Colonization chances?

I'm playing France at the moment and I'm having the worst luck trying to establish colonies or trading posts. I'd estimate my success rate at about 1 time in 4. Either "suitability" has nothing to do with your chances of a successful attempt or I've been having the worst run of luck imaginable, since I'm only attempting to colonize or TP places with a suitability of 80% or better.

I never had this problem when playing England. Is this supposed to happen with France or has Lady Luck just decided to sit at someone else's table for a while?

There does seem to be some level of historical validity, i.e, your chances are better colonizing in areas where France historically colonized. Try stationing some troops in the potential colony area. Even better is a conquistador. That will increase the chances of successful colony building

Nevermind. As soon as I went back to the game after starting this thread I began getting much more reasonable results. Personally, I'm convinced the RNG got nervous that I'd ratted on it and started behaving itself .

Sometimes it seems to work in streaks to me. But it always tends to even out in the end.

My record: 75% chance and 12 fails in a row... a bit annoying if you only get 1 per year, but that's life...
