Firstly I hope that this is the appropriate forum for a post like this, and apologies if such a picture heavy thread is against the rules, but please move it elsewhere (or amend/delete/whatever) if not!

I usually start my Crusader Kings games as the ruler of the province of Lancaster in England / Northumbria (depending on start date) as I was myself born in the same area, and playing CK2 has given me more interest in the real history of the region. So without further ado, here are some of the holdings from the CK2 Lancaster province, in real life as they are today! -

Main holding - Lancaster Castle:

The temple holding hasn't survived so well (Furness Abbey):

The city holding of Preston doesn't have any parts that have survived since the Middle Ages, but some parts still look a little old:

For additional holdings there are Clitheroe Castle:

Sawley Abbey:

The oldest building in Salford (now part of Manchester of course) is Ordsall Hall which was built in the 13th century, though the oldest parts of the building today have only been dated to the 15th century:

Gisburn has the church of St Mary the Virgin, which was originally built in the 12th century, although the building today is one that was rebuilt some time around the 15th or 16th century:

And finally I found a cool map of the area dated a little after the CK2 period (from 1610):

So as a history geek I found the exploration into some local history based on the CK2 holdings very interesting - hopefully others can do the same?

Nice pictures you have!

Raseborg Castle ruins today and an artist's illustration of the castle (located in Karjaa province in CK2)

In Finland we have for example these Raseborg Castle ruins. The claim is this castle is from the late 14th century but no confirmed info. Presumably Albert of Riga and Livonian Brothers of Sword founded Raseborg during Livonian Crusade. Due the connections to the Bishopric of Ratzeburg in Northern Germany this castle was named as Raseborg. Raseborg's main purpose was to protect Swedish interests in Southern Finland and compete against Hanseatic city Tallinn.

Originally built on a small island Raseborg was abandoned due the uplift of nearby terrain and the collapse of castle's beer cellar and it went into rack and ruin. Nowdays the ruins are surrounded by dry terrain with eutrophic Raseborg River near. The castle has been restored as a tourist attraction.

To be fair, the collapse of the cellar indicates possible serious issues with the castles foundations, so abandoning the castle may have made sense for a more fundamental reason than lack of beer (as serious as this defect may be...)

There are a few but reasonable reasons why this Raseborg Castle was abandoned. The castle was built during restless time period and it was under continuous struggle of the control due its strategic location.

The renaissance years of the Raseborg Castle was between 1450s-1460s while the King of Sweden and his court inhabited the castle. During the Danish Siege in the early 16th century the castle fell under Christian II of Denmark. Raseborg was badly damaged in this siege. Gustav Vasa of Sweden regained the control of the castle shortly but it was in disorder due the Danish occupation. The Swedish abandoned the Raseborg Castle soon after regaining it but it was repopulated again in a few years. During this repopulation attemps were made to repair and renovate the Raseborg Castle, but the final collapse of the beer cellar during the restoration was decisive.

Why the beer cellar collapsed - there is not enough evidence discovered, but presumably the collapse was due the continuous fighting, the Danish Siege and the Danish occupation and the damage which were due those events. Might be a native construction defects also. The uplift of the nearby terrain also depressed Raseborg's status as a major stronghold, it wasn't anymore accessible by the sea and ships. During Raseborg's depression also the current capital of Finland, Helsinki was founded reducing interest on Raseborg. Also Åbo in the west and Vyborg in the east were more capable of competing the trade against the Hansa and Reval.
