1071-emperor Romanus discovers the plot against him-his army successfully withdraws to camp on the first day of Manzikert. The second day is another in Romanus' string of victories. The empire is held, although his successors do lose some ground (Adana and Sivas, in the game.) The collapse of the Seljuk Turks helps bring the Ottomans to the fore-Osman becomes a vassal of the Byzantines-for over a century the Byzantines use the Ottomans to shield their frontier, pushing the Ottomans to expand toward the Caspian in the direction of ancient Armenia/Media. These relations have collapsed by 1492-in fact, most recently, the Ottomans have conquered Trebizond from the Byzantines (let's say in 1461.) As a military society, they have huge armies for their size.

As for the Crusades, Romanus' successor attempts to neutralise the Normans ruling Sicily, whose attacks are distracting him from the collapsing but stil worrying Seljuks, by hiring a large number of them, and other Europeans, as mercenaries. This triggers the call for crusade by the Pope. These occur roughly in the historical sequence, although Byzantine assistance ("let's get them out of there") allows more of them to reach the Holy Land (the Fourth Crusade takes and sacks Constantinople, but the Latins are driven out within a year.) The Crusaders are eventually driven out-only Byzantine support allows the combined order of the Hospitallers and the Templars (they merged) to hold Lebanon (hence the CoT-Templar influence.)

Despite this, relations between western and eastern Christendom are decidedly frosty-more so than in our timeline.

That's a rough explanation rattled out, BiB, off the back of my hand......almost!:) ;)

As Polish pressure increased on the Teutonic order, the Grand Masters appealed to Germany for help-the Electors of Brandenburg, with many relatives in the Knights, did what they could (more than in our time-line.) This interference prompted the Poles to become more aggressive, with the occupation of the Teutonic lands as a goal-this led to intervention by both Denmark and the Habsburgs, as well as Novgorod and Muscovy, cooperating for one of the few times ever. A compromise peace deeded eastern Prussia to the Hohenzollerns (it's secularised earlier) with a nominal Polish sovereignty (ignored), while the Poles got the wealthy western section, Danzig. The remaining Teutonic territories were formally merged with those of the "brothers of the sword", creating the Teutonic territory of 1492-the Poles felt losing parts of Samogita was a small price to pay when faced with the hostility of almost all surrounding states. The Lithuanians may have felt otherwise. The Hohenzollern electors gained a reputation for diplomatic skill that would serve them in good stead in the future in Germany. They also gained an implacable foe (this explains why Poland's first war is almost always against the Prussia-Teutonic Alliance.)

Not as good an explanation as my first, I'm afraid BiB-by the way, any chance of seeing your Flandres monarch/leader files?;)

I'm considering moving Poland's capital to Cracow and creating a vassalised Ukraine at the start-the Poles are just too strong (I know it didn't work for Dralizaar, but still!):D

Anyway, my leader/monarch files require just 3 IDs :D

I see-ever the minimalist BiB!

(I'd set Prussia as a playable nation, by the way-I like that option!:D You have to think on your feet on these forums!:D)

Any more immediate questions-just got the "Shogun" expansion pack, so don't know how fast I'll be continuing with this mod!:)

That happens with non independent nations :D A council for monarch and the odd leader.

Why not split Spain too ?

I'd get rid of the free Netherlands at the start and let them revolt and then get their COT anyway. IF they don't exist, it won't pop up too soon. Shame France can't get a COT pop up in Paris if they grow big.

For Spain, the provinces are too horribly distorted for me even to consider it.

As for the Netherlands, who do you think should have them?

Do you want the changes I've made? I'd have to send you at least revolt csv. as well, and some changes to the "text" file in config.

Oh, as for playing, say Novgorod-configure a new IGC set of nations as required, then change the "use scenario" document line in the EUG. file-it seems to work for the hands-off games I'm running. Actually that's pretty obvious, I guess it's what you've been doing when doing your own mods.:D

Oh, and I'me having some trouble with moving Holland-if it's not just my machine, you'll see,

Going to split this into a separate thread, scenario forum perhaps?:D :D

Provinces aren't optimal but I quite enjoyed a divided Spain. Map of Europe looks cool with all those split nations ;)

Friesland and Gelre :D I'd give them to Burgundy. Obviously that's far from correct (but u can twist that too, I bet ;) ) but it'd make Holland very real.

Xure, send away :D

Been playing Shogun today, but the files'll be on there way to you in a minute.:)

Never got into Shogun. It is great in the part of the game I ain't really interested in and quite crap in the area that does interest me. Quite the EU adept, really :D

Warming up to some kind of Angevin action. Though I'll be playing as France obviously :D

Not Flandres?:D

Oh well, bye, bye England.

Before you ask why the Dutch fleet is in an English province, it was invisible when I tried putting it in a Dutch one!

Must get onto McGuinn to see if he can do me a couple of shields-although I guess you might be better placed to tell me the right heraldic symbols (Brabant and Luxembourg.)

Don't worry, u know I believe in co-existation so I only want the French provinces back :D

Jeremy has one for Luxembourg and the Brabant one looks quite like the one for the Palatinal like Flanders resembles Saxony.

I wanna try France as for once a major could be at least challenging for at least some time. Same reason why I play with Castille and so on.

Ur Brabant is very strangely located :D Like on the spot of Gelre and Friesland ;)

Anyhoe, what Burgundy are u portraying? It's hardly the Burgundy the Mighty option that exists in the IGC.

For Brabant-blame Zeeland! I did look at a proper map before picking the porvince of, ahem, Holland.

Now, Burgundy. Burgundy began its northern expansion with an inheritance by marriage of Flandres (I believe, BiB?) but with your "request" of an independent Flandres (which I quite liked, by the way) history has to change.

So a Flandres revolt, plus hostility with France, abetted by a strong England, led to a desire to recreate the "old" Burgundy (Kingdom of Arles) expansion to the north and east being stymied by France and the Empire.

Dauphine was actually owned by a previous, post Arles, Burgundian house up until about 1282. I might want to add Burgundian CBs on Languedoc's provinces-and Languedoc (being based in this timeline on the counts of Toulouse) is a much better shape now!

I was looking for either Flanders or Burgundy ;) Btw the Franche-Comté also is part of the Flemish inheritance ;)

If u want a BRabant u should use Hainaut for it. Holland and Friesen in the game are Gelre and Friesland who will both be in EUII.

Yes, but Franche-Comte had been part of an earlier Burgundy-I also believe it had been a fairly recent addition to the Flandres "inheritance", as it were.

Okay then, I'll have to alter Brabant to, hmmm, Guelders (I think that's the English version) then. Easy enough-I was going to have to invent monarch names anyway!:) Running out of tags I'm willing to alter!

Still, i don't know when this will happen-Poseidon just arrived today (Zeus expansion pack.);) :D
