Hi Eugen!

I had a long discussion yesterday with one of my friends, both of us played Wargame RD along time and where in this game from the beginning. We discussed the problems, all the dickhead haters and the problem the game faces. My friend told me that he loved the game but that he hade this irritation towards you as game developers and he didnt really now why. We tried to understand why all this hating is comming from and why community is so toxic.
The main thesis was:

The crowd around Wargame and SD are that kind of gamers how really love there niche and have alot of ideas of the theaters and realism and "how the game really should be". In there eyes you create almost the perfect game but becuase of X the game isnt what they thinkt it should be. Therefore they get upset. They complain becuase they realtiy as an argument. That dont happen in Starcraft becuase there is nothing to compare there units or setting with. But the same thing happens in Dawn of War becuase people love there Warhammer. So when the players feels upset about problems with balance, or tanks not working as they "should" they feel upset because they love the game they have an idea of what the game could be. The gamers feel that they dont know what your are planning to do and there fore can complain because all the problems feels permanent.

I know that you have said that you dont give out a roadmaps but i cant really understand why, idont think that a roadmap would take away all the problems but it would help as an argument against all the defatists. Can you let us know a little about how you persive community relations and what you think would be a good way to build up a better relationship?

Thanks for a great game!

I think that you're mostly right. Taken me as an example - yesterday I got really, really upset about the new patch.
This is simply because it's just too much uncertainty in what developers are doing. I just don't trust them or their decisions at all.
First they lost my statistics, then my friends and now they make a weird (in my opinion) patch and do not explain
why these changes were needed and what are plans for the future. It happens all the time - we know nothing.
There are a lot of games and companies that are doing a fantastic job when it comes to community management.
Eugen unfortunately is years behind.

But at same time you really love the game, or the idea of the game? Or do i get you wrong?

Exactly! That's the point. I love this game, that only doubled my hate :)
I also don't understand why they stopped making livestreams and other content that could get them closer to the community.

Hey there, thanks for your messages. We're gonna give you a lot of info very soon. Announcements are coming.

@Stedke, the server issues we encountered were definitely not normal and shoudn't have happened. That was the first time since we launched Wargame: European Escalation in 2012 that we experienced such a breakdown. We're sorry for the inconvenience, you can read our complete statement there. Concerning livestreams, we loved to do it, but we are a very small team, and we had to focus on upcoming developments. I'm not saying that it's not coming back, though. The last two updates were developed with the help of selected members of the community, and we'll continue this process in the future. As the update development depends on stats and on the community's feedback, we can't release a patch and directly announce what's coming next straightaway.

Nevertheless, keep an eye on the forums.

I think a lot of us would agree with both of you. I really enjoyed Wargame and enjoy SD.

Am I confused by some of the decisions between games (removing some features, adding others, weird UI things)? Yes, I am.

I see so much potential with SD. Imagine if it had a strategic map where you could do Grand Campaigns (sort of like Close Combat 5) with multiple people fighting the campaign? Or even, just two players or the like. Sure, that's a pretty big idea, but there's so much great potential with this engine. It's awesome for RTS.

Instead, we get brief responses, or lately, posts that are defensive. Eugen, you don't need to stoop to a troll's level to respond. (Thinking of the map editor thread) Yes, it sucks having to answer the same question a lot (easy solution...make a sticky thread explaining or something) but all those interactions matter. You can see so many really care about the game and just want to know more. They want to know their time and energy towards the game is being understood and taken in good faith to bring us more content and the like.

I think the sometimes lack of clear communications for what the future holds dissuades people. Why invest in this game if nothing more is coming? We know there is an announcement but is it more divisions? new theater? etc.

We're clearly supporters of you, we just want to know a bit of what's ahead. We don't need the internal memos, but more than "don't worry...stuff is coming." Goes a long way.

Thanks for making great RTS games!

Thanks for providing more info and explanation. This helps.

Thank you very much for that post! That is encouraging. It's also great to read that you didn't drop livestreams once and for all. I'll be waiting patiently for other updates :)

@EUG_PapaYankee

Copying my post from the patch thread which was full of very hostile and rude comments from players.

Why do you guys not have Paradox's mods enforce the same very lax rules that exist in every other forum on this site?

I don't agree with many of the decisions your team has made with balance, but I also think the level of disrespect and hostility in here is deeply unhelpful for all sides of the discussion and especially unlikely to bring about the sort of developer engagement that the community has been asking for since day one. We don't need toxic shit flinging by people who are cranky that this or that change wasn't made. Even if I agree with their opinion, the methods used to express it are wildly inappropriate.

Please do your community a favor and have some ground rules for participation in this portion of it. Disagreement is fine, poor behavior really shouldn't be.
