I just want a Cold War game. PDX doesn't want to deal with modern (2001-now) geopolitics? That's fine with me: just give me old geopolitics (1946-1991) and I'll be happy.

Well over 10 years ago Paradox were working on a cold-war game called East vs West. It was developed by an external studio using HoI3's engine. Eventually, it got cancelled due technical reasons, after it missed its release date. So who knows, maybe Paradox will try again one day. Hopefully this time lettings PDS take care of it. Maybe they'll be ambitious ;)

By the way, the soundtrack to that game is awesome. Very atmospheric. You can find it on YouTube.

I don't think modern politics make a great theme for a GSG.
I would like instead to see HOI's timeline extended into the early 60s and get some Cold War mechanics there (that being said, that's a hope I have for HOI5, I think it's too late in HOI4's dev cycle to do something like this).

Sorry, Aresenal of Democracy and Darkest Hour were using the Europa engine.

According to Wikipedia, this game was supposed to use the Clausewitz engine.
it was using the CLausewitz engine, but sadly, it was using Semper Fi as the base and not TFH.

A geopolitical Cold War game can be done with a very narrative approach combined with a strategic layer. Hidden Agenda, Crisis in the Kreml or Suzerain have done it well. King of Dragon Pass/Six Ages have perhaps perfected such game mechanics, although in a fantasy setting.

In any case, the event scripting of especially Crusader Kings would fit well with such mechanics.
