I wonder if we would have things like that... for example, the genoese had commercial treaties with the byzantines giving them a nice portion of the trade in the Black Sea. Venetians had trading outposts everywhere in the med, and also wars happened between them.

How could we handle those things in CK? Could we acquire priviledges as result of a war, or the opposite, priviledges leading into wars? Embargoes? Monopoly for a certain province/good?

I know that money isn't the main focus of the game, but it would be interesting if we could implement things like these.

EDIT: HEY! This is my 1000th post! Yes!:D :D

Well, free cities aren't playable (nooo:D ), and they were fundamental for the whole crusading bit! Their transports of pilgrims ensured more soldiers for Jerusalem; their trade interests helped to keep alive the idea of crusades...maybe through events....:(

Hm, from a player perspective conquering trading priviledges wouldn't be an issue, since you won't be able to play the Merchant Republics anyway.

But OTOH, having to grant these priviledges to a Merchant Republic would be a nice addition.
Instead of conquering your (feudal) lands, these MRs would "only" extract trading rights and priviledges from you, therefore minimizing your trade tolls, therefore weakening you financially...

That's a good idea. Or for example you can grant trading priviledges to a MR as payment/interest for a loan. Kings always needed money...

Except for no more loans?:D

money only corrupts people

and it is a city of sin, BURN, BURN, BURN!

and the pope will probably give you a medal, or at least a honorary badge, or something...

Even then, you'll still need their ships to ferry your troops over to conquer Consta... I mean, the Holy Land.;)

That seems to have been pretty common. Denmark, I know, was just about destroyed as an indpendent kingdom in the mid-1300s due to so many counties having been given away to german princes as security and 'interest'. Some rotten german prince got my homeland of Scania (Skåne) and was granted whatever taxes he could squeeze out of the population as interest on the loan. Formally, the danish king was still the owner of the county. In actuality, it was controlled by german taxcollectors and their mercenaries. Following a violent revolt, the swedish king bought the county from the german prince by paying the loan.

I wonder what the consequences would be for invading and annexing a free-city in the game...?

It's always nice and useful to sack a rich Imperial capital once in a while, also. ;)
