These things should fix you up.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
4) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

Well they were meant to be tried in order, so #1 was the most likely. :)

Glad you are back in action!

Do you have all the windows updates? except for the language ones of course.

I would not worry about dammaging your computer, it is just your graphics card failing to reset. A simple reboot will solve any troubles.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu - Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select "Save All Information" button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says "DirectX components" then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Next time it happens try and copy and paste the error message here.
You can access it by pushing the button, the name escapes me at the moment but it should be self evident .

You you cannot C&P it then try and remember the jist of it, the number are not important for now, the module and stuff like that are good to know.

Okay a few things.
You said you had tried all three steps I out lined above and felt that renaming the AVI helped a bit. Have you tried all three steps at once?
Do you have a wire going to your video out of the video card, the one that is designed to go to a TV or a second monitor?
Has that option been disabled in your video card settings?
Have you tried a complete uninstall of the game then a fresh install?

Ya but I hate a mystery. :)

Your error message seams to be an interupt conflict, I assume a software one.
Did you install to the default Drive? the default folder?

Do you have anything unusual hooked up, a joystick or a Digital camera, Scanner ...

Sorry to be so long in responding. I was away for the weekend. No, I don't have anything unusual hooked up -- normal mouse and keyboard; laser printer; wireless router to broadband cable connection. I'm wondering about the 320GB Performance RAID 0 Hard Drive. As I understand it, the RAID 0 drives are actually dual drives that function as one. They're advertised to be great for game apps -- I'm no computer guy, but I wonder.

Well, sounds like this will not be solved unless I was actually sitting at the computer. You have your work around which is not ideal but works.

If it starts to bother you in the future let me know and we will work on it further.

I am 90% sure this is caused by something that is running in the background conflicting with CK.
shut down as much as you can rename the music folder as well and turn down the video acceleration one notch at a time.

Start-run-dxdiag then the video tab, the bottom of that screen.

In some versions it is called display (where all the info on your video card is displayed.).
You may not have full access to the acceleration slider there though. You May need to access it through the display properties. Hit the advanced button on the screen where you change the windows resolution.

Just try the different setting on that slider. I am eliminating things one by one. If you think I don't know what I am doing you are free to disregard my advice.

Given that fact, it is hard for me to imagine that I'm having an acceleration problem
How else do I interpret that statement. ;)

But that's okay, I am used to people telling me I don't know what I am doing right up until I solve their problems. Which is not to say yours can necessarily be solved remotely like this, but I am trying.

Well, a proper interpretation might start with completing the statement you quote: "-- but as I've said before, I'm no authority on computers." :)

I'll grant you that I could have worded the comment better, so I'll try:

"Given that I don't know a lot about computers, and that to my unsophisticated mind reducing 'acceleration' sounds like slowing down graphics, and given further that my problem does not arise while the program is actively running, but rather while it is paused, I am wondering if you could explain what reducing acceleration might do to help solve the problem?"

I hope that better states what I was intending to say.
That was my point if you trusted my advice you would try it, if you think I don't know what I am talking about you want an explaination first.

The simple answer is things do not always work the way you think they do.
Much like 90% of the people who think I don't know what I am doing because I tell them to rename the AVI folder, they say why should I do that I don't have any trouble with the intro videos. At least the ones that know the AVI folder is conected to the intro videos ask that. The answer is I am not trying to stop the intro videos playing that is rather a side effect. What I don't want is the Bink player to load, that is what plays the opening videos. The bink player is known to not unload itself from memory properly, and that can cause all kinds of problems when the game is running including strange results, and CTDs much later in the game including when exiting the game.
So something that looks like it could not possibly be involved in a shutdown error becuase it involves start up videos which play fine, can and often is the culprit.

Now I could explain all that to each person or I can simpley say,

1)Rename you AVI folder to AVI_back.

I choose to go with this method as even my standard advice has 4 points to it, the simplist one to explain I have just done, and if I had to explain why I suggest each thing done, it would take me several pages of type.

Regardless this is not the proper place to discuss my shortcomings :) , If you wish to discuss that aspect further feel free to PM me your comments.
