I'm having some problems setting up colonies and trading posts. Many times I have sent colonists to areas with 80%+ success rates only to find them failing over and over again. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? I've tried to boost the rates by placing explorers in the area or getting rid of any hostile natives but it does not seem to make any difference. I'm running the German version with the latest patch (1.05b). Cheers.

Keep trying, I get runs of failures sometimes. I even had 3 failures in a row when trying to colonize curraco at 95%. Statistically it is possible for every single colonization to fail. The % is the chance/possibilty for each independant colonist to suceed.
It does not say that you are guaranteed that 95 colonists will suceed and 5 will fail.

Although I did read somewhere that the chance of success is increased by the number of previous attempts. I'm not sure if this was meant to include failures, but it is obvisous that the % increases for each lvl of colony you have already established.
Having adjacent existing colonies also increases the chance....

Where is the percentage chance of success listed?

In the bottom of the game menu, to the left, you can click on the settler symbol (just right of the trade button). Now click on the province you wish to colonise. You will see both the chance of success for a trader and a settler as well as native size, aggression levels, etcetera.

Dubcat,

I don't think that is the % chance of success, but is instead the suitability. The higher the suitability, the greater the likelihood of success.

I am basing this on the number of failures I get on 80%+ suitable colonies/TPs. It seems to be more like a 60% success rate for 80% suitability.

Colonists and Tading Posts

I too have experienced alot of frustration with setting up colonists and trading posts. The only thing I know of to better the odds is to set up a trading post first, although many times the suitability rating suggests you should just go for a colony right away.

Having other colonies nearby is supposed to help, but I haven't seen this to be true. While playing Eire I had such a hard time successfully sending colonists to Lennister that I gave up, and let it grow into a city. Mind you, this province was right next to my capital.

In short, the only solution seems to be stubborn, dogged determination. Accept that you will throw away legions of doomed colonists and 100's of duckats before you hit the jackpot. Just think of it as playing the slots in Atlantic City.

He who defends everything, defends nothing.

A conquistador always helps too. TP first is also better since it costs a lot less, takes less time and gives +5% to later colony attempts.
