fun environment to play). attaching several crash logs too.

My game crashes when loading. My save is 1.2.2, game version is 1.3.0.

Description of the error the same as OP's. To be precise: my game crashes before showing the map (I see the loading screen, a new tip), but there are the sounds indicating that it loaded.

Paradox Crash Reporter is alson broken
I see it is confirmed, but I am having the same issues. Loads almost all the way, first initial sound that it is almost loaded, crashes before map is revealed. Was also 1.2.2. Couldn't send crash report as it did not work either. Reverted back to 1.2.2 and working as expected.

I am having the same issue here . My game crashes every time when I try to load a old save . Sure I can always revert back to version 1.2.2 , but the problem is the new DLC features are only available for the newest version of the game . I wanted ( still hope I can after everything is fixed) to have the all the new Viking experiences with my perfect Viking characters from my pre-1.3 Viking campaign , that's why I paid for the new DLC . I was not told that I had to start a new save for it before getting the new DLC

My friend just told me that she can load her old saves in 1.3 perfectly fine . I know my question may sound silly but is this issue regional ... ? because the only difference between us is that i am in Europe and she is in China ...

Sometimes it works, sometimes it crashes. One of the guys here said that one of his saves crashes, the other doesn't.
So it could depend on what land you hold (as there where changes in that), or for any other reason. The devs need to check that.

To add another one to the queue.

Crashes when loading the save.
And the crash reporter ... crashes as well.

So I will upload my files.

it doesnt matter, the dev team is not even going to try to fix it anyway. That Andrew guy from the tech team claimed that this issue is permanent , and the reason they used when deleting my comment basically confirmed it . Instead of trying to fix the issues they caused , they just give silly excuses like 'old saves becoming inaccessible after a big patch is normal '. I am just gonna wait and see whether some modders are going to release mods to fix this issue . if not , I can always unistanll the game and stop wasting my time (and money ) on it , who's to say they are not going to ruin my game again with next patch or next dlc . Anyway sorry for my rant . I hope you enjoy your game but mine is certainly ruined by paradox and it's new patch

I have two save files that I know were last played in version 1.2.2 with the same mod setup (only two music mods).

The first save file (Robertine) loads fine in 1.3. This save file was created in the 1.2.2 version of the game.

The second save file (di Lucca) crashes almost immediately on attempting to load it. This save file was originally created on version 1.0.3; it's a game that I only play a few hours a week while streaming for some friends, so it progresses pretty slowly. I never noticed any issues when playing this ongoing game on any of the subsequent versions up to and including 1.2.2.

The crash folder is for the crashing save.
I've just noticed that, in my crash folder, the "last_save.ck3" is not the save file that crashes when I try to load it - it's the save file for the other campaign, i.e. the save file that works correctly. Is this the expected behaviour?

I'm beginning to think that this isn't a map-update issue; the stack trace in exception.txt in my crash folders says that the crash was in a function call to:
Code:
  1    ck3.exe                  RemoveDlcLockedRules (game_rules.cpp: 12)
  2    ck3.exe                  CGameRuleInstance::AddMissingSettings (game_rules.cpp: 192)
  3    ck3.exe                  CGameRuleInstance::ReadMember (game_rules.cpp: 229)
  4    ck3.exe                  CPersistent::Read (persistent.cpp: 12)
  5    ck3.exe                  CGameState::ReadMember (gamestate.cpp: 1149)

Which really sounds like something that's reading the game rules that are in effect in the save, not something that would have anything to do with provinces and the map.

I also noticed that the patch notes for 1.3 have an entry:
  • The game now handles transitioning between updated map setups in a smoother way, this should make it easier to keep save compatibility between different versions, and makes it easier to update for example map mods
So the devs were actually intending to make map changes less likely to create save compatibility issues.

I noticed that too, and in combination with the devs saying in the comments under the patch notes that it would indeed be possible to continue your game (albeit with a different haircut), it seems like that the intention here is that map updates should no longer break old saves. I will be interesting to see what the actual issue is that's causing the crash.

The new beta 1.3.1 patch appears to fix this issue:
