It turns out that the driver version for my logitech mouse was 9.77. I upgraded it to 9.79 as you suggested. Since doing so, I've started and played the game three times with no ctd's or blue screens (even when I exited). I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I appreciate your help, and I will get back if the problem surfaces again.

Great! I hope that solves it. To make a bold statement: that pretty much had to be it. And I'm usually not one to make bold statements, especially not even having been at your computer. But seeing as your brand new powerhouse system has no other problems at all...

Logitech seems to be pretty happy with 9.79, seeing as it's been around for ages now. They have nice products, but their drivers...? I once made the mistake of installing version 8 on XP (might have been an earlier version or win2k). It said it wasn't compatible but there wasn't a newer version yet and I figured "how bad can it be"? Poof, gone system. This was in an experimental environment though, not that I go around screwing up regular systems :D . Otherwise, like I said, I've had my problems with their drivers too.

Anyway, if you get a CTD in the future, remember that it might be other things too. I've read some people having trouble with autosave or having the speed to high, but I don't know if those are still issues. As a rule, I always save manually in January of every year (every month in HOI) in every Paradox product. It's not necessarily necessary (?) but it saves a lot of frustration just in case. Remember to clean them out once in a while though, or they'll fill your disk (even yours ;) ). And as I wrote above, I've had problems with having to many courtiers. I was playing happily along without (hardly?) any CTD's until I got to 1300something and suddenly it happened every couple of months. In an act of desperation I used to "die" cheat on the weeds in my court and I was fine until 1453.

OK, I'll shut up now.

Well, I've now played and exited the game 4 straight times with no blue screens -- a new record. I can live with the occasional ctd, it's the blue screens that were getting to me.

I've found that CK ctd's tend to wipe out saved games, meaning that the game I was playing at the time of the ctd will not re-load. It's easy to see why when I open the saved games directory, the size of the crashed save usually shows to be something like 60 KB. Like you, I save regularly. Actually, I use the auto-save plus two manual saves, which is tedious, but if you've ever lost 3 hours of gameplay to a ctd, you can live with tedium. I don't use the default save game names. If I'm playing Denmark, for example, I'll save once as Denmark1, and then again as Denmark2 -- not that my save game patterns are of interest to anyone else. :)

Thanks, again.

I thought I was the only one

I experienced the exact same problem that you are experiencing. It got to the point that till this day, I cannot play CK on my computer. I'm using a custom built rig with a AMD Athlon 3200+ CPU, 1GB of 400 DDR RAM, a Raptor SATA 10000, Chaintech GeForce FX 5500 video card, Windows XP Pro, w SP2. The problem started, I believe, after I upgraded my video card from an old ATI Radeon 9200 SE card to my GeForce. I believe that it might be a software conflict with the hardware, but I doubt it, as it (CK) is the only program that causes this problem. It (the problem) used to occur after I would finish playing, causing my PC to reboot, but then it got to the point where I couldn't even load the game without the computer rebooting. I have been looking everywhere for a solution, maybe a patch, but until today, I had not read anything similar. I hope a solution to this can be found.
