I engage in combat with the Islamic provinces as Castille, and have a warscore of 167, while occupying 5 provinces in NW Spain. I ask for 1 province of a score of 26 and got about 25 no answers. What gives? Is there some kind of score dynamic in this game that I just don't get? I mean, does the score have to be way higher versus what you want to get? Also, I am not used to scores over 100...

The warscore in CK isn't really a "percent." This means scores over 100 are very common, because a warscore of 100 doesn't actually have any absolute significance.

As for why your peace proposal is getting shot down—maybe they still think they can win. If you occupy all of the enemy's demesne provinces, they will have to accept peace, but if not, they may well think they still have a shot at it. Especially in the Iberian peninsula. That place is nuts.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon with a more mechanically-enlightening response, but I reckon that's the gist of it.

I do know that the AI will also factor in standing armies so if they have a large-ish army chilling around in some random province that you haven't taken, then the AI still may think it has a chance, which is why you might be getting that many declined notices. Hopefully Veld or jord will pop in for a more enlightened answer.

Which is weird/funny, because usually the "vassalize them" option is worth 100 points :D

As Hawkeye said, the AI seems to act like EU3, though even more hardcore - if they have a massive army left somewhere, they might not even accept white peace, even if you have 4 of their 5 demesne provinces.

something I've noticed with Mongol squashing, is if they are being difficult about peace, you really need all their provinces, its a bit of a race to siege their last province before they snag another of yours, but you can usually manage it in the end.

I think it is connected to them still having a single huge army even though you've captured most of their realm.

Bah, what a pain. I just can't keep paying 100 gold a month with my armies. I go broke after a year or so.

If you fight defensively (in your own territory) and have roads and extended roads then you can set army-maintenance to zero, since you don't lose troop from attrition then.

Or if the AI is just sending individual regiments/small armies, disband your troops and only raise them when the enemy is close by.

Or only use the troops of your vassals, you don't pay for their upkeep.
