CK & Victoria don't work

CK & Victoria: can't start any scenario

Both games have the same problem:

I can pick any scenario and when I press the Start-Button
the screen goes blank for a few seconds (the game's trying to load
something) and then I'm back to the Windows-Desktop!

Both Games are distributed in Germany by Koch-Media I think.
Version Victoria: 1.00b
Version Crusader Kings: 1.02b (tried patch 1.03 - same result)

My Computer:

Athlon 64 3000+
512 MB RAM
Windows XP Home (Version 2002) SP1
38 GB free on HDD
Hercules 3D Prophet 9800XT 256 MB Driver: CATALYST 04.1
Hercules Gamesurroud Fortissimo III 7.1 Driver: 5.12.1.4101
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1802
DirectX 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902)

Please help me - I can't play these great games!!!

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Hi,

I have had exatly the same problem with paradox games (EuropaUniversalis II, Victoria) and my ATI 9800XT.
Just disable the "VPU Recover" feature in the ATI driver settings, this will stop the game to crash to desktop.

renaming avi folder worked

disabling VPU-Recover didn't work -
but renaming the avi folder did!
