Okay. 40 hours into this game. Played about 2 hours today and just came back to the game. I open it, and crashes on loading screen when it says "initializing" on top left corner of the loading screen. Very odd. The game worked perfectly.
I turned off antivirus, windows defender firewall windowed mode turned off steam overlay PC reboot reinstall game etc. Nothing works. Validate game file integrity. Still nothing. Tried sending crash report - that doesn't work either. Crash reporter says "Upload failed for an unknown reason. Please try again."
I don't use AVAST. I use Malwarebytes premium.

Absolutely nothing has changed from between the time when I played it last, and when I attempted to play again. Thus not even system restore point was created.

ok i opend it fro the real game exe in steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings III\binaries and it worked for what ever reasion
Does this happen if you try to start a new game rather than loading an existing save
are you laying on the pc game pass?
Steam.pressing play OR resume from launcher, and the game starts, then crahses at loading screen
I will try that and let you guys know.
Edit: Update. Launching game from exe file works. Starting game from launcher still crashes. Glad it's not my PC's issue.

No. Just launching from the launcher causes this problem, even if Steam was started as admin. What's more strange is that launching the game from .exe file directly works, but all my saves are gone aside from autosaves. I think that has to do with save files going to steam user data folder instead of documents folder (where autosaves go). Moving my main saves to documents folder, I was able to load them.

Launching directly from the exe bypasses steam cloud saves which is why your previous saves don’t show up
can you try disabling steam cloud in the steam properties for CK3. That would at least make your save games consistent no matter how you load the game

Got the same problem. Tried the tips here and other places, but still no go for me.
TBH i'm just frustrated. I'm using Xbox Game Pass, i was able to play since realese and since today suddenly game just won't lunch after clicking PLAY in luncher. Luncher is just shutting down and that's it. I was tryiung running as administrator, disabling Kaspersky Antyvirus, disabling both Kaspersky and Windows Defender, reinstalled game 3 times, adding both luncher and ck3.exe to whitelist and nothing seems to work.

Strange yesterday it had been working fine. Now even running directly from the exe it crashes. I started it made a new game as matilda and my laptop even i have fullscreen suddenly the game gives me a pause message even i did nothing, i just observe then after a few ingame months when i try to do stuff suddenly i get the crash back on the screen. Yeah have a laptop and similar reason why it might not work for the others strangely until yesterday it had been running well. Had at first some issues then read some stuff on the board which helped me fix it,
But this suddenly pause message without any intervention by me in single player is reall new have never seen something in any game before. No clue happened since the new update.

I hope they are working on a fix soon. I would like steam and paradox to be connected just in case i decide to go for achievements.
Yeah i have an acer laptop, looks like this case to fix it like that way but like the poster i can not update to an too old driver :/ - I fear just waiting for a new update, even i have no clue why yesterday it had been running and today it is a mess (again) ;(

I know this was posted but for everyone that has this Issue just disable the Randsom Protect form either Window Defender or AVG Antivirus. After that everything works its so RANDOM!
I am also having this issue. I was able to play fine since last week, but tried to run it today and it crashes at "Initializing game" whether I run from the launcher, the .exe, resuming a save game or just hitting Play form the launcher. What the heck?
Did you look into the AV stuff mentioned above?
DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.
Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/CK3/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log
Hey guys, have the same problem. Seems to be linked to the steam cloud saves.
If i disable the Steam Cloud the game starts without a problem. Sadly cant play my ironmansave without it turned on.
