Firstly I hope that this is the appropriate forum for a post like this, and apologies if such a picture heavy thread is against the rules, but please move it elsewhere (or amend/delete/whatever) if not!
I usually start my Crusader Kings games as the ruler of the province of Lancaster in England / Northumbria (depending on start date) as I was myself born in the same area, and playing CK2 has given me more interest in the real history of the region. So without further ado, here are some of the holdings from the CK2 Lancaster province, in real life as they are today! -
Main holding - Lancaster Castle:
The temple holding hasn't survived so well (Furness Abbey):
The city holding of Preston doesn't have any parts that have survived since the Middle Ages, but some parts still look a little old:
For additional holdings there are Clitheroe Castle:
Sawley Abbey:
The oldest building in Salford (now part of Manchester of course) is Ordsall Hall which was built in the 13th century, though the oldest parts of the building today have only been dated to the 15th century:
Gisburn has the church of St Mary the Virgin, which was originally built in the 12th century, although the building today is one that was rebuilt some time around the 15th or 16th century:
And finally I found a cool map of the area dated a little after the CK2 period (from 1610):
So as a history geek I found the exploration into some local history based on the CK2 holdings very interesting - hopefully others can do the same?
