Do they become even remotely usefull? They provide next to no income or troops and are constantly in danger of being sieged by a horde which destroyes them. It kind of weakens the dothraki but that is all. Do they get some upgrade events? I could upgrade them myself but I want to colonize even more land and I don't want to blow to much money on this. Time is also a big factor.

If you don't want to dedicate the time and money to improving your colony, why would you expect big dividends from them?

But that wasn't redomer's question. He asked if it was worth the money. He indicated that there are other, better investment opportunity around, not just those within Dothraki Sea, and wanted a comparison between a normal colony and a Dothraki one. Plus, he is also restrained by time so there is a chance that he'll just dump a lot of money as investment in a colony with little to no return in profits.

I am interested to know if there will be something like an event to make it worth my while. Normal colonies have a fortress and cost only 500 more and seem to have the same events fireing.

Edit: I did spent 2 Generations colonizing only to get only about 300 guys even completly destroyed cities like the sorrows have more troops after about the same time. That sounds just aweful. The AI is unable to upgrade castles so I would have to wait one or more generations to upgrade a castle. If that is WAD that should be redesigned.

But vibrant cities do not just spring up from empty fields of grass. At least ruins may have half-usable infrastructure and materials for rebuilding, and possibly represent good strategic locations in the past (Chroyane/The Sorrows is on the Rhoyne and might be reasonably reestablished as a trade hub of sorts). Most of the Dothraki Sea are just, well, endless grasslands, whatever there was of civilization was completely wiped out by the horse lords. So naturally it should be much harder to build things up again from scratch.

There are Events regarding infrastructure and from my own experience I know that sometimes it is easier to just build something from scratch than rebuilding.
Remember that ruins start with cities and temples. I wouln't mind however to get an event to upgrade some more. Like paying 300 for a fort and later a 1000 to upgrade some more. The instand doom when they are sieged is a bit annoying and a very big danger in the dothraki sea.

colonies in the sea are annoying... but not for income and shit thats solved with time. The annoying thing is if your Emperor of New Valyaria there are nearly 30 dothraki provinces needing colonization lol no way in hell that will ever happen... So go dragonlord on the Dothraki who own the land? No they splinter up and provinces are lost due to their nomadic nature...
